He leaves a wife and son, Richard Jr. YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Joseph OZANICH and Miss Mary OZANICH of Trimountain. MARRIAGE- George G. GOUDG of Hancock married Miss Ellen BORLACE, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. BORLACE, of the Pewabic mine location, at the home of the bride's parents on New Years night. The bride was attended by Jeannette TREWITHY of Calumet and William T. HUGO of Calumet supported the groom. They will reside in West Hancock. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs James PRINN of New York arrived in Calumet yesterday and will make their future home here. She met her brother, Richard TUCKER of Calumet. NEWS ITEM-Theodore LENTZ of Hubbell left yesterday for Neenah, Wisconsin where he goes to accept a postition with a telephone company. DIED- Jacob NICKELS, aged 72 years, died Sunday afternoon at his home one a half miles from South Range. He died of cancer. He was born in Switzerland coming to America as a young child and had been a resident in this area for 15 years. The funeral will take place this afternoon at the Atlantic Catholic Church. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1906 January 4 Thursday- NEW ITEM- Walter BRAY and John SHEA of Laurium, have left for Portland, where they will make their future homes. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs John KARR, formerly of Hubbell, but the past two years at Port Huron, Michigan, arrived at Hubbell yesterday. They came here to make their future home at Point Mills. NEWS ITEM-John BISCHOPP married Mrs. Flora KROLL-PRINCE, both of Houghton, on Saturday night, at the brides home in East Houghton. 1906 January 5 Friday-- MARRIAGE- Dougall-STEWART of Houghton married Miss Frances May BAILEY, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles A. BAILEY, of Port Huron, Michigan at the home of the bride's parents. They will reside in Florence, Arizona where the groom has accepted a position as chief clerk at the Lake Superior and Arizona Mining Company. MARRIAGE-Dan COONEY married Miss Grace JOHNSON, both of Houghton on Wednesday at Justice Casper BRAND'S court in Houghton. DIED-Miss Louisa FRASER, daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter FRASER of West Houghton, died at the home of her parents on Wednesday morning. The funeral will be held this morning from St. Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- The remains of the late James CHEGWYN, who died at Newberry State Mental Asylum, Michigan, arrived at Hancock last night. He was aged 74 years and born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He came to America about 34 years ago and made his home in Hancock, working at the Pewabic and Franklin mines mainly. He leaves a wife and three daughters. The funeral will be held at the family residence at Quincy this afternoon. Burial will be at the Hancock Protestant cemetery. DIED-Tony SIBILISKY of Eagle River, Keewenaw County, has returned from Algoma, Wisconsin, where he was called by the death of his brother, Henry SIBILISKY, who died in that city having reached the age of 88 years. Henry was for years a resident of Keweenaw County. 1906 January 6 Saturday- NEWS ITEM-Joseph C. WAREHAM who conducted a barber shop in Hancock for many years, with his wife has moved to Denver, Colorado to make their home there. PROBATE MATTER-Marian GLANVILLE was appointed administrator of the estate of her husband, James H. GLANVILLE, deceased. 1906 January 7 Sunday- NEWS ITEM-Joseph WALTERS and Joseph ROLLING of Tamarack, left last week for Massey, Ontario, Canada where they will take positions with the Hernina Mining Company. 1906 January 9 Tuesday- YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Oscar MUSTANEN and Mrs Adelina BERGDAHL of Laurium William J. GOLDSWORTHY and Miss Mildred KENDALL of Baltic. 1906 January 10 Wednesday- DIED-Mrs Mary HARNETT arrived at Butte, Montana from her home in Hancock, having been called there by the death of her sister, Miss Annie DWYER, which occurred on Saturday night. The funeral will be held this afternoon at St Mary's Catholic Church, Butte and burial at the Butte Catholic Cemetery. 