She formerly lived in Houghton. DIED- Fred LeMERE, an old resident of Hancock for many years, died at his Quincy Hill home of a complication of diseases on Sunday evening. He is survived by a wife, 2 sons and one daughter. His funeral will held Thursday morning from St Joseph's Church, Hancock. Burial will be at the Old Hancock cemetery. NEWS ITEM -NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC, As my wife, Lillian, has left my bed and board without just cause, I will not be responsible for any debts contracted by her after this date, 1905 May 1 signed William HOLLOW. Thomas was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and is aged 39 years at this date. NEWS ITEM- Miss Maggie WALTZ, accompanied by a large party of Finnish people from allover the copper country, left yesterday morning for Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, and there will go to Drummond Island, where they expect to start a Finnish colony, should the place prove suitable. The party will stake out claims of 160 acres each, and will return there in 6 months to take up residence permanently. . DIED- Mrs. Susan MURRAY, aged 84 years, died at her home in South Kearsarge yesterday, after a short illness, the funeral will take place Tuesday. NEWS ITEM- Joseph A. MEYER, for a number of years a resident of Calumet, has resigned his position with L. SIBILISKY, and will leave this week for Duluth, Minnesota, where he has a more lucrative position. 1905 May 3 Wednesday NEWS ITEM- Fred WESTCOTT is expected in Houghton from Toronto, Canada today and will enter the employ of the Portage Lake Hardware Company in Houghton. YESTERDAY- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Joseph WICKLEY of Atlantic mine and Miss Rose BOHRER of Hancock Mederic PECOTTE, Jr. of Calumet and Dora DWYER of Laurium Vladimir VIJNOVIC and Miss Smilja MROOZ, both of Quincy township MARRIED- Joseph WICKLEY of the Atlantic mine married Miss Rose BOHRER of Hancock at St Joseph's church, Hancock, yesterday morning. The bride was attended Miss Minnie GITZEN and Frank BOHRER, brother of the groom, was the best man. They will make their home in Houghton. NEWS ITEM- Thomas COLLINS of the Wolverine mine has left the area to go West to make his future home. NEWS ITEM- Richard GLANVILLE and Thomas BULLOCK have left Calumet to go West to seek their future home. NEWS ITEM- Mr. and Mrs. Albert LAMARCHE and their son of Calumet have gone to Ironwood, Michigan to make their future home. DIED Mrs. Henry CARPENTLER died yesterday morning at the Lake Linden Hospital. She was brought to Calumet and is at the home of William MORSETH of Laurium. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning from Sacred Heart church, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Miss I. ROWE of Laurium came to Jacobstow to work for the Portage Entry Sandstone company as a stenographer. NEWS ITEM- Nels 0. NICHOLSON left Quincy Hill yesterday for Fargo, South Dakota where he has purchased a farm. NEWS ITEM- Patrick GOGGIN of Quincy has resigned his position as a teamster for the Quincy Mining Company and will leave tomorrow for Butte, Montana, where he will remain. NEWS ITEM- Gene FOUNTAINE has resigned his position with the Quincy Mining company and left Saturday for his old home in Canada where he will return to live permanently. 1905 May 4 Thursday MARRIAGE- Joseph SCHNEIDERHAHN married Miss Ella EVERT, at St Joseph's church, Hancock yesterday morning. Miss Barbara EVERT attended the bride and the best man was Louis TREDEAU of Calumet. They will live in Hancock. NEWS ITEM- Edward GRIBBEN, a young man of Trimountain left Monday for Idaho where he will make his future home. NEWS ITEM- William JOHNS; James JOHNS; James D. RICHARDS; Mr. and Mrs. Edward GRIBBEN, all of Trimountain left there Monday to go to New York and sail to CORNWALL, ENGLAND, to visit relatives and friends for a few months. DIED- Samuel HOLME, aged about 55 years, a farmer living back of Swedetown died suddenly in Laurium yesterday morning while purchasing a cow. He had heart trouble. He leaves a wife and three grown up children. MARRIED- Mederic PECOTTE, Jr. married Miss Dora DWYER yesterday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Calumet. They will live in Calumet. DEATH- Horace J. STEVENS of Houghton had word of the death of his mother, Mrs. Louise Young