DIED-Mathia SEMBLA, aged 26 years, died Sunday morning from typhoid pneumonia at his home in South Range. He was born in Finland and came to Calumet when one and one half years old. He was a graduate of Calumet High School. He was a bookeeper at the South Range Bank till his death. He spent one year at the Michigan School of Mining but after one year had to quit due to poor health. He leaves a wife and two small daughters; parents; 3 brothers and 3 sisters all of Calumet. The sisters are Misses Nettie; Lily and Edith and the brothers are Oscar; William and Otto. The funeral will take place from the residence and the burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. DIED-Herman VARDIO, aged about 28 years, died at this boarding house on Quincy Hill, Hancock on Sunday night. He was a single man with no relatives in this country. The funeral was held yesterday and burial was at Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEM- John JENKINS of Kearsage Mine has left for CORNWALL, ENGLAND where he expects to be for some time. DIED- The remains of the late Mrs August DEMONTHIER will be buried from the Calumet residence. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Mrs Cora Pauli PEARSON, aged 24 years, died at her Lake Linden home on Sunday midnight of consuption. She was born at Calumet on 1881 October 14, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph A. PAULL, of Lake Linden. When as a child she and her parents moved from Calumet to L ake Linden and lived there ever since. Seven years ago she married Professor J. M. PEARSON and moved to lower Michigan. She travelled with her mother and sister, Myra around the West for the past 18 months to try and find relief from her illness. She leaves a husband, two small children Paul, aged 6 years and Florence, 3 and one half years, her parents, a sister-Myra and 2 brothers-Reuben and Eldred, the last of Los Angeles, California. The funeral will be held tomorrow from her home and burial at Maple Hill Cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- Word has been received by William RODGERS of Tamarack Mine Junio, that John ROWE had been killed by being a victim of a premature mine blast, in the West Kitty Mine, ST AGNES, CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He worked at the Tamarack Junior Mine for several years and left for CORNWALL about one year ago. He is survived by a wife and one child. 1906 May 2 Wednesday- NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs Isaac WALTHAM and three children, also Mrs Henry BENNETTS and daughter, left Painesdale for CORNWALL, ENGLAND last night. They will not return to America but have decided to remain the rest of their days at their former home. NEWS ITEM- Luke DURAND, brother of Jerry DURAND of Lake Linden, arrived here this week from Fall River, Massachussetts, and is visiting with his brother. He says he will make his future home in Calumet. 1906 May 3 Thursday- DIED- Henry MAKKELA, a miner employed by the Baltic Mining Company, committed suicide by slashing his throat in the outhouse behind the boardinghouse where he was living at the Baltic Mine Location on Tuesday evening. He was born in Finland and had worked at the Baltic Mine for the past 8 months. He had lived in this boarding house one day. No one knows why he did this. Prior to this he lived in South Range. He leaves a cousin at Hurontown. It was learned that MAKKELA was a victim of epilepsy. The funeral will be today and the burial at Hancock. DIED- Mrs Mary KESKEY wife of Charles, the woman who died at Tamarack on Monday evening, her funeral was held at the Hubbell German Lutheran Church yesterday afternoon. The burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Lake Linden. She leaves a husband and family. NEWS ITEM- Charles REPATH left Calumet last night for Anaconda, Montana, after visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs Richard REPATH. He has a responsible position with a mining company in Anaconda. NEWS ITEM- Miss Clara PHILLIPS of Albion, Michigan expects to leave Calumet next Monday for REDRUTH, CORNWALL, where she will make her home with her grandmother for some time to come. NEWS ITEM- Frank DALEY has left Calumet to go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND to visit his old home for a few months. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs Ernest JULIAN, of Calumet, will leave next Monday for CORNWALL, ENGLAND where they will visit relatives and friends. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of John MARAY, deceased, his widow, Maggie MARAT was appointed administratix of the estate. 