She was a daughter of Mrs. Mary Ann KINSMAN, of Quincy. She was married 10 years ago to her husband. Her husband and son, nine years old mourn her. Also brothers Alfred; John; William; Richard; William and Albert KINSMAN. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the Pewabic Methodist church. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- Mrs. Murt BROWN, aged about 22 years, of Franklin mine location, died at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock after an operation yesterday morning. She has a brother, T. R. McGRATH at Bisbee, Arizona and he was notified of her death. NEWS ITEM- Thomas CURTIS and John H. MAY will leave Trimountain today and go West where they will locate. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of George BAWDEN, deceased, Mary Ann CHELLEW asked the court to appoint her administratix of the estate. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. DIED-Herman ONKA was killed and Allen CAMPBELL, Albert NICHOLS, and Oscar ALTANEN were seriously injured due to a premature blast in the Red Jacket mine shaft, yesterday afternoon. The men were working together, and in some way the hole they were charging exploded before they could get out of the way. ONKA was killed outright, he was 40 years old and resided at the Red Jacket mine location. He is survived by a wife and five children. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the Finnish church on 8th Street, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 March 2 Thursday PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Joseph GOTTSTEIN, deceased, William F. MILLER, administrator asked the court to assign the residue of the estate to Mary F. LEIBLEIN and Annie GOTTSTEIN. Dated 1905 February 24 DIED- The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary McCARTHY on Friday morning with services at St Patrick's church, Hancock. BICKLE and Emma MILLER of Houghton 1905 March 3 Friday MARRIED -Alexander WEBSTER of Merrill, Wisconsin married Miss Eliza MAHER of Hurontown on Tuesday morning by Father FEZEK in St Ignatius Catholic Church, Houghton. NEWS ITEM- Bat CARAMELA of Franklin mine location left Wednesday for Los Angeles, California where he will make his future home. DIED- Herman HAYNA, about 36 years old, was killed yesterday afternoon at Shaft number 13 at the Calumet and Hecla mine. He was the 2nd man to die at that mine this week. He accidentally lit the mine blast with his lamp instead of the candle usually used to set off a blast and was killed by the premature blast. He is survived by a wife and five children. He had worked at Calumet a few months after leaving the Kearsarge mine. He operated a store at the Ronda mine and lived there at his death. The funeral will take place at the Finnish church on 8th Street, Calumet on Sunday afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Kate BISCHOFF left Calumet yesterday for Los Angeles, California where she will make her future home. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Peter WAISANEN, mentally incompetent, Victor WAISANEN asked the court to appoint him guardian of the estate. 1905 March 4 Saturday 1905 March 3-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Joseph KAUFFMAN of Calumet and Harriet Lucille BAKER of Escanaba, Michigan NEWS ITEM- Matt AMOISCH and Edward GRIMMICKS have left Calumet to go to Bisbee, Arizona to make their future home . 1905 March 5 Sunday DIED- Sampson HOAR, aged about 55 years, died Friday night at his home in Trimountain of cancer of the stomach. He lived at Trimountain mine almost from its opening. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to the United States when a young man. He worked as a miner until 3 weeks ago when he was too sick to work. He is survived by his wife and nine children- Miss May; and sons- Fred ; Albert; Sampson ; Arthur ; Charles; Walter; Russell and Howard. The funeral will take place tomorrow at St James Trimountain Methodist church. He leaves a wife and 8 children in his Hancock home. The funeral will be Thursday from St Joseph's church, Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DIED- John BACKMAN, an old resident of Laurium, died at his home yesterday after a lengthy illness. He is survived by a wife and family. The funeral will be from the home Thursday and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Herman ALATALO, aged 70 years, died yesterday at his home in Allouez, Keweenaw County, due to old age. He is survived by a wife and grown up children. MARRIAGE- Thomas O'CONNELL married Miss Clara GUBBA on Monday morning, at the Rockland, Ontonagon county Catholic church. They are both of Rockland where they will reside. DIED -Mrs. Feliceta HOPF, a most aged Lake Linden resident, died at her home Sunday morning when her daughter, Miss Tillie found her mother bleeding from her nose at 6 AM. She tried to stop the bleeding but her mother died quickly. She was born in Alsace Lorraine, Germany. In 1855 she came with her parents to this country to Detroit, Michigan where they lived for one year. They went to Ontonagon County, Michigan for a number of years. Twenty six years ago they moved to Lake Linden, which is still their home. Her husband died 10 years ago. Five children mourn her passing- Mrs. Will C. JOLBERET of Lake Linden; Mrs. A. E. ROWE of Butte, Montana; Miss Tillie and Will of Lake Linden and Fred of Calumet. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the home. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. 1905 March 8 Wednesday MARRIAGE- Joseph NADEAU of Houghton married Miss Bridget OWENS of Ripley, yesterday morning at St Patrick's church, Hancock. The bride was attended by Miss Mary LEADY of Lake Linden and the groom by William NADEAU of Negaunee, Marquette County, Michigan. They will reside in Houghton. Yesterday-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William ISAACSON of Toivola and Sarah KESKELA of Hancock 1905 March 9 Thursday DIED- Franz HAAKINEN, a Finnish miner, died in the Baltic mine Monday morning by falling rock crushing him. He leaves a wife and one child in Finland. The funeral was held Tuesday at the Atlantic Finnish church. Burial was at the Atlantic mine cemetery. NEWS ITEM- John TRETHEWEY of Beacon Hill left recently for Colorado to locate there. His family will join him in one week. DIED- Joseph VARNA, aged 85 years died at his home in Paradise, near Chassell last Saturday. He had lived at this location a number of years. The funeral was held Monday from St Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DIED- The funeral of the late Frank RASETTE, who died Sunday, at his Hancock home, will be held at St Joseph's church, Hancock, this morning. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock . DIED- James COWEN is dead at his home in Calumet, after a two weeks illness of pneumonia. He leaves a wife. He was an engineer in the employ of the Calumet and Hecla Mining company Funeral will be Sunday from his home. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 March 10 DIED- John G. McKERNAN, aged 83 years, died at his West Houghton home yesterday .The funeral will be from his home and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He was born in Little Brittian, New York 1823 January 10. In 1830 his parents moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan for 7 years, than went to Ontonagon County in 1848 and learned the carpenters trade and he moved to the Cliff mine in Keweenaw County. He moved to Houghton county in 1852. He was a state legislator for 10 years. He went to Baraga for 20 years as superintendent of the poor. He than went to Houghton till he died. NEWS ITEM- Samuel SAWL returned to Hurontown from CORNWALL, ENGLAND sooner than his friends expected. He left Hurontown in December. He is carpenter boss at the Isle Royale mine. 1905 March 11 Saturday DIED- The funeral of Mrs. John ROBARGE of Dollar Bay, who died Monday morning at her home near the coal docks was held Thursday. Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. She was married only 10 months and is survived by her husband . DIED- Mrs. Walter SCHLOCH died at her home in Laurium on Thursday after a short illness. She is survived by a husband and two children. The funeral took place last night at her home and burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 March 12 Sunday YESTERDAY-MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Oscar L. ROBERTS, aged 69 years, died at his Lake Linden home last night. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1835. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. George OPAL of the Mohawk mine location and a son, John of Lake Linden. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon from the Lake Linden Methodist church. Burial will be at the Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIED- Richard JAMES of Trimountain, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to the copper country in 1902, married Anna, daughter of Mrs. Joseph GREGORY at her mother's Lake Linden home yesterday evening. DIED- William Henry HOCKING, a miner employed at the Tamarack mine, was killed yesterday as he was caught between timbers. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of Thomas and Jane HOCKING and came to this area in 1898. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at the Tamarack Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. His cousins Harry and Emily LOBB came to the funeral, both born in CORNWALL He emigrated in 1889; she in 1890. NEWS ITEM- Robert GILBERT, of the Allouez mine location, Keweenaw county, who was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, left yesterday en route to Peru, South America, where he will locate in the future. He is one of the well known CORNISH writers of the county. He intends to work in the mines in the Andes Mountains. 