1884 January 10 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Saturday afternoon, Mrs. James FRY, wife of James, aged 
52 years, was found dead in her Calumet home of inflammation of the 
lungs. She has lived in the copper country since 1860, first settling 
at the Mesnard mine. She was a born in Devonshire, England.
         
DIED- 1884 January 1-Peter DEAN, aged 55 years, a former resident of 
this section, died in Duluth, Minnesota. He left an estate worth $60,000.00. 
He gave a number of lots to the town to be used as a park.
         
DIED- Last Thursday evening, Mike FLEMING, a miner, employed in the Quincy 
mine, was instantly killed by a delayed explosion of s charge in a hole 
that he thought had been exploded. He leaves a wile and large number of 
children, including two Sons who were working in the mine at the time

1884 JANUARY 17 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
NEWS ITEM- Last Tuesday James TREVARTHA, a miner at the Calumet and 
Hecla mine was knocked down by a fall of rock in the mine. He will 
be laid up for a number of weeks as his spine was struck.
         
DIED- Last Thursday morning Walter HARRIS, son of Capt William HARRIS 
of Lake Linden, died at Ann Arbor, Michigan from hemorrhaging of the 
lungs. The remains were shipped to Hancock for the funeral services 
at Lake Linden.
         
DIED- 1884 January 17, At the Quincy mine, Dr Thomas U. FLANNER, aged 
52 years, died of Bright's disease. He was born in Ohio and emigrated 
to Lake Superior nearly 30 years ago. For a long time was the chief 
physician at the Minnesota Mine, Ontonagon County, Michigan . After 
many years he went to Springfield, Missouri and practiced medicine there. 
He than came to the Quincy mine. Funeral services were held on Friday at 
the Congregational church of Hancock, The remains were shipped to 
Springfield for burial.
         
MARRIED- 1884 January 10, At the home of the bride's parents in Lake 
Linden; Mr. Lyman Roy MELLAN to Charlotte Amelia BARKELL, both of Lake 
Linden.
         

1884 January 24 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED Mrs. (no Christian a name shown) TOMCHAK, of Raymbaultown died rather 
suddenly last Wednesday morning of heart disease.
         

1884 January 31 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Tuesday William PHILLIPS, an employee of the Calumet and Hecla 
mining company, buried his daughter, Bessie; age 7 years at the Calumet 
cemetery. She died of diphtheria.
         
DIED- Last Monday afternoon Charles SANGALA, who was walking on the track 
of the Mineral Range Railroad towards the Osceola mine, was struck by a 
snowplow attached to the locomotive of the train on its way to Hancock. 
He received injuries from which he died the following morning.
         
         
1884 February 7 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DEATH- Peter William DAPPA, employed at the old Cliff Mine, Keweenaw 
County, was killed Monday night by falling down a mine shaft. He was a 
young msn and unmarried.
         
         
1884 February 21 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- 1884 February 14 TONKIN, Johannah, aged 23 years, At her father's 
residence, Atlantic Mine, Capt William TONKIN.
         
DIED 1884 February 17 TONKIN, Rebecca L., aged 21 years, at the residence 
of her father, Capt William TONKIN, Atlantic mine. Both women died of 
consumption and had been invalids for a long time. They were buried Tuesday 
at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. They are survived by their father and 
one brother.
         

1884 February 28-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Friday, Antoine COGNANTE, while at work in the No 2 shaft of the 
Hecla mine, was struck by a piece of timber that fell down from a level 
above while loading on a skip. It caused one leg to be amputated and the 
other severely hurt, the shock proved too much for him and he died on Sunday. 
He leaves a widow and two children.
         
NEWS ITEM- Last Monday night Theodore MURDREAU, while at work in the Hecla 
mine, had his right arm broken by falling rock.
         
NEWS ITEM- Last Monday Alfred GLASSNER, while at work on I he scaffolding 
in the Lake Linden mill, fell in such a way to receive a serious scalp 
wound. Seven days idleness will be required of him.
         