STEVENS yesterday at Chattaraugus, New York of heart failure. He will be met on the way back to her home by two of his brothers and Henry YOUNG, her brother, of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. She will be buried at her hometown 1905 May 5 Friday NEWS ITEM- Herbert TRELOAR of Hurontown returned from a visit to his mother in the hometown in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. DIED- Frank MURRAY, aged 35 years, a Hungarian miner employed at the South Hecla mine was killed yesterday afternoon by a skip which came sooner than he expected and it struck him in the neck. He had been in this country a short time and was single. NEWS ITEM- John G. GLASSON of Calumet has gone to CORNWALL, ENGLAND for three months to visit relatives in his old hometown. 1905 May 6 Saturday DIED-Fermino FAVRI, aged 28 years, died at the Negaunee mine, Marquette, County, by a mine blast that had falling ground land on him. He came from Hurley, Wisconsin, having lived in Negaunee less than a year. H. ALLEN. DIED- Not until the owner of the boarding house where he lived came to the Tamarack mine to find out what became of Thomas SALUBEK. Found that the man who was found dead on the cage at the mine was identified. He died the day before yesterday and he was identified yesterday. He worked for the mine. 1905 May 9 Tuesday DIED- William Edward LEARY, aged 22 years, single, of Hancock, died yesterday morning of typhoid fever at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock. He was a life long resident of Hancock, being born there 1875 July 27.. He was first an employee of the Quincy mine, then he went to the Houghton County Street Railway. The funeral will be this morning from St Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGE- John BARKE married Miss Jennie PERKIOMAKI at the Atlantic Finnish Lutheran church on last Saturday night. They will live in Atlantic where they both had lived before the marriage. NEWS ITEM- William J. GOLDSWORTHY and Edward PERRY have left the Mohawk mine location to go West to make their homes there. NEWS ITEM- James MARTIN left Calumet Sunday for Liverpool, England for an extended visit. NEWS ITEM- John ROWE; John NANKERVIS and George TREGIGY left Calumet last Sunday for CORNWALL, ENGLAND where they will be gone a few months on a visit with relatives and friends DIED- Mrs. M. PURANIEN, aged 23 years, died yesterday at her home in Calumet after a short illness. She is survived by her husband and one child. The funeral will place tomorrow night from the Calumet Finnish church on Pine Street. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Mr. and Mrs. Nat DUCAS left Houghton Sunday for Pueblo, Colorado, where Mr. DUCAS has accepted a position. He has been in the employ of ABEL's liquor store while in residence here. 1905 May 10 Wednesday MARRIAGE -Louis POISSANT of Hubbell married Miss Cora FRENNETTE of Houghton, at St Ignatius Catholic Church, Houghton, yesterday afternoon .The bride was supported by her sister, Josephine FRENNETTE and Stanislaus POISSANT, brother of the groom, was the groomsman. They will live at Hubbell. MARRIAGE- Word was received in Detroit, Michigan yesterday of the marriage of Samuel BRADY, Superintendent of the Michigan mine, of Rockland, Ontonagton County, Michigan and Mrs. Anna Herbel GAMBLE, formerly of Jacksonville, Illinois and St Louis, Missouri, performed at Citronelle, Alabama, yesterday morning. They will live in Rockland. MARRIAGE- Adelard St ANDRE of Ispeming, Marquette County, Michigan married Miss Dora LAJOLE of Simo, Ontgonagon County, Michigan on last Tuesday at Mass City, Ontonagon County, Michigan. They will reside in Ishpeming. MARRIAGE- Mr. Desire VERSAILLES married Miss Marie FOSTER at St Joseph's church, Hancock yesterday morning. They are both of Hancock.. The bride was attended by the Misses Cecelia DRISCOLL and Alice REHEAULT and the groom was waited on by his brother, Albert VERSAILLES. They will live in Hancock. NEWS ITEM- Alfred PASCOE of Tamarack mine shaft number 5 has returned after a 5 month visit to CORNWALL, ENGLAND. DIED Michal STEMATZ, aged 30 years, died at his home in Calumet as a result of tuberculosis. He is survived by his wife. The funeral will take place Thursday from the Calumet Croatian church. Burial will be at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- James ROWE, a timber man in the employ of the Tamarack Mining company, was quite seriously injured this week while at work at No 2 shaft. He was walking thru a drift, stumbled and badly cut his wrist. He will be off work for two weeks. 