He went to South Africa to work in the gold fields. He said that he did not like the country very well. He stopped off at his old home in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, on his way back to Calumet. MARRIAGE- Louis F. HINTERTHEUR of Alberta Lee, Minnesota married Miss Agnes ROGERS, formerly of Appleton, Wisconsin now of Houghton, at the parsonage of St Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton on Wednesday noon .The reception afterwards at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. ROGERS of Houghton. Joseph ROGERS of Houghton was best man, the bride's brother. The bridesmaid was Miss Nellie MacNIESH of Appleton. They will reside in Alberta Lee where the groom is a travelling salesman for a firm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 1905 July 2 Sunday DIED- Louis BORN, one of the pioneer residents of Houghton, was found dead in his house in Houghton yesterday afternoon. He had been missing since Thursday. He had been a resident of Houghton since the 1850's and it is said he was prosperous owning considerable property. He at one time owned a saloon and later operated a ferry across Portage Lake. His wife left him several years ago and is living in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He is survived by two sisters and a brother, but the authorities do not know where the sisters live. Both the wife and brother have been notified of his death. His body will be shipped to Cleveland, Ohio and buried by his brother. DIED- The funeral of the late Joseph STUTTE was held yesterday afternoon at St Joseph's church, Lake Linden. Burial was at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- Word has been received in the Mohawk mine location that James NANKERVIS, who recently left Mohawk for Jackson, California, was killed there in a mine accident. He left Mohawk to go West to better his health. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He leaves a wife and family in Jackson. DIED- The funeral of the late Mrs. Marie TENETTI took place yesterday morning at the Calumet Italian church. Burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She is survived by a husband and one child. NEWS ITEM- Clifford and Marion INHOFF have left Laurium for North Bend, Oregon where they will make their future home. DIED-- Emil LALONE, aged 19 years, died yesterday noon by drowning the Kearsarge dam. He was a drill boy at the South Kearsarge branch of the Osceola Consolidated Mining Company. DIED- Mrs. Eugenie M. REES, widow of the late Seth REES of Houghton, died yesterday morning at the home of her son, Allen F. REES. In Houghton, from a stroke of paralysis. She was born 1835 November 16 at Rochester, Oakland County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Dr John S. LIVERMORE. In 1848 the family came to Lake Superior to LaPorte, Madeline Island where the father was an Indian Agent. Then they went to Marquette and then Fort Wilkins, at Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County, where Mrs. REES was married to her husband in 1857. She came to Houghton in 1861 from there and lived here ever since. She is survived by a son John, of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters- Mrs. BURLEY; Mrs. GAMBLE and a brother-R.R. LIVERMORE, all of Riverside, California. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the residence. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1905 July 4 Tuesday DIED-George PERRAULT, aged about 48 years, died Sunday morning at his home in Kearsarge from hydrophobia. He had been bitten last March by a dog. He is survived by a wife and 12 children. The funeral will be from the home and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet, on Wednesday. DIED- Oscar LANTO, died yesterday after a short illness at his home in Calumet. He leaves a wife and seven children. The funeral will take place Thursday with burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. WEDNESDAY July 5, 1905 is missing 1905 July 6 Thursday MARRIAGE- Arthur VIVIAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William. H.VIVIAN of Ripley, Michigan married Miss Frances MORRISON of Columbus, Indiana, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. MORRISON, at the bride's parent's home in Columbus on June 28 evening. They will live in Houghton. DIED- John SIMONICH, aged 43 years, died yesterday at his Calumet home as a result of a lengthy illness. He is survived by a wife and family residing in Austria. 