She was born in Canada and came to America when she was a young woman, and has been in Lake Linden the past 33 years. She is survived by her husband and six children- Mrs. Ed FILLTON of Dollar Bay; Mrs. Dolphis BRAULT and Mrs. Rose GREGORY, both of Lake Linden; Mrs. E. R. YOUNG of Iowa; Napoleon GREGORY of Richmond, Virginia; and Adolphus of Lake Linden. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from St Joseph's church, Lake Linden. Burial will at Mount Calvary, Lake Linden. DIED- Nelson O. KING, a young man of Tamarack city, died yesterday afternoon at the hospital of appendicitis. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon from St Cecelia's Catholic Church, Hubbell. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM- Thomas ELLIS; Roland WHITE; John MAY and Stephen QUICK, all of Calumet have gone to Lowersburg, Arizona where they will make their future homes. NEWS ITEM-Edwin HICKS of Calumet has gone to Bisbee, Arizona, where he expects to make his future home. He has been a resident of this district for a number of years and expects that the Arizona country will be good for his health. 1905 November 4 Saturday YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Oliver DUTEAU and Selina BEAUCHAMP of Calumet William JOHNS and Sarah BICE of Trimountain John MEYER and Emma GURNACK of Calumet NEWS ITEM- Charles BARTILINY of Baltic mine location will leave today for Turino, Italy where he will make his future home. 1905 November 5 Sunday NEWS ITEM- Thomas MERRITT, a miner in the Champion mine had his hand badly smashed when he went to pick up a wrench and did not see a machine come down in the same spot. He was taken to a doctor at once. MARRIAGE- Ludger TELLER of Dollar Bay married Miss Emily DUPREAU of Calumet, at the home of the bride's parents in Calumet. They will reside in Dollar Bay. 1905 November 7 Tuesday DIED -Mrs. Mary BERRYMAN, aged 84 years, died at her home at Quincy on Saturday of old age. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and was one of the oldest residents on Quincy hill. She came to the copper country 35 years ago and spent most of the time in Hancock. She is survived by 9 children- William; James; Thomas all of Calumet; John of Quincy and 5 daughters living in CORNWALL. The funeral will be today from the Hancock Methodist church. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- Henry ESPLAIN's infant son died Sunday of scarlet fever. The funeral was from the residence. Burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- The body of the late Edward KOHLHAAS arrived in Calumet from Gold Creek, Montana, at which place he had died. It is felt that he had apoplexy while on a scow after closing up his placer mining area. He fell over the side into the river and drowned. The funeral will take place from the family Calumet residence this afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. His brother, Joseph G. KOHLH AAS, accompanied the body to Calumet. DIED- Thomas C. CAPPEL, aged 77 years, died at his home in T. and O. Mills location Sunday morning after a brief illness due to pneumonia. He was born in CAMBORNE, CORNWALL, ENGLA ND 1828 June 6. Forty-nine years he ago he married Miss Marion DUNSTONE at TUCKINGMILL, CORNWALL, ENGLAND. In 1850 he was employed at NAYLORS, OXLEY AND CO. for a 3 year contract and went around Cape Horn Africa to the mining district of Cerro de Pasco in the Andes mountians of Peru, about 13,400 feet above sea level. He went there to superintend the erection of mining machinery. Upon his return to CORNWALL he worked in different mines there. In 1871 he signed a 3-year contract and went to Mexico to superintend the erection of machinery for the Maxwell Land and Railway Company. On his return he went to Birmingham and was employed by the Tangye Brothers for a few years at the largest engine building works in England, as a master mechanic. In the 1870's he came to America to Linden, Wisconsin and from there to Rockland, Ontonagon County, Michigan. He also worked in Keweenaw County at the Delaware and Lac La Belle mines. He went to the Huron mine 9 miles from Houghton. His final job was at the T. and 0. Mills location where he lived and worked till his death. He leaves a widow, Mirian E. and 5 children- Charles and Ernest of the T. and 0- mills; John and William, both of Point Mill and Mrs. Thomas EDWARD of Mills. The funeral was from Trinity Episcopal Church, Houghton today. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. The pallbearers were all from his Masonic lodge- Samuel JAMES: James JEWELL; Harry T. DUNSTONE; William PASCOE; Richard HAWK and William DUNSTONE. MARRIAGE- Fred GROSE of Kearsarge and Miss Lillian DANIELL were married Saturday night at Kearsarge mine location. NEWS ITEM- George A. ROWE, a one-time newspaper reporter in the copper country, is now located in Denver, Colorado, doing newspaper work in that city. YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Joseph H. RULE and Miss Emma SMEETH of Painesdale 1905 November 8 Wednesday MARRIAGE- William JOHNS of Trimountain married Miss Clara BICE, daughter of Mr and Mrs. James BLACKWELL, at the home of the bride's parents in Trimountain, last Saturday evening. James JOHNS, brother of the groom, was the best man; and Miss MICHELL of Trimountain attended the bride. They will live in Trimountain. DIED- Martin SOLETA aged 35 years, a stranger who died at St Joseph's hospital on Monday morning, his funeral was held yesterday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev T. J. ATFIELD; burial was at the Old cemetery, Hancock. A friend who crossed the ocean with him told the authorities his age and that he had a wife and two children in Austria. DIED -James CORNELIUS, aged 49 years, supervisor of Schoolcraft Township, died at his Lake Linden home yesterday morning from a heart condition. He had to quit his job as a carpenter at the Calumet and Hecla mill due to illness. He was born in Dodgeville. Wisconsin 1856 August 19. His parents, Samuel J. CORNELIUS and Mary PENBERTHY, were born in REDRUTH, CORNWALL, ENGLAND. Twenty years ago he came to Lake Linden from Wisconsin and lived here till his death. He leaves a widow, daughter and his mother, aged 82 years old. He leaves two sisters- Mrs. William DAVEY; Mrs. William McILROYE and a brother Charles, all of Seattle, Washington. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the Lake Linden Methodist church. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- Mrs. Elizabeth PEARCE of Mills, aged 74 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. CHAPPEL of Mills, yesterday morning. She was born in GOLDOPHIN, CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1831. In 1854 she married John H. PEARCE and when they came to America they settled in Connecticut for a short time, then they went to Pottsville, Pennsylvania for 3 years, than they came West and came to Hancock in 1861. After a short time they moved to Houghton, which was in its infancy and very rough living. The husband started a hotel business in Houghton and later bought a home in Hurontown and lived there permanently. Mr PEARCE died 24 years ago last June and the widow lived in that home till 2 years ago, when the widow had a paralytic stroke and after a time was moved to her daughter's home in Mills. The funeral will be held tomorrow from Grace Methodist church, Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. The funeral was conducted from the home and burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE- Joseph H. PANTERA married Miss Nina BRISSON, both residents of Franklin mine location yesterday morning at St Patrick's Catholic church, Hancock. The bride was attended by Miss Lizzie DOWNEY of Hancock and the best man was Michael McCARTHY. They will reside at the Franklin location. DIED- The funeral of the late Robert RATU, who died at his home in Hancock yesterday morning, will be held this afternoon with services at the Hancock Finnish Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lakeview cemetery, Hancock. He had been in this country from Finland only six weeks. DIED- Mrs. Frank VALLIERE, aged 62 years, died at her home in Calumet on Wednesday night after a long illness. She was one of the copper country earliest pioneers from Canada where she was born. She came here in 1872 to Calumet and lived here ever since. She is survived by her husband and two children, Mrs. A. T. La BERGE and William LaBERGE. The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon from St Anne's church, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM-John GRONHOLM has left Calumet for Astoria, Oregon where he will make his future home. 1905 November 11 Saturday MARRIAGE- Adam SHARP married Miss Agnes WILSON, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. BLACKWOOD, of Calumet, last night. He is survived by a family in Austria, his birthplace. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the Calumet Austrian church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Mrs. Jeremiah LEARY, died yesterday morning at her Laurium home after an illness of a few days, due to inflammation of the stomach. She was one of the oldest residents of the copper country, coming here from County Cork, Ireland, her birthplace, about 40 years ago. She made her home in Hancock at first, than she moved to the Allouez mine location, Keweenaw County. Eighteen years ago she moved to her Laurium home where she lived till her death. She is survived by a husband and seven children- Misses Annie; Mary B; Catherine; Margaret; Jennie; Lizzie and John B. LEARY. Margaret and Jennie are living at the present time in Los Angeles, California. She will be buried from Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet on tomorrow morning. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- George RODGERS of North Tamarack will leave this week for Massey, Ontario, Canada where he has secured a position in the blacksmith shop of the Hermina Mining company. NEWS ITEM - William EDDY of Gartle, North Dakota is visiting with his parents in Laurium for a short time. DIED-The funeral of the late Edward DEEBLE, single, was held yesterday morning. who died in Greenland, Ontonagon County, Michigan on Sunday from heart disease., was held at the family home at that pace. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He was the son of William DEEBLE and he formerly lived in Hurontown. 1905 November 16 Thursday NEWS ITEM- John H. NOBLE has resigned his position with Paul P. R. Roehm, he will leave at noon from Calumet for Woodburn, North Dakota, where he will make his future home. MARRIAGE-Dr William JACKSON of Houghton married Miss Blanche HAMBITZER, daughter of Mr. Joseph F. HAMBITZER, at the Houghton home of the bride's father yesterday afternoon. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Mabel HAMBITZER and the groom's best man was Lieutenant Thomas H. JACKSON. THIBAULT, died Sunday morning at his home in Lake Linden of pneumonia. He was born in St Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. Two years ago he and his wife and children migrated to America and came directly to Lake Linden. He conducted a harness shop in Lake Linden. Five sons mourn him- O. A. Thibault of Montreal, Canada; Ernest of Dollar Bay; Archille of Pangus, Massachussetts; O. D. Thibault of Yale Washington and O. E. Thibault of Quincy Mine, Hancock. The funeral will take place this morning from St. Joseph's church, Lake Linden. Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. Four weeks ago his wife died in Lake Linden. DIED- Mrs. Britta STENMOE, aged 84 years, died at her home in Calumet on Sunday afternoon. She was one of the early residents of the copper country, coming here in 1868 from Norway. She was born in 1820 in Sweden, and went to Norway when she was 7 years old. She is survived by five children- Ole of Randall, Iowa; Michael of Elsworth, Iowa ; Simon , No 5 Shaft Tamarack mine; John of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. MICHAELSON of Calumet. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Calumet Norwegian church. MARRIED-Alex LeMARE married Miss Anna La BLANC at St Frances church, Dollar Bay on Monday morning. Mrs. Mary McLAUGHLIN was the bridesmaid and the best man was Robert BEAUDETTE, brother of the bride. They will reside in Dollar Bay. DIED- The funeral of the late Jonas UDELL, aged about 50 years, who died at his home in Baraga, Baraga County, Michigan, was held on November 11 from the Baraga Lutheran Finnish church. He is survived by a wife and three children. His wife and two children are in Finland and the 3rd. a son is in Ironwood, Michigan. DIED- James FAUCETT, aged 80 years, died at the home of his son, W.H.ROBERTS of Calumet yesterday of old age. He was born in Ireland in 1825 and came to America in 1849 and in 1852 worked at the Cliff mine, Keweenaw County and turned to farming on the Eagle River and worked at that till 12 years ago till he went to live with his son. He leaves 4 children- Robert C. of Laurium; W. H.; Mrs. KENNY of Houghton and Mrs. RILEY of Butte, Montana. Funeral will be from his son's home and burial at Eagle River cemetery, Keweenaw county. MARRIAGE- John RASTELLO married Miss Margaret CROWLEY yesterday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet. Miss Anna CROWLEY, a niece of the bride was the bridesmaid. Bert FORRESTER was the best man. They will reside in Butte, Montana. 1905 November 23 Thursday YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William J. KEVERN and Miss Ada BOWDEN, both of Houghton MARRIAGE- David PEKCHAN married Miss Clotilda CHARTRAND, both of Ripley, at St Joseph's Catholic church, Hancock on Tuesday morning. George CHARTRAND, Brother of the bride, supported the groom and Miss Jennie DEMARS was the bridesmaid DIED- Mrs. William C. LANGDON, died last night at her home in Ripley of typhoid fever. She is survived by her husband, children, her father, Peter NEY of Hancock; two brothers Nicholas NEY of Ashland; NEY, and a sister, Mrs Anton COOK, both of Hancock. The funeral will be at St Patrick's Catholic church, Hancock on Saturday. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DIED- The remains of the late Robert LINBACK, aged 50 years, were laid to rest at the Atlantic cemetery, Tuesday morning. The funeral took place from the Atlantic Finnish church. He died Sunday morning due to heart failure. He had been a resident of Atlantic for 25 years. He resided on a farm about a mile from town. He leaves a wife and six children, four boys and two girls. NEWS ITEM- Richard HARRIS, a miner at the Atlantic mine, received injuries in the mine Tuesday morning. He was carrying some drills and slipped to the floor injuring his ribs and broke one rib. DIED- The body of Patrick FLAHERTY was brought to Calumet from Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, Michigan and was taken to Lake View cemetery, Calumet and buried there. He had relatives in Calumet and they wanted him buried here. He was a victim of an accidental drowning. While trying to take a short cut from work to his home he ice skated across the lake and hit a weak spot in the ice and fell into the lake and drowned. He was about 45 years old. DIED- Mrs. Jerry SHANAHAN, aged 75 years, died at her home in Calumet yesterday afternoon after a two weeks illness. She is survived by five children. She was one of the copper country's earliest settlers. The funeral will be from Sacred Heart church, Calumet on Saturday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE- Oliver DUTEAU married Miss Celina BEAUCHAMP last night at St Anne's church, Calumet. 1905 November 24 Friday DIED- Mrs. Oscar RANVELE, aged 46 years, died yesterday afternoon after a long illness at her home in Houghton. She leaves 5 children-- Ernest; Jennie; Ida; Carmaline and Mena. Also she leaves a brother-Henry SALORE of North Adamas, Massachussetts .The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at St Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. NEWS ITEM- Miss Olive BUZZO of Calumet has gone to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she will be treated for eye problems. Her mother accompanied her. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND on 1843 February 15, came to America as a young woman. She resided at the Quincy location the past 20 years. She leaves her husband, son Frank; daughter Ullie, who both lived at the Quincy location. Also three brothers in Bristol, ENGLAND and a sister in CORNWALL. The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon from Pewabic Methodist church. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED the funeral of the late Mrs. Henry KAISER, of Hubbell, who died Tuesday night at her home, takes place from the German Lutheran church, Hubbell today. The burial will be at the old cemetery, Hancock. She was born in Germany 1828 February 12. She came to this country when a young woman. She is survived by her husband and three sons- Fred MEHRING of Redridge; William MEHRING and Charles MEHRING, both of Hubbell. DIED- James W. HOCKING Sr., aged 64 years, a resident of the copper country for 31 years, died at his home yesterday morning in Houghton after a long illness. He was born in PINGEON, CAMBORNE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND 1841 April 22. He came to this country, settling in Hancock in 1862 and two years later returned to CORNWALL. He was married in CORNWALL to Ellen HEARN of TRURO, CORNWALL, after which he returned here to take up his residence again. He leaves a wife, and five children- Mrs. Alfred GREGOR of Trimountain; Mrs. George TRIM of Houghton; Mrs. Albert LUKE of Hancock; Miss Louise HOCKING and James HOCKING, both of Houghton. He leaves two brothers- Joseph of Boulder, Colorado and John HOSKING of Houghton. The funeral services will be held at Grace Methodist church, Houghton on Sunday afternoon. He worked for some time for the Houghton County Street Railway company and then moved to the Portage Lake Gas and Coke company till he retired due to illness. He leaves a wife and a son, John of Ashland, Wisconsin, also 3 sisters- Mrs WILSON and Mrs McCAULEY both of Calumet and Mrs J. J. WEBB of Hancock. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the residence. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- The funeral of the late Herman RALSANEN of Baltic mine who died in St Joseph's Hospital, Hancock on Wednesday afternoon, was held yesterday afternoon from t he Finnish church in Hancock. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. He spent 4 months in the Baltic mine coming here from the iron mine country. He has lived in this country for 4 Years. He leaves a sister who lives at Baltic and a mother and brother who live in Finland. DIED- Mrs Theresa STETTER, aged 65 years, died at her home in Hubbell yesterday morning after a year long illness. She was born in Berlin, Germany and came to this country when a young woman. Forty-five years ago she came to the copper country and when she came, she lived two years at the Cliff mine in Keweenaw County. From there, with her husband, they spent 3 years at the Quincy mine., then going to Hurontown and after that to Detroit, Michigan. After a short time at Detroit they moved to the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County for 18 years. She was an old settler in Hubbell and when she and her husband went there it was a much smaller town than now. Her husband died 4 years ago. She is survived by 10 children- John of Laurium; Nonce and Frank both of Dollar Bay; Peter of Lake Linden; Joseph of Hubbell; Mrs Thomas PEARCE and Mrs Fred SHLEETER, both of Lake Linden ; Mrs Jacob SCHO, Mrs John REDING and Miss Elizabeth at home, all 3 of Hubbell. DIED- Carlos SUFANCIC who was injured Friday morning in a mine accident at the Tamarack mine, died that night of his injuries. He was a timber man in the mine when a rock struck him and caused his injury. He was about 46 years old and married. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the Austrian church, Calumet. DIED- Zachariah JACQUES. aged 72 years, died at Dollar Bay by a train while walking along the tracks. He was born at St. Bartholemew, Canada 1833 February 23 and came to Lake Superior in June 1857. He was the first carpenter foreman hired by Ransom SHELDON for whom he worked till 1868. He then went to Detroit and Lake Superior Smelting Company at Hancock as surface foreman. He worked there till 1904 when he moved to Dollar Bay and worked at the smelting works. He was married in 1859 to Miss Clara O'NEIL of Sorel, Canada. He is survived by his wife and seven children-Mrs Charles O. Olivier of Hancock; Sister Emannuela, a nun of St. Louis Missouri, Emery C. Jacques of Cerra de Pasco, of Peru, South America, Arthur F. of Dollar Bay, Rev. R. J. Jacques of Iron Mountain, Michigan, Mrs Laurentia Harmon of Dollar Bay. He was born in Ireland and came to this country when a young man. Thirty years ago he came to Lake Linden and Mrs QUIRK died 20 years ago. After his wife's death in Lake Linden his daughter, Miss Mary QUIRK, kept house for him. Three weeks ago he went to Houghton to spend the next few months with Mrs STACK. He came from Toronto, Ontario, Canada where his father and several brothers live. He leaves a wife and little daughter. The body will be shipped to Toronto for burial. 1905 Dec 13 Wednesday DIED-A message was received in Hancock yesterday morning announcing the death of John CRUSE, father of W. J. CRUSE of Ripley, at Kingston, New Mexico last Thursday. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1840. He came to America to Ontonagon county 1865 May 23 and worked for the Ridge mine there and he came to Keweenaw County and worked at the Central mine. In 1873 he went to Mexico and worked at the St Helena gold mine in the state of Sonora. He went all over the West working at different mines till he came to Kingston. The remains will be brought to Calumet for burial by his son of Ripley. He is survived by his wife and 2 sons-W. J. CRUSE and John A. He was an employed as a carpenter of the Calumet and Hecla Rolling mills in Lake Linden since 1867. He was born in Hamburg,Germany but has been a resident of Lake Linden for a long number of years. She leaves her husband and six children - Walter, Irene, Lawrence, Robericl, Rouel and Frederick. Mr FOUCHER was with the Michigan Smelting Works here. DIED- Frederick C. PAULL, aged 69 years, he died at his home in Lake Linden of a paralytic stroke yesterday evening. He was born in Devonshire, England He came to this country first in 1850 and stayed a short time, going back to Devon. He came back here 24 years ago and noticed a defect in his eyesight. He returned to England and than went to Germany for eye care. He came back to America in 1899 and had been totally blind for 23 years. He had two strokes last Sunday and died Thursday. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, came to America when a young man and had lived in Hancock and Quincy hill for many years. He worked for the Quincy mine and had an accident after many years there. DIED- A message announcing the death of Cornelius SHEA in Denver, Colorado from typhoid fever was received in this city. He left Hancock a few years ago to locate in Denver. He was a skilled boilermaker having learned the trade from his father. Seven years ago he left his father's shop and went to work at the Calumet and Hecla shops, Calumet. Three years ago while a resident of Calumet he married Miss Selma JOHNSON of Calumet. They moved to Duluth, Minnesota after their marriage and he worked there until a year ago. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad at Superior, Wisconsin where he caught a cold that began his fatal illness. DIED- Mrs John B. ROWE, aged 35 years, died at home at Tamarack Mills yesterday morning after being ill a short time. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Absalom DAVEY of Mason. He was born and raised in Hancock. He was a barber and was apprenticed by the late Charles LINDER. He is survived by his wife, child, mother, three sisters and four brothers. His father, Timothy O'NEILL died several years ago. The funeral will be held this morning from St Patrick's Catholic church, Hancock. He will be buried in the Hancock cemetery. RICHARDS leaves a wife and one son, two years old and PHILLIPS leaves a wife, as well as a brother Tom PHILLIPS, who left this mine about one month ago, after working this mine for two years, to go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND where they both were born.