1906 May 4 Friday- NEWS ITEM- Capt. and Thomas WHITTLE and William H. ROBERTS left Hancock for CORNWALL, ENGLAND, where they spend the greater of the summer visiting relatives and friends NEWS ITEM- Jerry SULLIVAN; John ST. ARNOLD and John GREGET left Sidnaw to go to Cobalt, Ontario Canada on Sunday. This is the first body of men to go to the Prickett Mining interest who are conducting exploring operations in that district. DIED- The funeral of the late Henry KYALLANEN, aged 78 years, a farmer who resides two miles from the Atlantic Mine, took place yesterday from the Atlantic Finnish Church. Burial was at the Atlantic Cemetery. He leaves a wife and three children, all grown up. DIED- Peter DELARUNTI, a miner died yesterday morning at the Baltic Mine, by falling down four levels in the shaft and died instantly. He was employed at the mine only two months, having come here from the Franklin Mine. He leaves a wife and one child to survive him. The funeral will take place this afternoon. MARRIAGE- Fred MONNVILLE of Isle Royale Mine Location married Miss Selina NANEVILLE of Rockland, Ontonagon County, Michigan, yesterday morning at the Houghton Court of Justice Lawrence L. CROZE. John E. WERTIN and John RUNDELL were the witnesses. 1906 May 5 Saturday- YESTERDAY MARRIAGE LICINSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Henry LARSEN and Hilda ELKSTROM, both of South Range. NEWS ITEM- Miss Ida KOPPANA, of Pequaming has gone to Duluth, Minnesota to accept a position with the Finnish American Land Company. NEWS ITEM- Frank BARKELL who has arrived in Hancock from Chicago, Illinois has taken a position as motorman with the Street Railway Company. NEWS ITEM- Leonard CADWELL of Atlantic Mine Location will leave tonight for CORNWALL, ENGLAND for a visit of two months visiting relatives in his old home town. DIED- Daniel VAUCH, about 60 years old, of Calumet, died by a piece of falling rock on Thursday night at the Calumet and Hecla Mine, where he was one of the oldest employees of the mine. He is survived by six children- Daniel, Jr; William; Rose; Jacob; Carrie and Edla. He was one of the pioneers of the copper country. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the German Lutheran Church, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. 1906 May 6 Sunday YESTERDAY MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Kalle H. KANANEN and Katie KIVELA both of Winona. DIED- Mrs Mary MCCARTHY, aged about 66 years, died at the Hancock family residence on Friday n ight. She is survived by two sons- Bartholemew and Timothy and one daughter, Mrs Abraham OPIE. The funeral will be tomorrow morning at St. Patrick's Church, Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Frank HERMANN, aged 21 years, died yesterday morning at the Baltic Mine, by falling down the mine shaft. He is survived by his parents and a brother of Atlantic and a brother works at the Baltic Mine. The funeral will take place this afternoon at the Atlantic Finnish Church. Burial will be at the Atlantic Cemetery. CARD OF THANKS- Mr and Mrs TREVITHICK of Tamarack Mine No. 5 Shaft, wish to thank their many friends and neighbors for their kind expressions of sympathy received during the illness and subsequent death of their three years and 8 months old son. The memory of the many kind acts and deeds will long be cherished. 1906 May 8 Tuesday DIED- Frank IKONEN, aged 50 years, died Sunday at the Mohawk Mine Location, after a short illness. He is survived by a wife and two children. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Mohawk Finnish Church. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. DIED- John SLOCK, aged 37 years, died yesterday morning at his home in Houghton of heart failure, while dressing. He was born in Houghton 1868 July 13 and lived there all his life. For many years he was in the employ of L. HENNES and Company and after took a position with Capt. DUNN. He is survived by his wife, one child, 5 brothers- Joseph, Tony and Louis of Houghton; George of Bonner, Montana; Frank of Murray, Utah and one sister- Mrs Samuel ROBINSON of Lake Linden. The funeral will be Friday afternoon from Trinity Episcopal Church, Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. 1906 May 9 Wednesday DIED- Yesterday the body of the late William HEALY, formerlyl of Hancock, who died in Detroit, Michigan last fall was received in Houghton and was buried in the family plot in Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. His parents, Mr and Mrs William HEALY, reside in Detroit, now but he has two sisters in Hancock- Mrs Ennis MCCAULEY and Mrs Charles MATTHEWS. May 10- Nick KORPI of Kearsage and Kustaava LANINAHO of Calumet. 