1906 January 11 Thursday- NEWS ITEM-Walter BERTRAND left Houghton yesterday for Detroit, Michigan and will take a position in a drug store in that city. MARRIAGE- Frank WAGNER of Hancock married Miss Cecelia THENO, yesterday at Antigo, Wisconsin. They will reside in Hancock. NEWS ITEM-Miss Cora BROWN of St. Paul, Minnesota, arrived in Calumet and will make her home here. 1906 January 12 Friday-DAILY MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM-Miss Maud TRATHEN of Lake Linden went to Hancock to visit her sister, Mrs Fred PENNISTON. YESTERDAY- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Antil HANKOLA and Henna M. JAMPSA of Franklin John JERMAN and Annie TURK of Calumet John SPEHAR and Katie MADRONICH of Calumet 1906 January 13 Saturday- NEWS ITEM-The Misses Emma and Theresa MENGE of L'anse, Baraga County, Michigan are in Houghton visiting their sister, Mrs August SWCHLAACK. DIED-John BORLANI, aged 20 years, born in Austria, of Calumet died here Thursday night of dropsy. He came to America about four months ago from Austria and came to Calumet. He was sick last Monday and taken to the Calumet hospital where he died. He has no relatives in America and will be buried in Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED-William PENBERTHY, aged 59 years, well known in Hancock, died in his home at Chicago, Illinois on Thursday. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs Fred CREIBEL of Chicago and Miss Ada PENBERTHY of California. There are a number of relatives in Hancock. DIED-Three miners are believed missing in the underground area of the Tamarack mine. A fire began there Thursday and the men being inexperienced is probably the reason they are still down in the mine. They are Michael SIMINOVICH; Samuel BOZOVICH and John YACKSA. It is very probable they are dead. The rescue party went down to find them and they were overcome by gas and they are Captain Thomas MASLIN; John ADAMS and a brother of BOZOVICH, they returned and taken to the hospital and will be well. On Tuesday there were still not found and the gas was so bad to make recovery of their bodies impossible. MARRIAGE-Edward J. COLLINS, superintendent of the Wolverine and Arizona Mining Company in Bisbee, Arizona married Miss Edith COOK, in Duluth, Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon., at the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Wills HARGRAVES of Duluth. Miss Sybilla HARTMAN and Miss Julia DUNCAN were bridesmaids. Joseph Williams COOK, a brother of the groom, was the groomsman. They will live in Bisbee. 1906 JANUARY 14 Sunday- DIED-Mrs Charles N. JILBERT, aged 39 years, died at the Calumet and Hecla hospital, yesterday of pneumonia. She was born in Sweden and came to America at the age of 11 years. She is survived by a husband and 4 children. The funeral will be from the Laurium Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED-Miss Charlotte WILLIAMS, aged 22 years, died at her home in the Centennial location after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her parents, 5 sisters and one brother. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the Centennial Methodist church. Burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1906 January 16 Tuesday- YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK John MINKKJNEN and Mary PARTALA of Painesdale. NEWS ITEM-John CAMERON of Houghton left yesterday for Thomasville, Georgia to join his father, John A. CAMERON who went there a week ago to make their home there. 1906 January 17 Wednesday- YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William MILLER and Miss Ida FRAZIER of Hancock Jany 18-Joseph JUGOVITCH of South Range and Mary SPEHAR of Painesdale. DIED-Word was received in Lake Linden that Isreal GLADDEN had died at the Houghton County Poor Farm where he was taken several weeks ago from suffering with a weak mind. He ran a farm at Boot Jack Point for a number of years. He lived a life of a hermit, coming out of the farm only to sell his crops. He was over 70 years old and no known relatives in the area. He will be buried in the Poor Farm cemetery. NEWS ITEM-Yesterday afternoon Mr and Mrs C.A. MCLEAN of Dollar Bay left for Helvetia, ARIZONA where they will remain permanently. He has accepted a position there as manager of the company store at the mine. He was a resident of Dollar Bay for many years, having been manager of the Tamarack-Osceola warehouse. 