1905 May 11 Thursday DIED- The bodies of John VERRAN and Dennis COGGAN were found in the Quincy mine, yesterday morning. They were killed by an air blast in the mine. Mr. VERRAN, aged 54 years, was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and had worked for the Quincy mine for a number of years. He is survived by a wife and three daughters. His funeral will be on Saturday from the Pewabic Methodist church. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. Mr. GOGGIN, age 20 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip GOGGIN of the Pewabic mine. Funeral at St Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial at Old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. DIED- The funeral of Mrs. Rita NIEMALA, aged 68 years, who died Tuesday at her home at the Arcadian mine, will be held this afternoon from the Lutheran church, West Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. She is survived by a husband. PROBATE MATTER-In the matter of the estate of May G. SATTERLEY, deceased, her husband William G. SATTERLEY asked the court to appoint him administrator of the estate. 1905 May 12 Friday MARRIAGE- Thomas INGRAM married Mrs. Eliza KNEEBONE, at the Hancock home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. FINCH last Wednesday evening. The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. John BILKIE. They will live in Hancoc. NEWS ITEM- Martin TRESIDDER of Kearsarge, has returned from a few months visit with relatives in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. 1905 May 13 Saturday MARRIAGE- Herbert LAUX of Phoenix mine location, Keweenaw County married Miss Minnie DONOVAN of Calumet at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Calumet on Tuesday morning. Miss Mary KRITZEN, a niece of the groom, acted as bridesmaid and the best man was Dan DONOVAN, a brother of the groom. NEWS ITEM- Thomas COX; William NICHOLS and John NORTHY, all of Bisbee, Arizona, have returned to Calumet and will remain here. NEWS ITEM- Canfield HALL has resigned his position at the Tamarack mine machine shop. He will go to Detroit, Michigan some time next week to locate there. NEWS ITEM- James PERRY of LELANT, CORNWALL, ENGLAND has arrived in Calumet to make his home in Calumet. He was accompanied by two of his brothers, who will also take up residence. (Their names were not shown) PROBATE MATTER-In the matter of the estate of Abraham NIVA, deceased, Charles G. HANSEN, asked the court to appoint him the administrator. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Christ WILLMES, deceased, his widow, Susan K. WILLMES, asked the court to appoint her administatirx of the estate. 1905 May 14 Sunday NEWS ITEM- Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas EVERT leave Hancock today to visit in their old home in Germany. They will return in a few months. Nicholas DONDINGER will accompany them and will stay in Germany. NEWS ITEM-Thomas SEYMOUR and Joseph ROWLlNG of HAYLE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND have arrived in Calumet and will make their home there. DIED- John KRAEMER, aged 37 years, who left Hurontown only four weeks ago to go west, died in an explosion in the Corra mine in Butte, Montana on Friday. His aged mother received a wire telling her of the sad news, she lives in Hurontown. The funeral will be held in Butte. He worked at the Isle Royale mine and quit that work to go west, with another Hurontown man, Joseph WAGNER, who is in Butte. YESTERDAY, MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY BARAGA COUNTY CLERK Joseph TROMBLEY and Rose PICHETT, both of Covington. NEWS ITEM- Miss Mary SHEA left L'Anse, Baraga County, Michigan this week to go to Ontonagon, Ontonagon County, Michigan where she has accepted a position with the Ontonagon Lumber and Cedar Company. NEWS ITEM- Henry VOLLMER and family left Dollar Bay yesterday for Detroit, Michigan, where they will live permanently. He has been a resident of Dollar Bay a number of years. 