1906 May 10 Thursday NEWS ITEM- Yesterday Sheriff August BECK took an insane patient, Frank WOLFF, the man who drove a family from their home in Keweenaw County a few days ago, to the Newberry, Michigan Insane Asylum. DIED- Francis KING, of Trimountain, aged 26 years, died yesterday at the home of his sister- Mrs John A. MITCHELL, also of Trimountain. He is survived by three sisters- Mrs W.J. RICHARDS of Lake Linden; Mrs MITCHELL; Mrs Wesley CLARKE of Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County. The funeral will take place Friday from Mrs CLARKE'S home and burial will be at the Eagle Harbor Cemetery, Keweenaw County. NEWS ITEM- James RICKARD and daughter left Calumet for Wallace, Idaho where they will make their home. He formerly worked at the Mineral Range Railroad in the roundhouse. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs Steven TODD left Calumet for Chicago, Illinois where they will make their future home. NEWS ITEM- Mrs Thomas GEORGE and family left Calumet for Great Falls, Montana to make their home with Mr GEORGE who left earlier to accept work there. DIED- Mrs Norbert BOYER, aged 38 years, died at her Lake Linden home yesterday of heart disease. She was born in Lake Linden and lived there till her death. She leaves a husband, an adopted daughter, aged 16 years, her parents- Mr and Mrs Camille BOURDEAU of Lake Linden; three brothers- Lewis; Joseph and Camille BOURDEAU; and two sisters-Mrs Louis COULOMBE of Chassell and Mrs Gilbert DESJARDINS of Lake Linden. The funeral will be tomorrow morning at St. Joseph's Church, Lake Linden and burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Lake Linden. 1906 May 11 Friday MARRIAGE- Herbert S. LEMP of Boise City, Idaho married Mrss Marqueritte A. NOLAN of Hancock, daughter of County Supervisor and Mrs John John EICHKERN, of West Hancock, at the home of the bride's parents on Wednesday night. Mrs Charles LEWIS was the matron of honor and the best man was R.H. HALVERSON. They will reside in Boise City. MARRIAGE- Adolph MUSTANEN married Miss Ida KAISU, both of Hancock, Wednesday evening at the Hancock home of Mr and Mrs W. S. HENDRICKSON. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Tillie KATSU of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Miss Rose MUSTANEN of Hancock. John LOHELA was the best man. They will reside in Hancock. Isaac KOKKA and Sanna KAMPSI, both of Atlantic. 1906 May 12 Saturday NEWS ITEM- Thomas DUNSTAN of Atlantic has left for Duluth, Minnesota where he has accepted a position. NEWS ITEM- John WALLACE; George OSBORN; John TIGGS; J. H. WILLIAMS and William JEFFRY arrived yesterday in Painesdale from PENZANCE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND and will make their future homes here. Mr WALLACE has been on a visit to PENZANCE, CORNWALL for a few months and returning to Painesdale. The others are new to America. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs Arthur FELL, who have made their home at Painesdale the last 4 years left yesterday for Iron Mountain, Michigan where they will reside in the future. NEWS ITEM- Miss Maggie SULLIVAN of Houghton has gone to Butte, Montana where she will make her future home. 1906 May 13 Sunday DIED- The funeral of the late Herman KLUSSMAN, aged 59 years, who died at Dollar Bay Friday morning was held yesterday afternoon. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock. He was born in Germany and was a widower. He is survived by one brother. DIED- Mrs Emma Elizabeth KESSLER, wife of Frank KESSLER, aged 42 years, died at her home in Hubbell yesterday afternoon from a complication of diseases. She was born in Keweenaw County and moved to Hubbell where she lived at the time of her death. She leaves a husband; six daughters and two sons. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning from St. Cecelia's Church, Hubbell. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- The funeral of the late Mrs John MAATA, aged 18 years of Baltic, will be held at the Atlantic Finnish Church this afternoon. She had been ill for 5 months and died last Friday of consumption. She leaves a husband and small child. The burial was at the Atlantic Cemetery. NEWS ITEM- Mrs James REYNOLDS and child will arrive in Painesdale the latter part of this week from CORNWALL, ENGLAND to join Mr REYNOLDS and make their home here. NEWS ITEM- Miss Ida BATTEN will arrive in Painesdale the latter part of this week to make her future home here with her father, James BATTEN. DIED- The death last week of John M. STEVENS of Calumet was a great shock to many of his friends and relatives. The mourners left by his death were Mr and Mrs James STEVENS; Messers (?) James; Arthur and William