1906 January 18 Thursday- NEWS ITEM-George BRAND of Houghton leaves today for Battle Creek, Michigan for treatment of Bright's disease. DIED-Elizabeth A. TRENGOVE, aged 83 years, wife of Nathanial TRENGOVE, died at her home in Lake Lindon yesterday noon, after a long illness. She was born in St. BLAZEY, CORNWALL, ENGLAND, in 1823 and in 1858 she, with her husband came to this country. They spent 48 years of their married life in this country. The early part of their residence was in Keweenaw County, with several years at the Phoenix Mine; and the Cliff Mine. Form there they came to Lake Linden and resided there ever since. She leaves a husband and six children-Mrs William SINCOCK of Calumet; Mrs William NICHOLLS of Globe, Arizona; Mrs Thomas SINCOCK of Lake Linden; Richard TRENGROVE of Lake Linden; Damuel TRENGROVE of Martinez, Arizona and Mrs August HAGEN of Lake Linden. The funeral will be from the Lake Linden Methodist church. Burial at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet in the family plot. DIED-The remains of Mrs Damas LAHALE will arrive today in Lake Lindon from Newberry Mental Asuylum, Michigan, where she died last week. The funeral will take place Friday from St. Joseph's church, Lake Linden and the burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE-Mr N.F.Kaiser, Red Jacket village clerk married Miss Lauta MCNAB, daughter of L. MCNAB of Calumet, at Chicago, Illinois. They will reside in Red Jacket. DIED-The remains of the late George DOSEN will be buried today at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. He was a timberman at the Red Jacket shaft and was the victim of an accident in the mine on Tuesday, when he was struck by falling rocks. He is survived by a wife and two children. He came to America 6 months ago. NEWS ITEM- Thomas TREZONA of Calumet has left for Butte, Montana, where he will make his future home. 1906 January 19 Friday-DAILY MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Walter G. MARRIAGE- Frank ODGERS married Miss Henrietta FURNESSE, both of Painesdale, at the church parsonage, yesterday afternoon. The bride was attended by Miss Lottie HEWSON and the groom's best man was his brother, Fred ODGERS. They will reside in Painesdale, as the groom is employed by the Champion Mining Company. NEWS ITEM- Edward YATES of Dollar Bay, who for the past 6 months has been employed by the Lake Superior Smelters, Dollar Bay, resigned his position there and accepted a postition in Hibbing, Minnesota. She was the daughter of John HAVI. She leaves a husband, three small children and her parents. The funeral will take place today from the Atlantic Finnish Church. The burial will take place at the Atlantic cemetery. She had been ill about a week. She was born in County Cork, Ireland and came to America 49 years ago. She first lived at the Cliff Mine, Keweenaw County for 10 years and with her husband moved to Hancock to live ever since. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs GOGGIN and Mrs Catherine MURPHY. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock. 1906 January 28 Sunday- NEWS ITEM- John PEARCE, of Hurontown, has left for Great Falls, Montana to take a position with one of the mining companies there. TWO MARRIAGES AT ATLANTIC CATHOLIC CHURCH-YESTERDAY- Nicholas KROLL married Miss Mary VOUK of Baltic. Both are well known in Baltic and will reside there. Joe OZANICH and Mary OZANICH, both residents of Trimountain, and will live there. DIED-John HURST, aged 66 years, died at his home at Tamarack on Friday of heart failure. He was born in Germany and came to this country many years ago and had been a resident of the Tamarack Mills for a long time. The funeral will be this afternoon from the Hubbell German Church. The burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- Jacob REUTHER, aged 60 years, died yesterday morning at his home in Calumet after a lengthy illness. He was born in Germany, and came to the United States as a boy of seven years. He came to Wisconsin and left in 1860 to go to Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County, then a location of great promise. He worked for some years in Keweenaw County, and then he went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he joined the Union Army in the Civil War. After the war he returned and married Miss Henrietta. He then came to Calumet and worked for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company as a machinist. He finally became foreman in the machine shop. Three children survive him-Mrs. Norman MCLEOD of Calumet, Mrs Joseph MURPHY of Canada and Fred of Ely, Minnesota. The funeral will take place Monday morning from the residence. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE- Milton HEATON married Miss Lillian PASCOE at the home at Red Jacket Shaft on Thursday night. The bridesmaid was Lillian PASCOE and the best man was Walter PASCOE. DIED- Mrs Asarias JARVINEN, aged 25 years, died at her home in Calumet after a short illness. The funeral will take place today from the Calumet Finnish Church. