These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. _____________________________________________________________________ The following obituaries were all extracted from the MINING GAZETTE by Dick and June Ross and transcribed by various volunteers for the Houghton Co., MI USGenWeb Project. _____________________________________________________________________ The Mining Gazette Date: February 15, 1923 Decedent: Helen LAMONT Headline: Death of Mrs. Lamont Well Known Calumet Woman Summoned After Lengthy Illness Mrs. Helen Lamont, fifty-two years of age, wife of Donald Lamont, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mr. Lamont's mother, Mrs. E. Lamont, Rockland street, following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Lamont had many friends in the district to whom news of her death has come with keen regret. She was especially prominent in civic affairs, being an active member of the Calumet Woman's club up to the time she became ill. Mrs. Lamont was chairman of the club's civic committee and was one of the organizers of the playground association here. Mrs. Lamont was born in Caro, Mich. She came to Calumet in 1895 and for fifteen years was engaged as a teacher in the local schools. In 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Lamont left for Florida and in 1920 took up their residence in Detroit. They returned to Calumet last July. Surviving are the husband and one brother E. W. MCPHAIL of Ludington, Mich. Friends are asked to omit flowers. The remains will be shipped to Caro Friday morning following a short service at the Lamont home on Rockland street. Burial will be made Saturday in Caro. Transcribed by: Jacquie Sherrer ------------------------------------------------- The Mining Gazette Date: February 3, 1923 Decedent: Neil LAMONT Headline: Former Lake Linden Resident Succumbs in Hebron, Neb. Neil LAMONT, formerly of Lake Linden, passed away in Hebron, Nebraska, recently according to advices received here. The family moved from the Copper Country a quarter century ago. While here Mr. Lamont was in the employ of the Calument & Hecla Mining Co. The deceased was 89 years of age and his death is believed to have been hastened by a bad fall which he experienced about three weeks prior to his demise. Three daughters, Mrs. Charles MERRIAM of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. CALLOWAY of Montrose, Cal., Miss Margaret at home and two sons, John of Hibbing and Neil of Hebron, survive. Transcribed by: Jacquie Sherrer ------------------------------------------------- Publication: Mining Gazette Date: March 28, 1915 Decedent: Teckla LANTTO Headline: Young Woman is Dead Miss Teckla Lantto, age 16, of Raymbaultown, died late on Friday following a long illness with tuberculosis. Scherr ------------------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: April 9, 1924 Decedent: Mrs. Freda LASANEN Headline: OLD COLONY MATRON PASSES - Resident of District for Forty-Three Years is Summoned Mrs. Freda Lasanen, aged 82, of Old Colony location, for the past forty three years a resident of Copper Country, died at her home Monday after a short illness. The deceased was born in Finland and came to America when a young girl. Besides the husband the following children survive: August, James, John, and Charles at home, Mrs. Margaret Honkanen, of Calumet; Mrs. Anna Orkola of Minnesota and Mrs. Fred Gardner of Oregon. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, awaiting word from relatives. ---------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: March 6, 1924 Decedent: Frank R. LANDER Headline: KIN DIES IN DETROIT - Well Known Former Resident Summoned in City News has been received here by Mrs. Peter Berryman of Amygdaloid street of the death in Detroit of Frank R. Lander, aged 73, formerly of Calumet. Mr. Lander had been ill for the past two months and death was not unexpected. Mr. Lander was born in England and came to this country when a young man. After working in the mines in Butte, Mont., for several years he came to Osceola where he was employed by the Osceola Mining company. When the South Kearsarge mine was opened he became its operating head and was the superintendent there until about ten years ago when he moved to Detroit. The deceased was well known here in mining circles and had a large circle of friends in the community. He was a member of the Calumet Lodge, F. & A. M. Besides the widow, a daughter, Bessie, both of Detroit, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Stevens of Wolverine, survive. Burial was in Detroit. ---------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: May 27, 1924 Decedent: Eliel LAUREN Headline: DEATH OF ELIEL LAUREN - Houghton Businessman is Summoned After Lengthy Illness Eliel Lauren, well known Houghton businessman and member of the firm of Crago & Lauren, tailors, died Saturday morning at St. Joseph's hospital after a lenthy illness. Mr. Lauren was 52 years of age and was born in Finland. He came to the United States 32 years ago and for the past 19 years was a resident of Houghton. The widow, a daughter, Elma Marie and a son Edward of New York City survive. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with services from the home. Rev. Matt Pesonen, of Hancock, will officiate and burial will be in Forest Hill. The body was removed to the Peterson funeral parlors, Hancock, and was removed to the home last night. ---------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: July 8, 1924 Decedent: Olug LEIDE Headline: PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES - Oluf Leide, Aged 81, Summoned After Brief Illness Oluf Leide, aged 81, died at his home at 220 Kearsarge street Sunday after a brief illness. Mr. Leide was a pioneer resident of the district and one of is (sic) first settlers. He was born in Norway and came to this country fifty years ago, making his home in the Calumet district continuously since. He was for a number of years and until four years ago, when he retired, employed as a carpenter by Edward Ulseth. Besides the widow, the deceased is survived by four children, Mrs. Hans Ulseth of Calumet, Mrs. Oluf Ulseth of Chicago and Misses Olga and Helga at home. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence. Rev. Edward Olson, pastor of the Swedish Lutheran church, officiating. Interment will be in Lake View. ---------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: May 27, 1924 Decedent: Thomas LESAGE Headline: MOHAWK RESIDENT PASSES - Thomas LeSage, Aged Sixty Five, Dies at Home of Son Thomas LeSage, esteemed Copper Country resident, died at noon Saturday at the home of his son, Arthur, of Mohawk. The deceased made his home in Calumet until seven years ago. Prior to his illness, he was employed at Gay. He is survived by the following children: Arthur of Mohawk, Raymond, of Milwaukee; William of Monrow; Hillarr, of Detroit, and Eleonore of Mohawk. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, awaiting word from absent relatives. ---------------------------------------- The Mining Gazette Date: June 8, 1922 Decedent: Infant LEVREU Headline: Dies in Father's Arms. The unexpected death of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Sharkey LEVREU occured yesterday morning. Mr. Levreu picked up the child before departing for work and the infant passed away in his arms. Transcribed by: Jacquie Sherrer ------------------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: March 7, 1924 Decedent: Hugo LOGAN Headline: WINONA YOUNG MAN DIES FROM SCALDS - Studs' in Boiler Blow Out at Pampa Land Co. Mill Hugo Logam, 18 years old, died at 8 o'clocl Thursday morning from scalds sustained when studs in a boiler blew out at the saw mill of the Pampa Land Co., at Winona. The exact cause of the accident, which occurred at 4 o'clock Thursday morning, is not known. When the studs of the boiler gave way under pressure of steam, Logam, who was engaged in work in the boiler room, was completely showered with scalding water and live steam from the boiler, resulting in serious burns on many parts of the body. It was from the result of these burns that death occurred four hours after the accident. The deceased was a popular young man in the Winona community, having resided there for many years and having attended Winona public schools. He is survived by his mother, one sister and two brothers. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ---------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: June 17, 1924 Decedent: James C. LONG Headline: DEATH OF JAMES C. LONG James C. Long, 50 years of age, died yesterday afternoon at St. Joseph's hospital. Mr. Long was taken to the hospital Sunday and operated on yesterday, his death following a few hours later. Mr. Long was born at Greenland but lived almost all of his life in Houghton and Hancock. He is survived by his mother in Greenland, has widow in West Houghton, a son, James at home and two daughters, Miss Helen at home and Mrs. Martin Meyers in Painesdale. The funeal will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Ignatious church with burial in Forest Hill cemetery. ---------------------------------------- The Mining Gazette Date: November 18, 1919 Decedent: George LUKEY Headline: Death of George Lukey Old Resident of the Copper Country, Twenty Years at Isle Royale George LUKEY, a resident of the Copper Country for the past 30 years died at his home in Houghton, Friday, after an illness of six months, from Hodgekin's disease, a somewhat rare malady. Mr. Lukey was born in Cornwall Sept. 15, 1845, and emigrated to the United States in 1870, coming to Marquette county, remaining until 1888 when he removed to Connecticut, after a short residence there coming to the Copper Country, locating at Calumet, where he remained until the Isle Royale mine re-opened 20 years ago, where he was employed as a machinist until his death. Mr. Lukey was a devote Christian all his life, being affiliated with the Hancock Congregational church under whose auspices the funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house, the Rev. U. G. RICH officiating. There survive, the widow, one daughter, Mrs. George HARRIS, and two sons, H. E. Lukey, clerk, Isle Royale Copper company, and F. G. Lukey, salesman for the A. Milne Steel company of New York. Transcribed by: Jacquie Sherrer ------------------------------------------------- Publication: The Mining Gazette Obit Date: March 16, 1924 Decedent: Nathan LURIE Headline: NATHAN LURIE IS SUMMONED - Former Well Known Resident Dies Suddenly in Green Bay Word has been received here of the sudden death in Green Bay, early yesterday morning of Nathan Lurie, former well known local businessman. He had been in declining health for several months but his death was unexpected. Mr. Lurie was in the wholesale liquor business in Calumet for a number of years and left here in 1918 for Green Bay where he entered the wholesale paper business with son, Gershon Lurie. Eight months ago his health failed and he was forced to take an inactive part in the business. The son, Gershon, was in Calumet this week and left for his home last evening. The widow and one son survive. The funeral will be held Monday with burial in the new Waldeheim cemetery, Chicago. ---------------------------------------- Publication: Mining Gazette Date: March 30, 1918 Decedent: Mrs. Katherine LYONS Headline: Death of Mrs. Lyons Old Resident of Copper and Iron Country is Called to Her Reward. Mrs. Katherine Lyons, died yesterday at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. J. Summers, 169 Douglas street following an illness due to the infirmities of age. Mrs. Lyons was ___ years old. She was a native of County Galway, Ireland, but had spent the greater part of her life in the United States. She formerly lived in Hancock but a number of years ago moved to Michigamme, where she lived until ten years ago, returning to Houghton to make her home with her daughter Mrs. Summers. She is survived by the following children: Miss Mary, Chicago; Michael, Globe, Ariz.; Thomas, William and Frank, Marquette; Mrs. Summers and Miss Eleanor, Houghton; Mrs. H. P. McCoy, Tucson, Ariz.