STEVENS; Miss Ruth Stevens; Capt and Mrs Nicholas CLEMO; Charles CLEMO; Mrs Charles LITTLE; Fred MARTIN; Mrs WIlliam CROCKER; Miss Sarah BENNETTS; James CHENHALL; Mr and Mrs Robert RICKARD; amd Mr and Mrs WIlliam RICKARD. The pallbearers were Thomas CROTHERS; Thomas VIAL; Thomas FREEMAN; James JAMES; William RICKARD and Charles GRANVILLE. DIED- The funeral of the late Mrs Henry LOREY of Calumet will take place from the Calumet Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. Two daughters from New York and a sister from North Dakota will attend the funeral. NEWS ITEM- Thomas GRAHAM of Calumet has gone to Portland, Oregon where he will locate permanently. NEWS ITEM- Mrs. William J. CONDON of Tamarack and their daughter and Mrs Arthur HARRIS of Lake Linden leave early next month to visit CORNWALL, ENGLAND to see relatives and friends for a few months. DIED- The remains of the late Rheinhold SIBILLSKY will be buried this afternoon from the German Lutheran Church in Claumet. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. DIED- The funeral of the late Frank OGINEN, aged 50 years, of Mohawk Location, who died Sunday, was held Tuesday from the Mohawk Finnish Church. Burial was at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. He died of appendicitis which turned into peritonitis. He leaves a wife and one sone. He lived in Mohawk for several years, coming here from the lower end of Houghton County. 1906 May 15 Tuesday YESTERDAY MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY H OUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Joseph KLEMENO and Annie KLOBUCHAR, both of Calumet. DIED- August BRYNTESON, died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Hancock, yesterday morning from excesive use of alcohol. He lived in Calumet for 13 years. He was sent to the Calumet jail for being drunk and was sent to the hospital where he died. He has a brother, Benjamin, in Ishpeming, Marquette County. Burial at Lakeside Cemetery, Tuesday. NEWS ITEM- Ernest TRESTRAIL has arrived in Calumet from CORNWALL, ENGLAND and expects to stay here permanently. 1906 May 16 Wednesday DIED-The funeral of the late John HOPALA, who died at the home of his sister in Coburntown on Sunday, was held yesterday afternoon at the residence, by the pastor of the Hancock Finnish Lutheran Church. He was buried at Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Norman GUNDERSON, aged 20 years, died yesterday morning at the home of his parents in Calumet of tuberculosis after 6 months illness. He was in the employ of the Olson furniture store in Calumet till he was taken sick. He is survived by his parents and three brothers-George; Arthur and Elliot. The funeral will be Friday from the Calumet Norwegian Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Word was received in Houghton that James E. BLANDY, aged 68 years, died of pneumonia at his home in Riverside, California. He was one of the pioneers of the copper country. He was born 1837 September 7 at Newark, Delaware. He came to the Copper Country in 1856 and was in the merchandise business for 4 years. He than became clerk of the old Pewabic mine for 7 years. He devoted most of his time to administration of the Richard EDWARDS estate. He married in New York City 1865 April 25 to Miss Eliza A. EDWARDS, daughter of Capt. Richard EDWARDS. Mrs BLANDY died last summer, leaving a daughter, Sally E., also deceased. 1906 May 17 Thursday NEWS ITEM- Captain Richard COCKING and his family left Painesdale for New Jersey where they will make their home in the future. He worked here for the Champion Mining Company at Painesdale. He has a lucrative position in New Jersey. DIED- The funeral of Arthur TRUDGEON, aged about 20 years, will take place from the Trimountain Methodist Church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. He came here three weeks ago, with his brother William, from CORNWALL, ENGLAND where he was born. He took sick of spinal meningitis of which he died after a few days illness. He leaves William and a sister. YESTERDAY- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Frank STIMAC and Julia YOKOVUC, both of Calumet. Wilfred GALARNEAU, and Agnes GADOURY, both of Lake Linden. 1906 May 18 Friday- YESTERDAY- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William WITTANEN and Sophia BASTO of Calumet. Albert Charles SINCOCK and Annie MERRITT of Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Mrs James GUGGIN and daughter, Mrs John KAISER and granddaughter, Miss Pearl O'NEIL, left Houghton Wednesday for Seattle, Washington to join Mr. GUGGIN and Mr. KAISER, who have located in that city. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs Henry THOMAS of Painesdale have left for Arizona where they will take up residence. NEWS ITEM- James ELLIS and John CRAZE left South Range Wednesday evening to go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND where they will visit relatives for a few months. DIED- Edward FOSTER, aged about 75 years, died at his home at the Franklin location yesterday morning. He was born in Devonshire, England. He had been a resident of Houghton County for the past 33 years; 30 of which had been at Franklin. He is survived by eight children- Fred and Mrs CLEMO, both of Greenland, Ontonagon County; Charles in the West; Mrs BENNETTS; Mrs William EADE, Mrs WILLS, Arthur and George all 5 of Franklin. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at the family home. Burial will be at the old Hancock Cemetery. NEWS ITEM- Miss Mary THOMAS left Calumet for Buckley, Washington, where she will make her future home. NEWS ITEM- John CAMERON of Calumet has left for Wardner, Idaho where he has secured a lucrative position. NEWS ITEM- Miss Jane TRIGG has left Calumet for Wardner, Idaho to visit relatives and probably make her home there. 1906 May 19 Saturday DIED- Ulrich WALDEMEYER, aged 47 years, of Lake Linden, died in West Baden, Indiana where he went for treatments at the sanatarium and he died there yesterday morning. He was born in Bavaria, Germany. For a number of years he was an employee of the Bosch Brewing Company. He leaves a wife and 4 children; Clara; Valerie; Giscella and Ulrich, all living at home. The body will arrive tomorrow. He will be buried from Holy Rosary Church, Lake Linden on Tuesday. Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM- William EVANS arrived at Hubbell this week from CORNWALL, ENGLAND to make his home with his brother Edward, who resides in this town. He has other brothers in the area. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs Joseph REED will leave Calumet Sunday for CORNWALL, ENGLAND to visit friends and relatives for a few months. 1906 May 20 Sunday DIED- Mrs George ILINICH, aged about 40 years, was found dead by her husband, George, in their home in Calumet, when he came home from work at the Calumet and Hecla Mine and was expecting to be served his breakfast. She is survived by her husband and five children. She will be buried Monday at the Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. 1906 May 22 Tuesday YESTERDAY- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK John UMIK and Mary GIDWSK, both of Calumet. DIED- A message was received in Hancock yesterday stated that John BUCHANAN, aged about 24 years, son of Mr and Mrs Angus BUCHAN of Hancock, died of drowning Sunday while on a fishing trip near West Duluth. The canvas canoe he was in tipped over and he drowned on trying to swim to shore. He had a cramp and sank in the lake. The body was shipped from Duluth, Minnesota and arrived in Hancock Wednesday morning. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the family residence. The burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. DIED- Just as he was about to rise Sunday night to go to supper, Moses TRUDEAU, was stricken with paralysis and died at the Calumet home of his brother, Louis TRUDEAU. He is survived by a wife and daughter who live in Canada and had been Calumet residents for four years. The funeral will take place this morning from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Yesterday afternoon, Mr and Mrs Peter KLASEN and their son, Nicholas; and Mr and Mrs Henry FRECK and two children, both families are from Hubbell; and Mrs George SHINKLE of Lake Linden, all left for Germany. They will visit relatives and friends for a few months. 1906 May 23 Wednesday DIED- Joseph PIEGON, aged 68 years, died at Paradise on Monday night after a short illness. He was single and is survived by two brothers. He came to America two years ago and settled on a farm at Paradise. The funeral will be held Friday morning from Chassell. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE- Wilfred GALARNEAU of Lake Linden married Miss Agnes GADBURY, daughter of Mr and Mrs Mose GADBURY, of Lake Linden at St. Joseph's Church, Lake Linden yesterday morning. The bridesmaid was Miss Bertha Dan CHESTEIN of Calumet. They will live in Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM- Thomas BASTIAN of Wolverine mine location; John PENPRASE of North Tamarack and Capt Arthur WILLIAMS of Wolverine, all left for CORNWALL, ENGLAND where they will visit relatives and friends for a few months. 