1905 March 15 Wednesday DIED- Mrs. Mary McCARTHY, aged 48 years, wife of Dennis of Hancock, died last night at St Joseph's Hospital, Hancock from appendicitis. She was born in County Cork. Ireland and came to America when 18 years old. She spent most of her time in America in Hancock and married her husband when she was 20 years old. They have lived in the same house in Hancock since they were married. The following children are left to mourn her- Miss Catherine; William J; George D. and James all at home; her mother, aged 75 years; Dennis in Ireland; Miss Mary of Butte, Montana; Mrs. James SULLIVAN and Mrs. John O'LEARY both of Butte, Montana. The funeral will be Saturday morning at St Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton.. DIED- Nicholas KEMP, about 45 years old, died at the Laurium home of his sister, Mrs. Michael HANRAHAN, yesterday morning. He was single and had a wide circle of friends in Laurium. He has been employed in Laurium the past 7 years. DIED- John LEHTO, of Trimountain, aged 22 years, died yesterday at the Northern Michigan hospital. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the residence of Henry RENKI, of Centennial Heights. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 March 16 Thursday YESTERDAY -MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY THE HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Louis FISETTE of Dollar Bay and Georgearina DELEAU of Hancock. DIED- The funeral of the late Mrs. John LUOMA who died at her home in Ripley on Tuesday will be held this afternoon at the Hancock Finnish Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock . DIED- Word has been received in Calumet from Exeter, Nebraska, stating that Patrick DELANEY, a former resident of the copper country had died in Exeter after a short illness. He resided for years at the Franklin mine location. He leaves a wife and a large family. He has several relatives in this district- Mrs. Anthony COOK of Mohawk mine location; and Mrs. William FLYNN of Franklin mine location. NEWS ITEM- Sidney MARTIN, formerly in the employ of J. B. RASTELLO, tailor, has gone to Detroit, Michigan where he wil1 locate. PROBATE MATTER- In the matter of the estate of Flora BAUMGARTNER, deceased, Phillip G. BAUMGARTNER has asked the court to appoint him the administrator. 1905 March 17 NEWS ITEM- Thomas O'NEIL has resigned his position as copper country representative of Colliers Weekly and left yesterday afternoon from Calumet for Dayton, Minnesota. He will open a hardware store there. NEWS ITEM- Thomas RICHARDS of the Centennial Mine location has returned from CORNWALL, ENGLAND where he has visited friends and relatives for the past few months. DIED- Mrs. Agnes HIGGINS, aged 19 years wife of George William HIGGINS, of the Michigan Smelting works, has died Wednesday night at her home in Houghton, she was formerly of Dollar Bay. She was formerly Miss Agnes BROTHES of Skanee, Michigan and was married last October. She is survived by her husband, parents and 7 sisters. The remains will be brought to Lake Linden for the funeral at the Lake Linden Congregational church tomorrow and burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery. Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM-James CLARKE has arrived in Calumet and will take a position with the Dundee Woolen Mills Company. He was formerly a resident of Dundee, Scotland and is said to be an expert on the bagpipe. NEWS ITEM- Peter RABUZE has resigned his position at the Mohawk mine and left for Hibbing, Minnesota where he will locate permanently. NEWS ITEM- John TOMASZ and Steven DOBOS have resigned their positions with the Mohawk Mining company and will leave shortly for Chicago, Illinois where they will live. NEWS ITEM-Alfred HOPPER; Arthur PLANK; William RIPPER and George MAY have arrived here from Illinois and have accepted positions with the Mohawk Mining company. DIED-Narcisse RICARD, aged 62 years, died suddenly Thursday evening at Archie RUELLE's homestead, where he was employed. MARRIAGE- Otto RIEDERICH married Miss Augusta SCHONE last week by Justice JACKOLA at the Commercial Hotel in Calumet. 1905 March 22 Wednesday NEWS ITEM- Joe GREGORY a miner at the Trimountain mine was struck by an iron bar and his jaw was fractured. DIED- George BLEE, while at work underground at the Calumet and Hecla mine, died from a premature blast of blasting powder yesterday, was born in CORNWALL. ENGLAND and his partner, Wm MUTTON, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and emigrated in 1898, was injured. BLEE is married and is survived by a wife. Mr. BLEE is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George BLEE of Ishpeming, Michigan. He lived in Laurium and the funeral will be at the Laurium Methodist church on Friday afternoon, with services conducted by the CORNISH lodge of SONS OF ST GEORGE. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Mrs. Katherine TAMBERT, aged 57 years, died yesterday afternoon at her Calumet home. She is survived by 5 children- Joseph. Peter; John; Pauline and Mrs. FINEY of Laurium. The funeral will be held Thursday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIED- Dr F. W. McHUGH married Miss Maude WALLEN, both of Ewen, Michigan at Marquette, Marquette County at the Catholic church parsonage last Tuesday. DIED- Thomas HOOPER, aged 34 years, died at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock yesterday the same day he was admitted to the hospital. He had lived in Houghton all his life. He leaves no family. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the residence of his brother-in-law, John MAHON, in Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton.. His father will be at the funeral coming from Marquette. 1905 March 23 Thursday DIED- At the Princeton, Indiana Princeton Coal and Mining Company this afternoon 6 men are dead and four seriously injured as a result of an explosion in the mine. The dead are - Hudson WEATHERBY; Edmond GEISER; Albert GEISER; Harry TAGGART; William BIGGS and George DILL The injured are John DILL son of George; and William JONES. He fell from the bucket taking him to the surface and dropped to his death. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He emigrated to America in 1883. He has been married a short time. The funeral will take place at the Laurium Methodist church tomorrow. Burial will be at Lake Side cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Mr. and Mrs. William NEWTON and five children left Calumet yesterday for Croiwn Pointy, Indiana to live in the future. He was one of the fortunate investors in the bonanza mine and will take life easy in the future. 1905 March 25 Saturday NEWS ITEM- Mr. and Mrs. George THOMAS have arrived in Calumet from Bay City. Michigan to locate here for the future. He will work at the Tamarack mine. 1905 March 26 Sunday NEWS ITEM- Daniel ROWE and family will eave Kearsarge mine location in a few days for Springfield. Misssouri. He will work in the zinc mines of that city. 1905 March 28 Tuesday MARRIED- Rev Henry ROGERS of Hurontown, Houghton county married Miss Edid ROSS of Ironwood, Michigan in the Jessieville Methodist church at Ironwood, on Tuesday March 21st. They will live in Hurontown . NEWS ITEM- Charles BROWN will move his family from Ontonagon, Ontonagon County to Hurontown where he has secured work in the Isle Royale mine. NEWS ITEM- Gene FOUNTAINE and family of Quincy will leave next week for Missoula, Montana where they will make their future home. NEWS ITEM- Virgo COTINI and Bartholemew COTINI, two Italian men of the Franklin mine left Sunday night for their home in Italy. They will visit friends and relatives for a few months and return. DIED- Mrs. Catherine TAYLOR, aged 73 years, died at her home in Hancock yesterday after a 2 and one half year illness. She was born in County Derry, Ireland in 1832 and came to America in 1852 and settled in New Bedford, Massachussettes. She was married to Alexander TAYLOR in 1854 and they moved to Canada in 1861.They left the next year for Hancock at the Quincy mine till 1868 when they moved to Calumet to 1899 when she moved to Hancock till now, Her husband died 21 years ago. The funeral will be at the house on Wednesday and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 March 29 Wednesday DIED- Richard GRAY, aged 44 years, died at his home in Red Jacket yesterday morning . He was hurt in a mine accident at the Tamarack mine, injuring his spine last fall and never worked since. He lived in Red Jacket the past 5 years coming here from Houghton where he had worked 7 years, He was born in PENRYN, CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He first came to Winnipeg Canada from CORNWALL 14 years ago and stayed there two years before going to Houghton. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. BALES. The funeral wiII take place from the residence on Thursday afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 March 30 Thursday NEWS ITEM- George ROWE of the Baltic mine location returned from Calumet where he took his wife for treatment of her diabetes condition. DIED- Mrs. Margaret DUGGAN, aged about 73 years, died yesterday morning at her home in Hancock of heart trouble. She was born in Ireland and came to America over 50 years ago. She first came to Massachusstts for a few years than moved to Hancock till her death. She is survived by her husband; 3 daughters- Mrs. John MADIGAN of Ripley, Mrs. William VIAL of Quincy mine; Miss Bridget DUGGAN of Hancock .The funeral will be Friday from St. Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Joseph ELSTER, aged 73 years, a flagman, was killed yesterday by being struck by a switch railroad engine near the Calumet and Hecla supply office. He was born in Switzerland. He first came to Montreal, Canada and came to the Central mine 25 years ago and than to Calumet. He leaves a wife and 12 children -Alois; John; Antoine; Josephine; Gertrude; Elice; Mart; Estel; Theresa; Regina and Lena. The funeral will take place from Sacred Heart Catholic church on Saturday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM- Alfred NADEAU has resigned his position with the Mohawk Mining company and will leave shortly to go to Menominee, Michigan, where he will locate permanently. NEWS ITEM- John ROWE of Limerick, Quincy area .. born in CORWALL, ENGLAND, aged 28 years is on the sick list with an attack of rheumatism . 1905 April 1 Saturday DIED- Matt NEIMI, aged 24 years, a young man from Finland, single, was accidentally killed in the Quincy mine yesterday morning. He was riding on the ball of the skip and was somehow thrown off to his death. He came from Finland 3 months ago. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Hancock Finnish church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Mrs. Peter TEURA, aged 38 years, of the Boston mine location, died after a short illness. She leaves a husband, and 5 children. He will dispose of his property here in the meantime. DIED- Gussie Emma SIMMER, aged 22 years, daughter of Christopher SIMMER, died at the family residence in Hancock on Sunday night. She was born in Hancock and lived here all her life. Her mother, five brothers and three sisters survive her. The funeral will be tomorrow at the Hancock St Peter and St Paul's German church. A heavy door fell on his leg. NEWS ITEM- John and Edward CADWELL recently arrived from CORNW ALL, ENGLAND to the Atlantic mine and are the guests of James JOHNS. DIED-William SIMS, aged 27 years, formerly of Calumet was killed by being run over while uncoupling a locomotive in the yards of the Northern Pacific Railroad on Thursday in Duluth, Minnesota. The body arrived in Calumet yesterday and was taken to the home of Henry RADER of Osceola mine location. Tomorrow afternoon the funeral will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. Some years ago he was employed in the Calumet yards of the Hecla and Torch railroad. Three years ago he went to Duluth. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 April 11 Tuesday DIED-Edward CARLSON, aged about 25 years, single, a Swedish man who was run over by a Copper Range train, Friday afternoon, he died Saturday midnight at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock. He died of his injuries and pneumonia. He has no known relatives in this part of the country. He will be buried in Lakeside cemetery Hancock and the funeral will be Monday from the Hancock Swedish Lutheran church. In 1871 moved to America, arriving in Eagle River, Keweenaw County where she lived for 14 years. In 1899 the family moved to Houghton County to Lake Linden. For 3 years the family moved to Great Falls, Montana, where one of her daughter lives. Not liking the Western states they moved back to Beacon Hill on the lakeshore. DIED- John E. CAKE, aged 55 years, brother of Superintendent H. W. CAKE of the Calumet and Hecla mill, Lake Linden, died Thursday evening at his Lake Linden home of Bright's disease. He was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania 1850. He and his wife came to the Lake Superior district three years ago, locating in Lake Linden. He was a foreman at the Calumet and Hecla mill. He also has a bother, Walter in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He and his wife were married 32 years and his wife was paralyzed 10 years ago. The funeral will be held Sunday at the home and the burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED- Mrs. Margaret EAD, aged 72 years, died of old age, at her Lake Linden home Thursday night. She was born in Prussia, Germany. At age 14 years she came with her parents to America and settled in Southern Michigan. After a year she moved to Wisconsin, met and married Xavier EAD there. They then came to Lake Linden and lived 29 years till her death. Ten years ago her husband died in Lake Linden. She leaves three children, Frank; Mrs. Joseph SCHAWB and Mrs. Tony R. MILLER, all of Lake Linden. The funeral will be held Sunday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Lake Linden and burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. He died of lung trouble and had been sick with it since his return from Chicago, Illinois where he was employed as a stenographer. The remains were taken to the Catholic mission near Baraga, Baraga County on Friday and the burial took place yesterday. He leaves also three brothers and two sisters. The burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1905 April 18 Tuesday DIED- William GRADY, clerk at the Houghton Michigan House, died yesterday morning after a brief illness of pneumonia .The remains were sent to his former home in Grand Rapids, Michigan for burial. He leaves a son who lives with his grandmother in Grand Rapids. DIED- Charles MITKO, about 25 years old, a laborer working for a sewer contractor in Hancock, was killed by a trench collapsing on him. He started work Saturday for McDONALD's contractors. The body is being held till relatives can be located to pay for the burial. DIED- Mrs. Narcisse BRIERS, aged 69 years, died at her Lake Linden home on Saturday night of cancer. She was born in St Brazile, Quebec, Canada on 1836 August 21. In 1850 she with her family migrated to Lake Linden where she has lived till her death. She leaves a husband and six children- Mrs. N. FONTAINE of Hubbell; J. A. DEATH- WILLIAM GILLETTE, aged 27 years, died yesterday morning at his home in Laurium, after a lengthy illness. He worked a number of years for the Calumet and Hecla mining company as a miner. He had to leave work due to his health. His brother, Frank HAM set off the blast that killed his brother. The coroner's jury of Thomas BAWDEN; William PENPRASE; S. BUGHT; James HART; William COLENSO and John SIMMONS, brought in a verdict of accidental death. He is survived by a wife and three children.