1905 May 16 Tuesday NEWS ITEM- Richard VERRAN of the Quincy mine left Saturday for Astabula, Ohio where he will locate. NEWS ITEM-- Matt LEBISTE and Alfred ROOKEL, with their families have left Mohawk location to go to Mississippi where they have purchased farms there and will locate there permanently. DIED- Miss Stilda PERALA, aged 22 years, died Sunday morning at her home in Elbowtown. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the Hancock Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEM- Morley TUCKER and J. T. MINERS arrived in Baltic, Friday from CORNWALL, ENGLAND. The two men will locate in Baltic permanently. DIED- Isaac NIEMI, aged 53 years, one of the best known Finnish men in the United States, died at his Calumet home, of a complication of diseases on Sunday morning. He was born in the province of Turtula, Sweden, 1853 June 4 and he came to America in July 1880, locating at the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County, where he worked some time and later went to the Calumet and Hecla mine working underground. He was married in Hancock 1881 October 29. In 1888 he opened a store in Calumet and 11 years later he entered the firm of WICKSTROM, NIEMI and Company in Calumet. He leaves a wife and 7 children- Louis; Emil; Edward; Emma; Ethel; Elmard and Elina. The funeral will be this afternoon at the Calumet Lutheran Apostolic Church on 9th street. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM -William PASCOE of HAYLE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND arrived in Calumet recently and will locate in this city . NEWS ITEM- Harvey LAVIGNE of Montreal, Canada, arrived in Calumet and will reside at the home of his sister at North Tamarack . NEWS ITEM- Henry and Richard THOMAS of CORNWALL, ENGLAND arrived in Calumet and will make their homes here. 1905 May 17 Wednesday YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Jacob YARP and Miss Katie VOETSCH, both of Houghton. DIED- The funeral of Mrs. HEINTZ (no Christian name shown) aged 87 years of Hurontown, who died Monday of stomach trouble will be held at her Hancock home this afternoon. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND 1820 March 8 and emigrated to America when a young man. He was in the contracting business for several years and a janitor in his later years. He has been in the employ of the Mineral Range Railroad for the past 12 years. DIED- Oscar SARINEN, aged about 40 years, was hit on the head with a beer bottle, by Elii OLGREN, at his South Range boarding house on last Sunday morning. He died Friday night and his murderer fled the area with Oscar -TILENEN who was with him at the time of the fight. They were found Sunday night in a saloon at Painesdale. Both SARINEN and OLGREN are married and their families are in Finland. A load of rock was being hauled to the top when the cable split and the skip plunged down the shaft killing them. Also Charles PETERSON and Abram HENDRICK were injured. The funeral of Fred PAUZE will take place this morning from the Allouez church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. He leaves a widow and two children. The remains of Mr FIESH were shipped to Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan for burial and he was single. NEWS ITEM- Olaf HOGANSON left Calumet last night for Norway where he will visit relatives and friends for 3 months. DIED- Henry DRITTLER Sr. aged 79 years, died at his home in Hancock after a brief illness. He was one of Hancock's pioneers, coming to Hancock in 1859 and helped open up the Quincy mine. He was born 1826 June 6 in Aslen, Kingdom of Wurtemburg, Germany and was educated in a mining school in Germany. He came to America in 1848 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the next year he came to the Cliff mine, Keweenaw County and worked there till 1858 and than to the Quincy mine. In 1852 he married Fredricka MERTZ. His wife survives him as well as these children- Mrs. Pauline UNDER; Henry DRITTLER, Jr.; William A.; Bismarck A. He was manager of Baer Brothers Meat Market in Hancock and lived in Hancock. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John JAMES, who came from CORNWALL, ENGLAND, and he was born at the Cliff Mine, Keweenaw County, 1859 October 23. In 1879 she came to America with her son to Dayton, Ohio for 10 years. She then came to Hancock and lived with her daughter till her death. Xavier SCHMITT, her husband died in Germany. She is also survived by one son- Xavier, Jr.. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon by the pastor of the Hancock German Lutheran church, at the home of her daughter. She was born Miss Mary MEEHAN, in the county of Tipperary, Ireland in 1822. In 1851 she came to America and for the first 8 years lived in New York. In 1860 May she came to Hancock, where she lived till her death. In 1861 she married Anthony KLEBER who died in June 1873. They had no children. Since the time of her husband's death till last fall, she lived with her nephew, F. S. MEEHAN and since then with Mrs. RYAN. They both live in Mohawk and will continue to do so. 1905 June 13 Tuesday DIED- Nicholas AHO, aged 26 years, of Oskar, drowned while crossing Portage Lake in a row boat, on Sunday afternoon. He was being rowed across by Charles JOHNSON, the only witness to the death. AHO, a Finnish man, stood up in the boat even though JOHNSON says when he told him it would be dangerous, causing the boat to tip over. He was employed as a laborer by Jacob JUNTINEN at Oskar. He was single and no known relatives are found to be in the copper country. DIED Mrs. Mary URBANSKI, aged 27 years, died at her home in Calumet, after a short illness, this past week. DIED- John PENBERTHY, a middle aged man, died yesterday morning from a fall of rock at the Calumet and Hecla mine in Calumet. He had been in the employ as a miner for the company for some time past. He is survived by a wife and family. DIED- Joseph WILMERS, Sr, aged 79 years, died yesterday afternoon of chronic bronchitis at his home in Calumet.. He was one of Calumet's oldest citizens. He came to Calumet when it was little more than a wilderness and established his home. He did much to help the growth of Red Jacket, as a private citizen. He is survived by a wife and five children. One son, John, lives in Durango, Colorado. The funeral will be on Saturday from the home. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. A complication of internal troubles caused her death. She was born at Wmricham Rhine, Germany in 1846 and came to America at age 7 years and stayed in Chicago a short time, going to Port Washington, Wisconsin. She was married in Chicago 38 years ago. She leaves a husband and children- sons Nicholas; John and George, all of Hancock; and daughters- Mrs. W. WASHBURN and Miss Kate of Hancock, also Mrs. Alex Campbell of Marquette, Michigan. She came to Hancock 6 years ago having left Marquette where she lived a great while. NEWS ITEM- Miss Martha BURT arrived this week in South Range from CORNWALL, ENGLAND to be married to Samuel BERRYMAN. She is living at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel HAWES of Calumet until her wedding. MARRIAGE- Sidney C. VIVIAN of Calumet married Miss Margaret Hutson WEIR, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. William WEIR of Calumet, at the home of the bride's parents, last evening. The bridesmaid was Miss Mae WEIR, the bride's sister and the best man was Robert ALLEN. They will live in Calumet. MARRIAGE- John BLACK of Houghton, married Miss Malvinia, daughter of Capt. James MILLIGAN of Calumet, yesterday at the home of the bride's father. The bridesmaid was Miss Nina STREETER of Houghton and the best man was Paul SWIFT of Houghton. They will make their home in East Houghton. MARRIAGE- Fred MAY of Laurium married Miss Charity PEARCE, daughter Mr. and Mrs. R. H. PEARCE of Laurium, at the home of the bride's parents, last night. The wedding march was played by Miss Jennie SINCOCK.The bridesmaid was Miss Minnie HENDRICKS of Calumet. They will reside in Laurium. MARRIAGE- Joseph RICHTER married Miss Caroline THIBODEAU at St Joseph's church, Lake Linden, yesterday morning. NEWS ITEM- Richard OLIVER and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur CUMMINGS, both of North Tamarack mine location have gone to Pennsylvania, where they expect to make their future homes. NEWS ITEM- Capt. William POLLARD, head mining captain at the Wolverine mine has returned from a visit to CORNWALL, ENGLAND from a few months visit to his old home. DIED- Gustav KUMPULA, aged 45 years, died yesterday morning from appendicitis after a 3 days illness at his Calumet home. He is survived by his wife and three children. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at the Calumet Finnish Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet.