1905 July 7 Friday CARD OF THANKS IN NEWSPAPER- Mrs. Catherine MESSNER thanks her friends for their kindness in her sorrowing for her husband, Michael MESSNER's death. YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William R. LUKE and Miss Katherine BROWN of Calumet Nick STERBENITZ and Miss Emma KOP, both of Quincy mine 1905 July 8 Saturday NEWS ITEM- William CARDIS and Thomas GURNEY were injured at the Ahmeek mine yesterday. They worked underground where they sustained serious injuries and were removed to the Tamarack hospital. NEWS ITEM- Mrs. John BENNETT and two children, Ernestine and John, are visiting from Duluth, Minnesota, with relatives in Calumet. She was a former resident of Calumet. MARRIAGE- Samuel EVA married Miss Anna KERKIN, took place at the groom's home at the Florida mine location, on Thursday night. The bride was attended Miss Ada EVA and the best man was Rev Sydney EVA of Trimountain. MARRIAGE- William RICHARDS married Miss Mary STREITZER, at the Florida mine location home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph STREITZER on Monday night. They will make their home in Laurium. 1905 July 9 Sunday NEWS ITEM- Henry TEMBY; John BARKLE; and William RICHARDS, all residents of South Range, sailed from New York for CORNWALL. ENGLAND where they will go to their old homes for a few months visit. NEWS ITEM- Pietro GURICO; Angeletto SILVESTRO; Antonio ZONIN and Luigo MOTTES purchased tickets at the South Range Bank yesterday for ship passage to Italy. They will leave today for their old home in Italy. MARRIAGES- Yesterday Justice OLVIER married two couples in his Hancock courtroom- 1. James RENALDI married Miss Secondina CARRATI, both of Painesdale 2. Thomas BROWN and Miss Mary Ellen TREMAYNE, both of Calumet DIED- John RICHARDS, aged 38 years, died yesterday noon while at work as a miner in the Centennial mine. He was working with his partner, John GEORGE, was laying blasting powder, and Mr RICHARDS was killed by a premature blast. He was single and lived with his sister, Mrs. William THOMAS of Centennial mine and brother, Edward at the same place. The funeral will take place Tuesday from the residence and the burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 July 11 Tuesday DIED- John GOULETTE, aged 73 years, died suddenly yesterday morning at his home in Laurium. He is survived by a wife and one son. The funeral will be from St Ann's church on Tuesday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery. MARRIAGE- Henry NATHANSON of Hancock married Miss Rose NEIMARK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. NEIMARK of Hancock, at the bride's parent's home Sunday night. The bridesmaid was the bride's sister, Miss Annette NEIMARK and the best man was Eugene WOLLSTEIN. MARRIAGE- John REDING of Hubbell married Miss Minnie STETTER of Hubbell, Sunday evening at St Cecelia's church, Hubbell. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Lizzie STETTER and the best man was Nicholas REDING, Jr. They will reside in Hubbell. MARRIAGE- Nicholas STEPPANICH of Quincy married Miss Emma KOPP, of Quincy, at St Patrick's Catholic Church, Hancock on Saturday morning. They will live in Quincy. NEWS ITEM- George WILLIAMS of Quincy mine location, left Friday for Dubuque, Iowa, where he will make his future home. NEWS ITEM- William J. MATTHEWS and family have arrived in Calumet from Australia where they resided for some time. They intend to make Calumet their future home. DIED- Mrs. J. P. REED, aged 66 years, died at the home of daughter, Mrs. John HILL of Centennial Heights, yesterday morning. She leaves three children-Mrs. HILL -Mrs. J. DOBBS; and son, J. R. REED. The funeral will take place Thursday from the Calumet Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She spent 30 years in the copper country and was one of the oldest settlers. She is a County Commissioner of Great Falls. 1905 July 13 Thursday MARRIAGE-John E. CHEVALIER of Hancock married Miss Nellie BLACK, daughter of John BLACK of Hancock, yesterday morning at St Patrick's church, Hancock. The best man was Russell BRAND of Houghton and the bridesmaid was Miss Mamie BLACK, sister of the bride. DIED- William HODGES, died by being stabbed in Geyser, Montana by George RICKARDS, on the night of the 5th of July. HODGES, aged about 35 years, came to Montana, with his father, from Hubbell, about 11 years ago and went to Great Falls. Later they went on a ranch 9 miles from Geyser. RICKARDS is determined to have murdered HODGES and he has fled. He leaves two brothers, George and Joseph of Geyser. MARRIAGE- James LOWE married Miss Maud MENZIES, at bride's home in Albion last night. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Florence MENZIES and the best man was William CARTER. DIED-Richard BICKHAM died yesterday at the Calumet home of William GILES. The funeral will take place on Saturday from the home. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- James GLASSON, aged 78 years, died at the home of Mr C. J. HAWKINS of Laurium. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the residence. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of John E. JONES, deceased, Annabella JONES, his widow, asked the court to appoint her the administatrix. NEWS ITEM- George MAJOR, who was employed at the old Portage Lake Mining Gazette, 28 years ago, but who now is located in Helena, Montana, is visiting friends and relatives in Houghton. This is his first visit to Houghton in 12 years. John DRAKE, at their home in Baraga, Baraga County, Michigan. They will reside in Baraga. DIED- Mrs. John HALL, aged 34 years, died Thursday afternoon in the Lake Linden Hospital, of cancer. She was born in Devonshire, ENGLAND she came to America when a girl and taking up residence in Missouri. About twelve years ago she came to this district and lived here ever since. She leaves a husband and five small children. The funeral will be from Christ Episcopal Church, Calumet on Sunday afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Mr Laurie JOHNSON, one of the most prominent Finnish citizens in Calumet, died at his home in Calumet this week. He came to this area in 1869 from Finland, and lived here ever since. For 20 years he worked for the Calumet and Hecla Mining company in Calumet. He left there to go into the contracting business for himself. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. The funeral will take place from the Bethelhem Church this afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Andrew AXELSON, deceased, Mathilda, his widow, was appointed administratirix of the estate. PROBATE MATTER- Mary NIEMI and Charles J. WICKSTROM, were appointed executrix and executor of the estate of Isaac NEIMI, deceased. 1905 July 16 Sunday DIED- Dr Charles McLEAN, aged 45 years, died at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock, due to appendicitis. He was born in Belleville. Canada and went to the University of Michigan taking the dentist's course. He came to Hancock two years after graduation and stayed there till his death. He leaves a wife and eight children- Dora; Charles; Bruce; Lilly; Donald; Gillian; Kenneth and Allen; also his mother at Kingston, Canada and 3 sisters and two brothers. The funeral will held on Monday morning from the Hancock Masonic hall. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DIED- The coroner's inquest over the body of Anton CHOPP, who died Thursday morning from injuries from falling from a skip, in C shaft of the Champion mine, stated he accidentally died. He was about 50 years old and had worked at the mine for a year. The funeral was yesterday morning at the Atlantic church and burial was at the Atlantic cemetery. NEWS ITEM- William STEVENS of CORNWALL, ENGLAND is visiting friends and relatives in Calumet for a short time. 1905 July 19 Wednesday DIED- Mrs. William H. OPIE, aged about 38 years, died very suddenly at her Hancock home of heart failure. She leaves her husband; two daughters and one son .The funeral will be held Thursday at the Hancock Methodist church. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Mrs. Joseph WILMERS, an old settler, died at her home in Calumet yesterday morning from an ailment that she had for some time and grief on her husband's death a few weeks ago. She is survived by 5 children. The funeral will take place tomorrow from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 July 20 Thursday NEWS ITEM- Ex Sheriff James D. CUDLIP of Dickinson County, Michigan, writes relatives in Iron Mountain, Michigan that he will leave to go to Troy, Flathead County, Montana. He has purchased a large tract of timber and will work logging it. NEWS ITEM- Fred KARINEN will leave Calumet today for Astoria, Oregon, where he will engage in the newspaper business in that city. All were born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. 1905 July 22 Saturday MARRIAGE-- Douglas McINTYRE of St John, Washington married Miss Rebecca CAMPBELL, daughter of Mr and Mrs. John A. CAMPBELL of L'Anse, Baraga County, Michigan on Wednesday night at the L'Anse Methodist church .The four bridesmaids were Misses Mabel PROCTOR; Lulu BLANKENHORN, both of L'Anse; and Misses Grace HARRIS and Louise WEIBER, both of Houghton. The ushers were Charles BLANKENHORN; Gordon HEUGHENS; Harris SMITH; Walter B. SEIFERT; Thomas BRENNAN and John CAMPBELL. The best man was S. Russell SMITH of Calumet and the maid of honor was Miss Florence CAMPBELL. They will live in St John, Washington. MARRIAGE- James HARPER married Miss Ida McCAULEY, daughter of Mr and Mrs. James McCAULEY, at their home in Laurium, this week. The bride was attended by Miss Alicia McCAULEY, her sister and the best man was Thomas HARPER, his brother of Pembine. They will live in Laurium. NEWS ITEM- Miss Tillie HOPF left Lake Linden on Thursday to go to Butte, Montana to visit her sister, Mrs. Eugene ROWE. 1905 July 23 Sunday DIED- The body of Mrs. James WILCOX of Greenland, Ontonagon County, Michigan will be brought to Houghton this morning for burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- Mrs. Thomas LANGDON, aged 34 years, died Friday evening at her home in West Houghton. A husband and one child mourn her. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at St Ignatius Catholic Church, Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. She was the daughter of Patrick FITZPATRICK of Hancock. 