         
1884 March 20 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- 1884 March 18 WHITCOMB, Hattie, aged 20 years, wife of Mr. W. G. 
WHITCOMB, died at her home in Calumet. She was the daughter of Mr. G. W. 
ROLISON of Hancock. The remains will be taken to Hancock for the funeral 
on Tuesday. Her husband and 2 tiny children will mourn her.
         
DIED- Last Sunday, Mrs. Isaac JONES, wife of the track boss on the Hecla 
and Torch Railroad, from kidney trouble after suffering one year.
         
DIED- 1884 March 11, Tuesday- Mr. Alexander TAYLOR, an old resident of the 
Hecla mine rock house, died at his Calumet home. He had a cancer of the 
stomach.
         
         
1884 March 27 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
NEWS ITEM- One day last week the home of Charles JOHNSON, near the Allouez 
mine, Keweenaw County, burned down. He had $2300.00 in various dollar bills 
and $100.00 in gold and silver that ran together. He could have put in one 
of the banks but chose to keep at home.
         
         
1884 April 10 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- On Monday morning Gilbert BATH died at this home at the Phoenix 
mine, Keweenaw mine, of softening of the brain. He was an old man and 
leaves a large family of children mostly married.
         
         
1884 April 17 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Monday morning Samuel F. HODGE, aged 67 years, who for over 
30 years was connected with Lake Superior mines, in the capacity of 
furnishing mines with steam engines, general mining machinery, etc., died 
at his home in Detroit, Michigan. He died of Bright's disease. He was 
born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He landed in Detroit a poor, young mechanic 
and rose to a man of immense wealth. He leaves a wife and several 
children and an estate worth $750,000.00. He will be buried today 
in Detroit, Michigan. He was born in ENGLAND
         
         
1884 April 17 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Thursday, Mrs. Stephen HARRIS, widow, aged 79 years, and mother 
of Wm. HARRIS, died at her home in Houghton, The funeral was Sunday.
         
MARRIAGE-1884 April 15 at the residence of the bride's sister, Mrs. D. 
H. PERRY at Superior, Wisconsin, Mr. Millard GRAY, attorney at law to 
Miss Annie M. BROCKWAY, M.  D., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. BROCKWAY 
of Clifton, Keweenaw County, Michigan. Both are of Duluth, Minnesota.

MARRIED-1884 April 21-At the residence of the bride's father at Hancock, 
Mr. John DAKIN to Miss Elizabeth HOOPER, both of Hancock.
         
         
1884 May 8 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Friday Philogene PAPEAN , a painter in the employ of the Hecla 
and Torch Lake Railroad , fell from the rear car of an up tram, striking 
his head, causing his instantaneous death. Funeral service was held last 
Sunday on the lake. He was a widower, leaving one child living in Canada.
         
PROBATE MATTER- IN the matter of the estate of James WALLS, deceased, born 
in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, his wife Elizabeth WALLS asked the court to appoint, 
William EVANS as the administrator of the estate.
         
         
1884 May 15 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
MARRIED- 1884 April 26 At the Methodist parsonage at Houghton; Mr. Henry 
WILLIAMS and Miss Emma Ann FLOYD, both of Calumet.
         
DIED- Last Tuesday, Oscar ISAACSON, employed at the Cliff mine, Keweenaw 
County, was killed by falling out of a bucket into a shaft.
         
DIED- Sebastien LAPPO the man who killed George OSBORNE, the toll collector 
on the Houghton bridge Sunday night, May 4, has pleaded guilty, claiming it 
was done in sell defense. He was examined in court last Friday and bound 
over to appear at the next term of the circuit court. Mr. OSBORNE leaves a 
wife and children. HE WAS BORN IN CORNWALL, ENGLAND.
         

1884 June 19 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
NEWS ITEM- Dave OSBORN and John PFLUGGE, wipers in the Calumet mine engine 
house, were both slightly injured during the week, They got their arms or 
hands in the way of the machines. OSBORN's wound was between the elbow and 
shoulder and PFLUGGE's had his finger above the first joint sharply cut.

MARRIED- 1884 June 26 Tuesday- At the residence of the bride's father in 
St Clair, Michigan- Mr. Henry Wallbank JONES, M. D. of Houghton, Michigan 
to Miss Anna Barnard JENKS, daughter of Mr. R. W. JENKS.
         