1906 May 24 Thursday YESTERDAY MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Alfred LECHANCE of Hubbell and Winnifred FLEURY of Mason. MARRIAGE- Alfred LECHANCE of Tamarack City married Miss Winnifred FLEURY, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph FLEURY of Mason on Tuesday evening in the chapel of St. Cecelia's Church in Hubbell. The bride was attended by Miss Rose LACHANCE and the best man was Charles MANCOTTE. DIED- Yesterday Mrs Johanna STACK of Houghton received word of the death of her brother, Thomas QUIRK, aged 32 years, of Lake Linden while he was in Chicago, Illinois due to lung trouble. He was born and brought up in Lake Linden. He leaves two brothers, Michael and Edward both of Lake Linden; Mrs Johanna STANK and Miss Mary QUIRK both of Houghton; Mrs Alex ROUX of Dollar Bay and Mrs M. PLUMADORE of Lower Michigan. The funeral will be held Monday from Holy Rosary Church, Lake Linden. Burial at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- Captain Joseph C. THOMAS, aged 65 years, of the Michigan Mine in Rockland, Ontonagon County, Michigan died in the Laurium hospital yesterday afternoon from a complication of diseases. He had been ill for two weeks. He is survived by a wife, three sons and one daughter. The remains will be shipped to Rockland this morning for burial there. He came to the Copper Country and lived here 50 years. He was first employed at the Old St. Mary's mine on Quincy Hill. He worked as a refiner at the Lake Superior Smelting works for many years and moved to the Dollar Bay smelter, working a total of 28 years at the smeltiers. He leaves his wife and 3 daughters/ Mrs Kate WILDS of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs Charles MATHEWS and Mrs Emma MCCAULEY of Hancock. DIED- August OJALA, aged 26 years, died at his home in Hancock of tuberculosis on Thursday. He had been in this country about 3 years from Finland. He was single and leaves no relatives to mourn him. CURTIS, secretary of the Camborne Mining Company, will leave Calumet today for the company's property in British Columbia, Canada to make his home there at the mine. 1906 May 29 Tuesday NEWS ITEM- Two weeks ago the Atlantic Mine was forced to close operations and lay off the miners due to a massive amount of severe air blasts in the mine. They were felt all over Houghton County. The men were told to seek work elsewhere and some found work in other mines in the area and some out of state to go to work. Last Saturday afternoon the surface ground by shaft No. 4 caved in leaving a space 15 feet wide and 40 feet long. Shortly after this another blast caused another cave in almost as big as the first one a short distance from the first one. Standing on the fence surrounding shaft No. 4 the falling ground could be heard quite clearly. After an air blast could be heard, dust and air would pour up thru the shaft. One blast yesterday caused a house near the mine to drop 4 inches. Throughout the mine and on the road leading to the depot in several places large cracks in the ground could be seen. Some are an inch in width. The air blasts were worst yesterday than they had been for some time. DIED- The remains of James PHILLIPS were buried yesterday afternoon at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. She was the widow of the late Charles Andrew HEALEY, who died only last Friday and her son, may have led to her death. She was born in Ireland. She lived in Hancock about 50 years. She, with her husband, went to Detroit, Michigan, three years ago. They returned to Hancock 4 weeks ago from Detroit with the remains of her late son, William who died in Detroit. She is survived by three daughters- Mrs MATHEWS and mrs Eneas MCCAULY, both of Hancock and Mrs Kate WILDE of Detroit. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. DIED- Joseph SCHMITT, aged 86 years, died at his home in Calumet after six weeks illness. He lived for forty years in Calumet and most of the time was an employee of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. He is survived by a wife and seven children. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. DIED- William POLGLAZE, aged 78 years, died at his home at the Atlantic Mine Location, Wednesday morning after his breakfast meal had a heart attack. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and about 42 years ago settled at the Central Mine, Keweenaw County where they operated a boarding house. They moved to the Atlantic Mine 22 years ago where he worked as a miner, until retirement 3 years ago. DIED- Louis ERICKSON, died while walking on Sheldon Street, Houghton from an epiletic fit. He left his doctor's office and died within three minutes after passersbys got to him to aid him. He was the operator of a saloon in Houghton. He operated saloons in Calumet and Laurium at different times. His wife was in Munising, Michigan when he died and was notified at once. He left home and came directly in 1876 to Calumet and stayed there one year, moving to Hancockwhere he worked for Nicholas KUTSCHFIELD and after 3 years there bought the business and kept it until his death. He married Miss Fredericka BERGNER, who was born in Germany, at Calumet on 1876 October 28. DIED- Edward NEIMAN, aged about 20 years, died yesterday afternoon at the Tamarack hospital, as a result of injuries he received yesterday morning at the Osceola mine. He was sitting in the ladderway of the 40th level and a descending skip struck a gate at the level above and it fell on him causing injuries. The funeral will be from his home tomorrow. They will live in Lake Linden. 1906 June 7 Thursday NEWS ITEM- Mrs Joseph DIETLER and children left Houghton for Butte, Montana to join Mr DIETLER to set up a home there. DIED- James MCDONELL, aged 71 years, died at his home in Ripley yesterday morning after a week's illness. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland 1832 June 18 and came to America in 1842, with his parents , settling in New York. He received his education there and was married 1862 July 5 there. He served two years in the US Navy, where he learned to be a machinist and came to Hancock in 1871 and took a position as formane at the Portage Lake Foundry in Ripley. He retired from there after 25 years of work and his age forced him to retire. He is survived by his wife and 9 children- Mrs W. K. RYAN; Mary; Robertt and William MCDONELL, all 4 of Hancock; Joseph and James of Anaconda, Montana; Mrs Peter CAESAR of Calumet; Roseanna of Chicago, Illinois; and Frank of Montpelier, Vermont. LESTER who has a blacksmith business in Ontonagon. She is survived by her husband, six children- the Misses Mettie and May LESTER are both trained nurses. DIED- Mrs William TREGONING, aged about 38 years, died yesterday morning at her home in the Atlantic Mine Location of a tumor. DIED- Mrs Frank BAWDEN, aged about 60 years, wife of Sheriff Frank BAWDEN of Keweenaw County, died yesterday afternoon at her home in Eagle River. She is survived by her husband and five children. The funeral will be tomorrow from the family residence and burial will be at Eagle River Cemetery. DIED- Gavid S. KENDALL, aged 77 years, a pioneer of Hancock, died at his home yesterday afternoon after a lengthy illness. The remains will be shipped to New York City for burial. He was born in New York City 1828 October 15 and received a mercantile education there. He came to Hancock in 1859 and formed a partnership with Mr MATHEWS in the mercantile business, which broke up in 1861. He worked for Mr James A. CLOSE until his death in the mercantile business. He is survived by an unmarried sister, Miss Phoebe KENDALL of East Orange, New Jersey and a brother - in Brooklyn and two married sisters in New York City. They were shoveling on the 62nd level when the cable to the skip broke falling down on the two men, killing them instantly. They are both single. She was born in Dodgeville, Wisconsin and was married to William CHAPPELL. They made their home in Hancock for a number of years as he worked at the old smelting works. They went to the Black Hills, South Dakota and then to Baraga, Baraga County, Michigan where she married Mr GREENLEAF. Her remains are being shipped to Baraga for burial at the L'Anse Cemetery this afternoon. DIED- Mrs Peter JUNTTI, aged 31 years, died at her home in West Hancock, yesterday morning. WEBER. 1906 June 29 Friday DIED- The funeral of the late James HATHNENCE of Painesdale, will be held this morning from his residence. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. He died on Wednesday of consumption. Some time ago he resided and worked in Africa. He spent a number of years in Painesdale as a miner in the mine. He leaves a wife who resides here. DIED- Mrs James TRATHEN of Lake Linden has received word of the death of her brother, John R. TRESIDDER, aged about 60 years, an attorney in New York City. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to America 35 years ago. For a short time he lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then went to Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County, Michigan, where he spent a few years at age 14 at the old Cliff Mine when the mine had 1000 workers and the greatest mine in the Lake Superior region. He graduated from university at Ann Arbor, Michigan. He leaves three sisters and one brother to mourn him-Mrs James TRATHEN; Miss Carrie TRESIDDER and Mrs Robert BANNING, both of Denver, Colorado; and Thomas TRESIDDER of Seattle, Washington.