1905 July 25 Tuesday YESTERDAY-MINING LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK R. Harry READ of Calumet and Miss Christina M. MacDONALD, of Lake Linden MARRIAGE- Thomas Henry BAWDEN of Hurontown married Miss Mabel PEARCE of Hurontown, at the home of James BAWDEN of Hurontown, last Saturday evening. DIED- Jeremiah DONELLY, an old resident of Calumet, aged 30 years, died Sunday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. John THOMAS of Tamarack. A brother, Edward DONELLY survived him. The funeral will be at Sacred Heart church this morning. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 July 26, Wednesday NEWS ITEM- Joseph STUKEL has left his home in Calumet to go to Austria to visit his friends and relatives for a few months. MARRIAGE- R. Harry READ of Calumet married Miss Christina MacDONALD, daughter of Mrs. Marion MacDONALD of Lake Linden, in the Lake Linden Congregational church, last night. The bridesmaids were Misses Myrta FISHER; Georgie EDWARDS; Jessie PAULL; Katherine STEWART; Christina CAMERON; Elizabeth DEARDON; Eve BROWN and Euphemia CAMERON. Miss Jean MacDONALD, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. The groom was supported by Peter E. RUPPE of Calumet. They will live in Calumet. 1905 July 27 Thursday DIED- Jonas A. FARNHAM, aged 89 years, father of Mrs. Ira E. RANDALL, died at his daughter's home in Houghton yesterday morning. He was born in Hindenburg, Rutland County, Vermont on March 20, 1816 He moved to Western New York in 1825 in Brockton, Chatauqua County where he bought a farm that he owned to his death. When he moved to Brockton that area was considered the far West. After the death of his wife 4 years ago, he came to Houghton to his daughter's home. He has one son in Brockton. His daughter took the remains to Brockton, New York for burial. MARRIAGE- Mr and Mrs. Ralph WHITE who were married in Houghton, Tuesday afternoon, left in the evening for Omaha, Nebraska, where they will make their future home. DIED- Mr and Mrs. Thomas MAUNDERS of Quincy Hill, left for Colorado, in response to word that his brother was killed in a Colorado mine at Russell Gulch. DIED- Herman KAUPPILA, aged about 24 years, single, a Finnish miner, was killed in the No 5 shaft of the Baltic mine, yesterday morning by a blasting cap exploding in his hand. He came to this country from Finland and spent a few months at the Baltic mine. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Finnish Atlantic church. Burial will be at the Atlantic cemetery. DIED- Word has been received yesterday that George HOATSON, well known in Calumet, has died at Mount Clemens, Michigan of pneumonia. It was only a short time ago he was in Calumet and he was in robust health then. For the past two or three years he spent a lot of time at Mount Clemens and came back to his old home for short periods of time. He leaves a wife and 9 children, all of them live in Calumet. The body will be brought back to Calumet for burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. The funeral will take place from the Laurium, family residence on Saturday. NEWS ITEM- Thomas LESH of Calumet has gone to Austria to visit friends and relatives in his old hometown. NEWS ITEM- Joshua LANGSFORD has returned to his home near Springfield, Missouri where he is employed in one of the zinc mines. He spent two weeks in Calumet visiting his parents. DIED Mrs. Stina PISPA, aged 62 years, died yesterday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Erick KIVERA, in Yellow Jacket, after a lengthy illness. The funeral will take place from her home Friday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Miss Winnie TRETHEWEY of Butte, Montana is the guest of Miss Mildred FRANCIS in Lake Linden, for a few weeks. 1905 July 28 Friday NEWS ITEM- Mrs. Bessie HAMPTON and daughter, Evelyn and Mrs. George TAYLOR of Goldfield, Colorado, who have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. William POLGLASE of Calumet, returned to their homes yesterday afternoon. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Charles STENBERG, deceased, his widow, Mrs. Maria STENBERG, asked that she be appointed the administrator of the estate. MARRIAGE- William GROSSE of Hancock married Miss Elizabeth Ann ROBERTS, of CORNWALL, ENGLAND at the home at 800 Scott Street, Hancock last evening. They will live in Hancock. MARRIAGE- Arthur E. ROBERTS of the Quincy location, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary yesterday afternoon. He came to Ontonagon County, Michigan in 1854 from CORNWALL, ENGLAND, staying there 4 months, he returned to CORNWALL to marry his sweetheart on 1855 August 23. He was 20 years old then. They came back to America to Ontonaogon County. After a time there they spent one year in California and from there to South America for 3 and a half years, returning to CORNWALL in 1861. The following year they came to Maryland for 18 months. They came to Hancock in 1862 and lived there ever since. He has been employed in the Pewabic mine, Shelden Columbia and Quincy mines in Hancock area. DIED- Matthew NORTHEY, aged 59 years, a pioneer resident of Houghton, died yesterday morning at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock of a complication of diseases. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to America in 1867, upon the advice of his brother HARRY, who came here two years previous. After wandering in different states for 3 years, in 1870 he came to the copper country. He lived here 3 years and went to California for 3 years, coming back to Red Jacket. In 1877 he moved to Houghton and lived there till his death. He married Miss Rose TECLA of Houghton, who survives him. He was engaged in the manufacture of pop and retired 3 years ago. They will reside in Calumet. 1905 August 27 Sunday NEWS ITEM- Mrs. John TIBOR of Hancock went to Lake Linden Friday night in response to a message stating her mother, Mrs. Catherine THILL was seriously ill. DIED- Samuel P. PAYNE, aged 63 years, died at his home in Hancock yesterday morning. He was a pioneer of the copper country. He was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England on 1842 May 8. He came to America in 1860 and located in Cohoces, New York. In the fall of 1862 he came to Keweenaw County and was married at Copper Falls in 1864 to Miss Mary A. HAM, the daughter of Mr and Mrs. James HAM of Copper Falls, Keweenaw County. During the Civil War he was visited by his father who was a prominent physician and was arrested twice for being a spy, charges that he was acquitted of. He learned the butcher's trade at Copper Falls and took a position as manager of Bear Brothers Meat Market of on Quincy hill at the old Pewabic mine location. He worked there till 1875 and quit to enter into business for himself in Hancock, for 30 years. Two years ago he was stricken with paralysis and finally died of it. He is survived by 8 children- James; Samuel; Thomas; Charles; Edward of Denver, Colorado; Benjamin of Billings Montana and Mrs. Angus GILLIS. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Hancock Methodist church, burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEM- Mr and Mrs. Henry BOWDEN and John W. ALLEN left Mohawk Wednesday to go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND to visit their former homes for a few months. MARRIAGE- Evert KOTOLA married Miss Hannah NORDSTROM, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Charles NORDSTROM at the Mohawk home of the bride on Saturday, August 19. The bride was supported by Miss Sophia LAHTI and the best man was Sam KOTOLA his brother. MARRIAGE- Frank FRENETTE, son of Mr and Mrs. M. J. FRENETTE married Miss Tessie MURY of Kilbourne City, Wisconsin, formerly a teacher at Dollar Bay schools, at Beloit, Wisconsin where the groom has been playing baseball, at St Thomas church last week. The bride was attended by Mrs. Alexandria GAGNON, sister of the groom and the best man was Uclia JOLLE. 1905 August 30 Wednesday DIED- Peter BERGLIN, an inmate of the Houghton County Poor Farm died yesterday, aged 60 years. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the FARM and he was buried in the Poor Farm cemetery. NEWS ITEM- Thomas ROWE has returned to his home in Butte, Montana after visiting with James DYER at his South Kearsarge home. NEWS ITEM- While at work yesterday at Blumenthal's store, in Calumet, John T. ROWE sustained severe injuries. He was trying to move a radiator when it fell on him. 1905 August 31 Thursday DIED- Milton KNEEBONE, aged 23 years, died at his home at Laurium after a short illness. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John KNEEBONE who were born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND; two brothers and two sisters. The funeral will take place Saturday from the Laurium Methodist Church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED-Isaac W. LIIMITTA, aged 61 years, of St Mary's location, Calumet, died Tuesday at his home after a lengthy illness. The funeral will take place this afternoon at the Finnish Lutheran Church, Calumet. Burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE- William PEARCE of Calumet married Miss Minnie HENDRICKS, daughter of Mrs. Anna HENDRICKS, at the home of the bride's mother in Lake Linden, last night. The bridesmaids were the Misses Mary PEARCE and Louise BOTT. The best man was Henry HENDRICKS, brother of the bride. They will live in Lake Linden. MARRIAGE- Otis Dwight FELLOWS, Jr. of Boston, Massachussetts married Miss Emma PENBERTHY, daughter Mr and Mrs. E. R. PENBERTHY, of West Houghton, at the bride's parents home, last evening. The maid of honor was Miss Elizabeth McRAE, a cousin of the bride and the bridesmaids were Miss Jennie QUIRK and Miss Eliza TURNER. The best man was J. H. HEDGES of Lansing, Michigan. They will reside at Trimountain. DIED- Anthony MARTIN, who had been a resident of the copper country since the early 1850's, died yesterday at his home in West Houghton of apoplexy. He was born in New York City and after coming to the copper country he worked in all of the principal mines of the area. He married a copper country girl who survived him, and 9 children- Mrs. Tony A. WEBBER of Hancock; Mrs. Henry KRELLWITZ and Mrs. George ROBBINS, both of Houghton; the Misses Frances; Agnes and Folna MARTIN; the Messrs John P.; Tony H; Joseph and Steven MARTIN, all of Houghton.