MARRIED- 1884 June26 Tuesday, at the home of the bride's parents in Houghton, 
Michigan- Mr. Allen F. REES of Houghton and Miss Carrie E. WILLIAMS of Boston, 
Massachusetts.
         
MARRIED- 1884 June 14 at Hurontown, Mr. William A. TRATHEN to Miss Elizabeth 
REDSTONE.
         
MARRIED-1884 June 14 at Hurontown, Mr. Richard DUNSTAN to Miss Mary E. 
TRATHEN.
         
MARRIED- 1884 June 14 at Hurontown, Mr. Richard J. HODGE to Miss Jane 
HODGE.
         
NEWS ITEM- Last Tuesday Fred EATON, a clerk in the Hecla mine office, was 
injured by a runaway horse. He was getting into the carriage when the horse 
was startled by his pulling on the reins and took off dumping, Mr. EATON to 
the ground. He and his family will leave the Calumet and Hecla mine employ 
in September and go to Silver Lake, Kansas and raise stock.
         
NEWS ITEM- Two former residents of this area are in charge of the Old 
Dominion Copper Company in Arizona. Mr. A. P. THOMAS is praised by the 
newspapers out there for his erecting machinery in the mine and Capt. 
Joshua D. HOSKING for his skill as mine and underground manager.

MARRIED- 1884 July 8 Thursday, At Lake Linden Rev HIGGINS of Calumet, Mr. 
George HORE to Mrs. Mary F. MANSFIELD.
         
         
1884 July 17 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Richard KING, aged 54 years, an old resident of Calumet, died at 
his home in Calumet, last Tuesday of cancer of the stomach. Funeral will 
be Thursday at the Calumet Methodist church.
         
         
1884 July 24 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Tuesday, a boy named Ben MERRITT of the Allouez mine, Keweenaw 
county, while riding in a wagon in Allouez, with adults, fell out of it 
in such a manner that it ran over him and killed him.
         
         
1884 July 31 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Mary UREN, deceased, her 
husband, Richard UREN asked that he be appointed administrator, date of 
court hearing 1884 July 31.
         
         
1884 August 14 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Monday evening Edward MEDLIN was coming out of the Lake Linden 
stamp mill and her became dizzy and fell on the railroad track and the 
train over him crushing his leg so that it had to be amputated. He died on 
Tuesday at the hospital. He was buried on Wednesday.
         
DIED- Last Wednesday evening , Capt John HOAR, aged 67 years, a successful 
merchant and prominent citizen for 25 years, died at his home in East Houghton 
due to kidney problems . As a young man he emigrated from CORNWALL, ENGLAND, 
and settled in Pennsylvania and in 1856 he came to Keweenaw Point, Lake 
Superior and engaged in mining work until 1859 when he came to Houghton, 
and went into business with his brother, R. M. HOAR, until the brother died. 
He leaves a wife and two children, Wm B. HOAR and Mrs. J. B. STURGIS. The 
funeral will be tomorrow from his home and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, 
Houghton.
         
NEWS ITEM- Nicholas SEITZ, a miner at the Hecla mine, had his leg broken in 
two places by falling rock last week.
         
DIED- Yesterday, Michael J. HARRINGTON, a inner employed in the Osceola mine, 
was a truck by a piece of hanging rock and had his leg crushed. His leg was 
amputated and he died shortly after.
         
Died- Last Saturday evening, John BODEN of Red Jacket while engaged with a  
"chivaree" crowd and was accidentally shot in the head by William CHIPMAN. 
He soon died of the wound. Mr. CHIPMAN was held on the charge of manslaughter.
         
         
1884 August 28- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MIHICGAN
         
DIED- 1884 August 27 at Houghton, Louis J. HEBERT, infant son of George S. 
and Elizabeth G. HEBERT, age 2 months and 5 days.
         
         
1884 September 4 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
MARRIED- 1884 August 18, at the residence of Mr. Hugh McRAY of Lake Linden, 
Mr. Murdoch McLEOD to Miss Johana MATHESON.
         
MARRIED - 1884 August 23 at the Lake Linden Methodist Parsonage, Mr. Matthew 
Henry WAREHAM to Mrs. Annie MAND, both of Lake Linden.
         
