CORNISH MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 2 Thursday-- At St Joseph's parsonage, Hancock last night James C. BARNES of Houghton wed Miss Tracy COOK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton COOK, of West Houghton. DEATH 1889 Nov 2 Thursday-Mr. Celesta BERNIER died at his home in Houghton yesterday. 3 weeks ago he married a lady from Chassell, which is left to mourn him. He was an old resident of Houghton. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1899 Nov 3 Friday- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY Richard H. JENKINS of Atlantic Mine location and Matilda BILGEN of Atlantic mine location DEATH 1899 Nov 4 Saturday-- August KANGAS, a Finnish miner, died in a mine accident in No 2 shaft at the Arcadian mine yesterday afternoon. He was married about 3 months ago. MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 6 Monday-- At St Cecelia's church, Lake Linden Saturday morning; Richard H. JENKINS of Atlantic mine location and Miss Matilda Bilgen of Tamarack city. DEATH 1899 Nov 6 Monday-- August HAKANEN was found on the steps of St Joseph Hospital, Hancock all battered and bruised. He said that two unknown men beat him up and robbed him. He died in the hospital Saturday night in the hospital. He was 56 years old and was Finnish. Being a stranger without friends, he was buried at the expense of the county in the old Hancock cemetery. 1899 Nov 7 Tuesday- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY Carl G. ERICKSON and Evita OPLAND, both of Calumet DEATH 1899 Nov 7 Tuesday-- Edwin Edward LANGDON, aged 57 years, died yesterday morning at his home in West Houghton of consumption after an illness of 18 months duration. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1842 and came to America in 1857 and locating in the copper country because of the mining industry. For several years he worked in the mines but the last 22 years he was a janitor of the Houghton high school. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Priscilla LANGDON, and two sons --F. T. LANGDON and Wm LANGDON to mourn his death. On Wednesday he will be buried at the Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGES 1899 Nov 8 Wednesday-- Victor TERVO of Calumet wed Miss Kristina WAISANEN of Hancock. Services were held at the home of Peter WAISANEN, and the Finnish Lutheran church choir of, Hancock. , of which the bride was a member sang. They will live in Calumet. 1899 Nov 8 Wednesday--At the Hancock Finnish Lutheran church on Monday evening, Alfred SLIFEN wed Miss Annie STROLBERG. The groom is employed at the Finnish printing office and they will live in Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1899 Nov 8 Wednesday-- Victor MATSON and wife left Sunday night en route to Helsingfors, Finland. He has fallen heir to a fortune left him by his father. He has sworn off of drink and has given the money to his wife to keep for them so he won't be tempted to spend it on riotous living. NEWS ITEM 1899 Nov 8 Wednesday-- Aubrey PHILLIPS of Calumet left on the late train Sunday night en route to his home town in CORNWALL, ENGLAND He will spend 3 months visiting relatives. 1899 Nov 9 Thursday-MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY Wm J. SIGKER and Mary GAFFNEY, both of Calumet Math MAJERLE and Johanna PEZDIRE, both of Tamarack DEATH 1899 Nov 10 Friday-- Jacob HOLOPA, a Finnish miner, about 65 years old, worked for the Kearsarge Mining company in the mine and after many years he retired about a year ago to rest the rest of his life. He found he could not do nothing all day so he was taken back to work in the mine. On his first day back, Wednesday, he was hit by a skip and died in the Tamarack hospital yesterday. Capt. Wm SKEWIS gave testimony at the inquest. CORNISH CAPT SKEWIS NEWS ITEM 1899 Nov 11 Saturday-- Victor BURMAN, who conducted a Finnish newspaper in Hancock for several years and sold out to people in Calumet, has been offered and accepted another position on a paper in his native country, Finland. He will leave with his family for Finland the latter part of this month. DEATHS 1899 Nov 11 Saturday--Jacob LAIKIA, a Finnish miner, was killed in a mine accident at the Kearsarge mine, while working at No 2 shaft of the mine yesterday. He left a wife and family to mourn him. 1899 Nov 11 Saturday-- Morris CONDON, one of the oldest residents of the Osceola mine location, died yesterday in his 73rd year at home. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons and 1 daughter-- John; Michael and Andrew; also Mrs. John ROEHM. Harry Ernest SMITH wed Miss Blanche Doolittle HUBBELL, daughter of Judge Jay A. HUBBELL of Houghton. DEATH 1899 Nov 15 Wednesday-- Henry STEVENS, died Tuesday night at his boarding house on the Kearsarge Mine location. He died of spinal meningitis only after a week of being ill. He was 24 years old and had been at Kearsarge mine only 4 months after coming from the Transvall, South Africa. They are both from Franklin location working that mine for several years. MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 17 Friday --Andrew JACKSON wed Miss Harriet SAAMS at the Mohawk mine location on Wednesday. The groom is the master mechanic at the Mohawk Mine. DEATH 1899 Nov 18 Saturday-- John CHOPP., a miner at the Phoenix Mine, fell to his death on Thursday afternoon. He was 24 years old and has a brother, Joe, working for Hosking and Company of Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 19 Sunday-- Richard POELL of Grover wed Miss Martha FRANKS. They will live at Grover. DEATH 1889 Nov 20 Monday-Mrs. Evelyn ALLEN, wife of James ALLEN, died at her home in Hancock. She was born in Hazel Green, Wisconsin about 44 years ago. She was the daughter of Matthew MORALEE and had been married about 26 years. She is survived by her husband, a son and 3 daughters, Matthew, Miss Nellie and Mrs. BUSCH are the children who will attend the funeral. She was buried at Schoolcraft cemetery. CORNISH? MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 22 Wednesday-- Joseph LAMIRANDE wed Miss Agnes DESLARGIAS at St Cecelia's church Lake Linden yesterday. Napoleon DESLARGIAS, brother of the bride was best man and the bridesmaid was Miss Mollie LAMIRANDE, sister of the groom. DEATH 1899 Nov 23 Thursday-- John SVETISCH died at his Laurium home yesterday afternoon. He was as prominent figure of this city and conducted a saloon, for the past 10 years. He was about 60 years old and leaves a wife and nine children. The funeral will be held Friday from the Austrian church. He had been employed in Hancock as a stone mason. The body will be sent today to Jackson, Michigan for burial as his aged mother lives there. He has two brothers in this area and will accompany the body to Jackson. MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 24 Friday-- At Sacred Heart Church, Calumet yesterday, Leonard DEROSIER, Jr. wed Miss Annie SULLIVAN, both of Calumet. DEATH 1899 Nov 24 Friday-- Anton MILLER, the well-known brew master, died at his Lake Linden home Wednesday morning. He was born in Germany 1846 Feb 13. In 1869 he emigrated to America and settled in Houghton where he was married to Miss Kathleen JOHNS in 1874. He lived in Houghton 7y years after he was married and than he moved to Lake Linden. He returned to Houghton and worked at two breweries there. He then moved back to Lake Linden and was brew master at Bosch Brewery there and was the first one at that plant and he stayed there for many years. He is survived by a wife and 6 children-- John; Tony; Mary; Frank; Victor and Peter. One son, Charles, is dead. Burial at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 24 Friday- On Wednesday at Holy Rosary church, Lake Linden, Jeremiah L YNCH of Flint, Michigan wed Miss Anna SMITH of Lake Linden. They will live at Flint, Michigan where the groom has an interest in a street paving business. MARRIAGE 1899 Nov 24 Friday-- At Holy Rosary church, Lake Linden on Wednesday morning, Nicholas GIRARD and Miss Anna FALLER. The bestmen were John GIRARD and Henry HARBOUR and the bridesmaids were Misses Emma KUSE and Anna GIRARD. For many years he owned a small farm near Hurontown. He leaves a wife and no children. He had a valuable sandstone quarry on his farm but he only used it very little. He was 64 years old and conducted a livery business in Chassell. He was born in St Augustine, Quebec, Canada.. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. NEWS ITEM 1899 Dec 4 Monday-- Harry TREGONING of Grover; Benjamin VIAL, Stephen NICHOLS and Stanley VERRAN left Hancock on the late train Sunday night for New York. They will take a steamer to Southampton and than go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND to visit relatives. DEATH 1899 Dec 6 Wednesday-- Willard E. GETCHELL, a Lake Superior pioneer, died at his Allouez home yesterday. For more than 30 years he has been a resident o f the copper country. He was born at Mathias, Maine 1822 April 8 and was 78 years old.. ... He came to the copper country in the early 60's and has been here ever since. He leaves a widow, two daughters and one son-Mrs. Fred SMITH of Allouez; Mrs. N.B. McGEE of Crystal Falls, Michigan and Fred W. GETCHELL of Minnesota. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATH 1899 Dec 11 Monday-- John LEARY on Saturday fell to his death in the Calumet and Hecla mine. He was the sole support of his widowed mother, three sisters and one brother. His father died in the same mine some years ago. He was 22 years old. DEATH 1899 Dec 14 Thursday-- John FOLEY, another of the early pioneers of Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County died Tuesday at his home. He had a liquor business and lived in Keweenaw County for the last 50 years. He was born in Ireland in 1831 and came to Eagle Harbor in 1848. He spent 3 years at Isle Royale mine than came back to Eagle Harbor and started the liquor business in 1854 and later had a meat market. He is survived by a wife and 12 grown up children-Mrs. Justin ZUGAR of Duluth; Miss Linnie FOLEY of Minneapolis; Miss Allie of Hancock; Misses Kittie, Mollie, Annie and Fannie of Eagle Harbor; Miss Lila at school at Ypsilanti, Michigan; Messrs. Albert, George and Michael of Eagle Harbor. Burial will be at Eagle Harbor cemetery. NEWS ITEM 1899 Dec 15 Friday-- Miss Ada PRNBERTHY of Chicago is in Lake Linden soliciting members for a class in instrumental music. CORNISH PROBABLE DEATHS 1899 Dec 16 Saturday-Mrs. Mary WIDMAEIR died at the Calumet home of her daughter, Mrs. Louise KARKEET wife of Thomas, yesterday morning. She was one of the early settlers of the area. She was 77 years old She came to Calumet 7 months ago to spend her remaining days with her daughter, Louise. Besides Louise she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. John LAURE of Cleveland, Ohio and a son-- George of Hancock. Burial will be in the old Hancock cemetery. CORNISH KARKEET 1899 Dec 20 Wednesday-Mrs. Ann COONEY died at her Ripley home Tuesday. She was 58 years old and she left a husband and six sons-- Anthony, Wm, Michael, John, Edward, Frank and daughter, Annie, burial at old Hancock cemetery. WING, both of Calumet DEATH 1899 Dec 22 Friday-- John KELLER died yesterday at his home in Hancock. He was born in Hancock about 22 years ago. He enlisted in the Army and served in Cuba in the Spanish American war. While there he contracted malaria and finally died of it. He was buried in the old Hancock cemetery. He was 75 years old and for 20 years has been a resident of Calumet. The funeral will be held at St Louis church Saturday morning and burial will follow at lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATH 1899 Dec 23 Saturday-- Anton KROWAC, an employee of the Tamarack mine, died at the company's hospital yesterday. He was of middle age and left a family in Austria. CORNISH 1899 Dec 26 Tuesday-- George HOCKING resigns his position at the Planter Saloon at the end of this week to go into business for himself. CORNISH DEATH 1899 Dec 26 Tuesday-Mrs. Etta HANSEN, formerly Miss Etta BISCOMBE, died Sunday at the home of her parents in Hurontown. She was married last October to Emert C. HANSEN, who survives her as well as her parents. HIND, both of Houghton DEATH 1899 Dec 28 Thursday-- Louis DESJARDIN, a single man about 26 years old, died Tuesday from lung trouble H e worked at the Dollar Bay smelting works. He will be buried at the Catholic cemetery in Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1899 Dec 28 Thursday-- An article in our paper yesterday referring to a query from a CORNWALL, ENGLAND newspaper to the whereabouts of a lady named either STEPHENS or JAMES, brought a response. She is in Park City, UTAH and she is Mrs. Elizabeth JAMES. For years the family lived at Calumet Her husband was a miner in Calumet and they had a daughter, now married and a son. The family moved in March 1884 to Arizona, then to California where they lived several year and finally to Park City, Utah. Mrs. JAMES's people lived at TALLEYWARN STREET, CAMBORNE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND and owned property there. It is presumed that Mrs. JAMES is the only heir to the property. DEATH 1899 Dec 28 Thursday-- John REMFREY, saloonkeeper, died yesterday at his Laurium home at the age of 50 years. He has resided in Calumet when Red Jacket and Calumet were mere hamlets.