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE- Mathew HILTUNEN married Miss Charlotte LAHTI last night in the Maggie Walls block in Calumet. Rev. Heideman of the Calumet Finnish Church performed the ceremony. MARRIAGE- Alfred LANJEN married Miss Hannah WUOBIA last night at the home of the groom's parents at Raymbaultown by Rev Heideman of the Calumet Finnish Church. 1906 January 30 Tuesday-DAILY MINING GAZETTE, HOUGTON, MICHIGAN DIED- John KUPARI, aged about 20 years, died at a lumber camp after a short illness. He was only in the country about 6 months from Finland and has no friends or relatives here. He will be buried at Lake View Cemetery today. DIED- Mrs Jacob BLAZER, aged 36 years, will be buried at Eagle Harbor Cemetery, Keweenaw County tomorrow. She died at the Red Jacket Hospital Sunday night. Her home was at the Delaware Mine location, Keweenaw County and was brought to Calumet for treatment. DIED- The funeral of Mrs. William H. PAULL took place yesterday afternoon from the Osceola Methodist church. The remains were shipped to Breckenridge, Missouri for burial. She died Sunday night at the Tamarack Hospital of typhoid fever. She was 24 years old. 1906 January 31 Wednesday- YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK John HILTUNEN and Minnie PYKKONEN of Wolverine Mine. DIED- Yesterday morning the funeral of the late Con O'NEIL took place from the Dollar Bay St. Francis church. The employee of the Lake Superior Smelter marched in a body to the church, he was a foreman there. Burial was at Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton. He left a wife and five children. DIED-Andrew BURGE, a young man of the Delaware Mine location, Keweenaw County was found dead yesterday in the woods near the mine. The body was brought to Calumet yesterday. Coronor William E. SMITH of Eagle River, Keweenaw County was notified and he will impanel a coroner's jury to determine cause of death. MARRIAGE- Clement J. SHERIDAN married Miss Mary E. HEALY, both of Calumet, at Butte, Montana last night. They lived in Butte three weeks before the marriage. DIED-The funeral of the late William SILENEN of Centennial Heights will take place this afternoon from the Calumet Finnish Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. Death took place Monday from consumption. He leaves a wife and family 1906 February 1 Thursday- DIED-John LAURI, aged 31 years, died in the Houghton County jail where he has been confined the past couple of days. He was brought from Calumet jail to the Houghton jail so that the County doctors could treat him for heart disease, which killed him. He leaves a wife and child and has not been living with them for some time. He will be buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton, at this brother's expense, he lives in Calumet. 1906 February 2 Friday- DIED-James R. COOPER, aged 77 years, died at his home in the Quincy addition last night. He was born in New York State in 1829 and came to Michigan at age 4 years old. After living in Oakland County for several years, he went to Detroit, Michigan for a number of years. He came to the Copper Country and in 1867 and became manager of the Lake Superior and Detroit Smelting Company, a position he held for many years. He built the Quincy smelterd and and managed that for five years and then retired to private life. He is survived by a wife and two sons-James R. of Lake Linden and Claude of Hancock; two daughters-Miss Gracein, Detroit, Michigan and Miss Virginia of Cleveland, Ohio. The funeral will be conducted from his home on Monday afternoon. The body will be taken to Detroit, Michigan for burial. DIED- Mrs. Jane ROWE, aged 62 years, died at the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. Wm H. COLLINS and North Kearsarge. She lived in this area 20 years, coming from CORNWALL, ENGLAND where she was born.. She leaves a husband, daughter; 2 step-sons; one is Henry, and 2 step-daughters. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at the home. The burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Calumet. 1906 February 3 Saturday- DIED-William H. HARRIS, aged 46 years, died at the Hancock family residence, yesterday afternoon of cirrhosis of the liver. He was born in Houghton 1860 April 13 and went to the public schools here. As a young man he entered the firm of SMITH and Harris, as an accountant, of which his father was the junior partner. He worked as an accountant at L. HEASON and Sons for several years and at other companies. At Hodge Iron Works became superintendent and worked there 21 years. He took a position with Portage Lake Foundry till 1906 when he left due to his illness. He leaves a wife and 3 sisters. The funeral will be held tomorrow from his home. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED-Napoleon BERTRAND, aged 61 years., of West Hancock died last night at St. Joseph's Hospital of inflammation of the bowels, brought on by injuries at work in the woods near L'anse, Baraga County. He was struck by a limb of a tree. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Miss Allie of Walker, Minnesota. He has been a resident of Hancock for two years. The funeral will be from his home tomorrow. DIED-August CARLSON, a miner working underground in the Red Jacket shaft of the mine was killed yesterday morning by a piece of falling rock due to a premature explosion. He was hurried to the Calumet and Hecla hospital and died there at once. He lived in Yellow Jacket and is survived by a wife and three children. The funeral will be tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. Two of his brother's Peter and Joseph CARLSON of Chicago will attend the funeral. NEWS ITEM-John DELL'OSSO has left for his former home in Italy to stay there as he found it more attractive than Calumet after his last visit there. 1906 February 7 Wednesday- DIED-Ernest HECHT has returned to his home in Laurium from Superior, Wisconsin where he went to attend the funeral of Patrick C. KELLY, who died there last Friday of appendicitis. The funeral took place on Monday. Mr KELLY was quite well known in Houghton County having been employed at one time at the Arlington Hotel and later at the Northwestern Hotel in Hancock, He went to Superior about one month ago and secured the position of clerk in the Superior shipyards. He is survived my three sisters and three brothers. DIED-Mrs John FLOYD died yesterday afternoon at her home in Painesdale after an illness of three days, due to eciamisia. The young woman lived in Painesdale a few years and leaves a husband and an infant girl. The funeral will be tomorrow afternoon at the Painesdale Methodist Church. He was born in Wicklow, Ireland 1834 August 15 and came to America when 14 years old, settling in Wisconsin till 1852. He then came to the Lake Superior Region to the old Michigan Mine in Ontonagon County till 1862 when he came to Houghton County locating at the Quincy mine till 1868 when he moved to Marquette. He married Miss Katherine HAGAN in 1858 at Rockland, Ontonagon County. His wife died in Marquette in 1888. He is survived by three sons-James of California; Daniel of Spokane, Washington and Barthloemew of Duluth, Minnesota also one daughter, Mrs. O'DONNELL. DANIELL superintendent of the mine to the family and suicide was implied. He was a graduate of the Michigan College of Mining at Houghton. He had left last Thursday night for Massey to his new job. He had sent one letter to his parents and it sounded as if he was well. The remains will be shipped back to Calumet and the funeral will take place Friday afternoon at the Red Jacket Congregational Church. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery. They will make their home in Greenland. 1906 February 24 Saturday- DIED-George WILSON, aged 79 years, died at this home in Laurium from pneumonia. He came to America from Yorkshire, England in the early 1850's to New York staying there a short time. He lived in Detroit, Michigan a short time and then came to Ontonagon County then to Keweenaw County and remained there till 18 years ago. He came to Laurium and lived there ever since. DIED-Richard ROWE, aged 40 years, committed suicide yesterday afternoon by drowning himself in the Calumet dam. William TEDDY and William JEWEL were two men who noticed Mr ROWE near the water and saw him leap into the dam. He had been employed as a miner at the Centennial Mine, and yesterday came to the surface of the mine before his shift was over and talking to no one walked away. He is survived by several brothers who are at a loss for his action. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the home of John ROWE, one of the brothers of the deceased. He will be buried in Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. 1906 February 27 Tuesday- DIED-The funeral of John CHILUNDER, the woodsman who died of injuries last Thursday, while at work at Hall's camp, near Elm River, were held at the Finnihs Lutheran Free Church at Hancock. BARNES, single, about 26 years old, was accidentally caught between two railroad cars in the South Shore Range yards in Houghton, last week. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital Hancock and died of his injuries yesterday. He lived in Hancock most of his life. He is survived by several brothers. His mother died last November.