MARRIED- 1884 August 26, at the bride's residence, Lake Linden, Mr. Thomas 
DUNSTAN to Miss Elizabeth May RALPH.
         
DIED- Last Monday morning while Mr. PEARCE of Red Jacket was going to work, 
he noted a body hanging against the outhouse as he passed by. He found it 
was Mr. William H. RULE, age 37, of CORNWALL, ENGLAND, son of James and 
Grace had committed suicide. After cutting the body down the coroner was 
called. Mr. and Mrs. BAWDEN, parents of the widow, testified that the night 
before he asked them for money to buy liquor. He was sober at the time they 
said.
         
         
1884 September 18 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE ,HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Saturday night, a boy Jabez OLDS, while trying to throw on a belt 
in the Allouez stamp mill, Keweenaw County, was caught by the revolving wheel 
and before it could be stopped had both legs broken. He died soon afterwards.
         
DIED- Last Wednesday afternoon, two miners named John BESSOLO and John TROTTA 
were injured by falling rock. Mr. TROTTA died that night and Mr. BESSOLO had 
his legs slightly injured.
         
         
1884 September 25 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- 1884 September 24, At her parents home in Houghton, Jessie BAIRD, 
daughter of Mr Andrew and Jane BAIRD, aged 11 years, 2 months.
         
         
1884 October 2 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Sunday Bill BROWN of Lake Linden had trouble with his drunken 
wife, who struck his stomach with a piece of wood, causing him to die. She 
was held for murder.
         
DIED- Last Friday night Timothy DRISCOLL, an old resident of Houghton, 
was last seen alive Friday night. He was found floating in the lake Wednesday 
by HOAR's dock. He leaves a wife and several children.
         
DIED-1884 September 28 Charles BENNETT, aged 24, born in Michigan, employed 
in unloading a coal vessel at POPE's dock, fell from a runway, while on his 
back was hit on the body. He died as a result of the accident.
         
         
1884 October 30 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
PROBATE MATTER- IN the matter of the estate of Bradford F. PLEWS, deceased, 
his wife, Martha PLEWS, was appointed executrix of his estate. Hearing date 
1884 October 15.
         
PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Elizabeth SNELL, deceased, 
her husband, Joseph N. SNELL, was appointed administrator. Hearing date 1
884 Oct 16.
         
         
1884 November 6 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN

DIED- Last Monday Louis VALSOVANNEAU was unloading the ship in No 3 Shaft 
of the Hecla mine, a piece of rock that had been dislodged at the 10th level, 
fell on him striking him on the neck and hip. It crushed the hip and pelvis 
causing his death on Wednesday.
         
         
1884 November 13 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED AND CARD OF THANKS-I want to thank my many friends in Hancock for 
their kind sympathy in my hour of trial incident in the burial of my dear 
wife on November 7, 1884. SIGNED Josiah JAMES
         
DIED- Last Wednesday, while the train on the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County, 
was making its last trip to the Allouez stamp mill, Joseph LaFEVRE was 
instantly killed. Its not known if he was lying on the track or might have 
leaned over when the train struck him. When last seen he was under the 
influence of liquor.
         
NEWS ITEM- Last Tuesday James BROOKS, a timber man in the Atlantic mine, 
while placing timbers in the mine, he was struck by falling rock, causing 
his leg to the knee to be amputated.
         

1884 December 4 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Tuesday night, while the heavy snowstorm was prevailing, Martin 
ROWE, living on a farm near the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County, who had been 
to the store at the Cliff Mine, started for home but failed to reach there. 
A large search was made and on Thursday his body was found about 300 yards 
from his house, he was covered with snow.
         
         
1884 December 18 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Last Friday Judge Wm LEAN of Houghton, died at the Butterfield House 
of asthma. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and was nearly 65 years old. He 
was a pioneer of the copper country. He was judge of the Probate Court at 
his death. Sunday he was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He leaves 
a wife, Jane.
         

1885 January 1 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN
         
DIED- Capt Amos H. SCOTT, a resident of this section for over 20 years, 
was buried last Sunday.
