TRATHEN have returned to Calumet from Boise, Idaho where they have spent the past month with relatives. DEATHS 1904 September 1 Thursday- William SHELLMA N, of Calumet, aged 64 years, died yesterday of a rupture at the Northern Michigan hospital. He was born in Germany and immigrated to this country when a young man. He landed in Calumet when it was in its infancy and conducted a saloon 27 years ago. After a number of years here he spent 10 years in Minnesota, from there he went to West Superior, for 11 years. He came back to Calumet for his last 7 years. He leaves a wife and four daughters- Mrs. Herman SHELLMAN of Laurium; Mrs. Charles BLAIR and Miss Pauline SHELLMAN, both of West Superior, Wisconsin and Miss Lydia who is at home. The funeral will take place at the Hancock German Reformed church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1904 September 1 Thursday- John WEIS, aged 83 years, father of Joseph WEIS the postmaster of Hubbell, died Tuesday at his home in Hubbell. He was born in Germany 1821 May 12 and left Germany 1846 April 26 for the United States and landed at New York June 6. He went to Cincinnatti, Ohio till May 1847 when he went with John NOVENGANST and Adam GLASSEN to Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County. He worked at the Lac La Belle and the Mohawk mines for a time. He then spent 18 years working at Eagle River for John SENTER, now a resident of Houghton. He left Eagle River 20 years ago for Lake Linden and lived here till his death. His wife died two years ago on October 10. Fives sons and one daughter mourn him- Andrew of Great Falls, Montana; Adam of British Columbia, Canada; John; Joseph and Jacob, all 3 of Hubbell and Mrs. Michael MOORE of Butte, Montana. The funeral will be held tomorrow from St Cecelia's church, Lake Linden. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE 1904 September 2 Friday- Frank VOSS married Miss Bertha HERMES, daughter of Mr.. and Mrs. Englebert HERMES, of West Hancock, Wednesday morning at St Joseph's church, Hancock. The bridesmaid was Miss Theresa HERMES, the bride's sister and the best man was Frank HENNECKE of Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM 1904 September 2 Friday- Miss Kate GOLDSWORTHY will leave Hancock tomorrow for Two Harbors, Michigan where she will teach school. DEATHS 1904 September 2 Friday- John A. REED and Andrew GREGORICH, timber men in the Tamarack mine, were instantly killed by falling ground in the mine yesterday. Mr. GREGORICH has been employed with the mine for many years and was single, boarding at Tamarack. His funeral will be held Sunday from the Calumet Croatian church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery. Mr. REED, aged 46 years, had resided in Calumet for many years. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of John REED and Sarah DANIELL. His funeral will be at the Tamarack Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM 1904 September 2 Friday- William GRAPE has left Calumet for Estalene, South Dakota, where he will make his future home. DEATHS 1904 September 3 Saturday-Mrs. Breda ALLEN, aged 61 years, died yesterday morning at her home in Hancock of cancer. She is survived by a husband, Gustav ALLEN, and an adopted daughter, May. She was born in Finland. She has been a resident of Hancock eight years, having married Mr. ALLEN in Calumet and coming to Hancock at once. She was married prior to her marriage with Mr. ALLEN. The funeral will take place Monday afternoon at the Swedish Lutheran church of Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery Hancock. 1904 September 3 Saturday- John OLSON, aged 75 years, died by cutting his throat at his home in Pequaming on Monday. He was in the employ of HEBARD and Sons for many years. He was born in Sweden. He leaves a wife and seven grown children. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1904 September 13 Tuesday- Mrs. Victoria LAVEIGNE, aged 42 years, wife of Alfonso LAVEIGNE owner of the Lakeview House of Ontonagon, Ontonagon County, Michigan, died Sunday in St Mary's Hospital, in Chicago, Illinois. She died after an operation. The remains were taken from Chicago directly to Glentily, Canada, her former home where she was buried. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, 18 months old and two brothers- Telefor of Ontonagon and Oliver of Canada. 1904 September 13 Tuesday- Richard BONEY, aged 59 years, a pioneer of the Atlantic mine location for the past 24 years died yesterday morning. DEATH 1904 September 15 Thursday- William B. HARRIS, aged 80 years, one of the oldest settlers in Lake Linden died at his home. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1824 and came to this country about 50 years ago, settling in Ontonagon County, where he engaged in mining. He then went to the Central mine in Keweenaw County for several years, moving to the old Hancock mine then moved to the Franklin Junior mine. After that he moved to Calumet and Hecla mine and stayed there quite a few years. He got tired of underground work and moved his family to Lake Linden and for 14 years worked at the stamp mills there. He wanted to work outdoors in his later years and bought a farm outside of Lake Linden and lived there till his death. His wife died about two months ago. Seven children are left to mourn him- William C. in South Dakota; John of Montana; Joseph, whereabouts unknown; Mrs. George SMITH of Lake Linden; Mrs. David MERCIER of Livingston, Montana; Mrs. William Parks and Samuel, both living at home. The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Lake Linden Methodist church and burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. He and his wife came to Hancock 40 years ago from CORNWALL, ENGLAND, he was the son of Samuel UREN and Elizabeth CHAPPLE; the place of their births, and lived here ever since. He had been a miner at the Quincy mining company for many years but the last 10 years worked for the Mineral Range Railroad. He is survived only by his widow. DIED- Mrs. Salma Augusta ERICKSON, aged 40 years, died Friday afternoon, at her home in Laurium of Bright's disease. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon from the Laurium Swedish Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1904 September 20 Tuesday DIED- Benjamin BARRETT, aged 41 years, died Friday evening at his home in Baltic of consumption, that he contracted while in the mines of Africa a year ago. He was born in REDRUTH, CORNWALL, ENGLAND; the son of John BARRETT and Anna PRINCE - Shortly after his marriage in CORNWALL he went to Africa where he remained five years. He returned to CORNWALL for a short time then he came to the copper country with his wife. He worked at the Tamarack, Pequaming and Baltic mines, in that order. He is survived by a wife and three children; a brother -William, also of Baltic; and a sister, Mrs. NICHOLS at Tamarack. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon from the home. RICHARDS of Beacon Hill married Miss Annie COLLICK of GOLDSITHNEY, CORNWALL, ENGLAND on Saturday evening at the Beacon Hill Congregational church. The bride was supported by Miss Beiis RICHARDS of the Isle Royale mine and the groom by Joseph MARTIN of Beacon Hill. The bride was given away by William PIPER, her uncle of Quincy Hill. They will live at Beacon Hill where the groom has a position at the Trimountain Mill. DIED-- Capt Samuel BENNETTS, aged 74, a widower, died at his home in Laurium. He was born in CAMBORNE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to this country from his native land in 1854, settling in Keweenaw County. He worked as a miner at the Cliff mine till 1861 and at that time was made Mine Captain. He than went to Pittsburgh and Lake Superior Mine, Marquette County as Captain for 18 months. He moved to the Allouez mine, Keweenaw county as Captain until 1872 when he went to the Central mine in the same county.. He stayed there till 1894 when it closed. He then retired to Laurium and retired from active life. He was married in 1852 to Miss Grace THOMAS, also a native of Cornwall. She died on 1900 May 11 at Laurium. He is survived by 4 sons and 5 daughters- William H. BENNETTS of Laurium; Samuel BENNETTS of Tamarack; Frank BENNETTS of Calumet; John BENNETTS of Beacon Hill; Mrs. David RULE of the Central mine; Mrs. Thomas MITCHELL of Trimountain; Mrs. E. T. DUAME of Laurium; and Misses Kate and Annie BENNETTS of Laurium. The funeral will take place at the Laurium Methodist church this afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DIED- Thomas GULBORD, Sr. aged 68 years, died Sunday morning at his home in Lake Linden of Bright's disease. He was born in Canada and came to this country several years ago and settled in Keweenaw county. From there he moved to 1884, with his family, to Lake Linden and lived here till his death. He was a carpenter at the Calumet and Hecla Mill in Lake Linden. He leaves a widow and 14 children, living here. The funeral will be this morning at St Joseph's church, Lake Linden. They will live in South Range. NEWS ITEM- William TROON and children of Trimountain left Wednesday for CORNWALL, ENGLAND to remain permanently. DIED- The funeral of the late Mrs. Julia McMAHON of Franklin will be held tomorrow morning from St Patrick's Catholic church, Hancock. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. Her son, Tom McMAHON arrived from Butte, Montana to attend the funeral. DIED- Hassen MANSOUR, aged 27 years, Syrian peddler, was drowned in Portage Lake Canal yesterday while attempting to cross the canal in a small boat. He and his brother, Hesis, made a business of pack peddling among the farmers in Houghton county. They had reached the life saving station at the canal and asked that they be taken across the canal. A Surfman from the station, William J. JOHNSON agreed to take them. When they got to the other side of the canal, Hasen was getting out of the boat with a heavy pack in his arms and fell into the lake and drowned before help could get to him. Hesis, the brother, went into the water and JOHNSON saved him from drowning. Being a Mohammedan there will be a religious funeral from his house. There was no priest available so a friend conducted the funeral according to the Koran. They sat on the floor, tailor fashion, alternately singing, praying and moaning. A few days ago he was taken ill and placed in a hotel in Ontonagon, when he didn't get better it was decided to send him to the hospital in Hancock. He was single and leaves his mother; and sister at his home in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin His body will be shipped to Wauwatosa for burial. DIED- PETER O'BRIEN, a former resident of Hancock, died in Bisbee, Arizona this week due to a mine accident. He was born in Ireland and spent the greater part of his life in the copper country., residing in Hancock and the vicinity. He left over a year ago to work in the Copper Queen mine in Bisbee. He is survived by sons- Patrick and Peter of Hancock; Michael; Jerry and William of Duluth, Minnesota and John of Butte, Minnesota. DIED- Joseph RAUTIO, aged 64 years, residing on a farm near Osceola, died Thursday after an illness of five days. He came to the copper country from Finland about 32 years ago and lived in Calumet all that time. He was in Calumet from its infancy and saw it grow to its large size now. Burial will be at the old Protestant cemetery, Hancock. DIED-Rev Anthony J. PEDERSON, aged 31 years, died at the parsonage of the Calumet Norwegian church Sunday morning from tuberculosis. He was born in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota 1873 October 24. He graduated from the Lutheran Normal School at Madison, Minnesota in 1896. He went to Carlsbad, New Mexico for his health and returned to his home at Hanley Falls, Minnesota and than came to Calumet where he finally died. He leaves a wife and two children, (the youngest was born the day his father died), his parents at Hanley Falls; five sisters and three brothers. NEWS ITEM- Miss Henrietta PETERS came to Calumet, a few weeks ago, from her home in CORNWALL, ENGLAND to marry Joseph BIDDICK., who she knew in CORNWALL. The marriage took place Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert HAYNES of Calumet. The bride was attended by Miss Leah MITCHELL and the groom was attended by Robert HAYNES. They will reside in Calumet. DIED-William SIMMONS, aged 42 years, born in Calumet, died at his home in Butte, Montana, this past week where he had gone 10 years ago. He was employed at the Calumet and Hecla mining company. He is survived by his wife and 2 grown children. Also a sister, Mrs. Annie CARTER of Red Jacket. He was the son -in-law of Samuel SATTERLEY of Calumet. The funeral will be at Butte. MARRIAGE- Charles BOURRET married Miss Edith TOUPIN, both residents of Tamarack City, yesterday morning at St Cecelia's church, Hubbell. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Vina TOUPIN and the best man was Theodore LENZ. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ovide TOUPIN, of Tamarack. They will reside in Tamarack City. Also George PIPINCH has left Calumet to go to Austria for a few months visit. 1904 October 19 Wednesday DIED- John REAGAN's funeral was held yesterday morning from St Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial was at the old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. He died Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James BURT in Hancock. The whereabouts of his son is not known. DIED- Mrs. Kate KANGAS, aged 33 years, wife of Samuel KANGAS , died at her Hancock home yesterday morning from consumption. She is survived by her husband and two children. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Hancock Finnish Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Michael MARABICH, aged about 30 years, a trammer at the Tamarack mine shaft No 2, died at midnight Tuesday by falling rock, crushing him. He was a married man, Austrian, and lived at the boarding house of Samuel MIHELICK in Calumet. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Calumet Austrian church. DIED- Mrs. Ella KRAHAS, aged 36 years, wife of Henry KRAHAS, died Monday morning at her home in Hecla from lung trouble. She is survived by her husband and three children. DIED- Mrs. Katherine PETERS, a former resident of Hancock, died at Lead, South Dakota on October 5 of erysipelas. Katherine GOODMAN, was born in Boltonville, Wisconsin and moved to Hancock at the age of 3 years, where she lived to 1880 and then moved to the Hills of Lead. .She married Joseph PETERS 1882 September 4. He survives her, as well as four children. She also leaves two brothers -Thomas of Lead and James of Arizona and three sisters- Mrs. A. J. FURLONG of Lead; Mrs. J. C. DIED -Matthew McCONNELL, aged 50 years, died at his home in East Houghton of heart failure yesterday morning. He was born in Ohio and as a boy came to Marquette, Marquette County where he engaged in railroad work. He was a conductor on the first train that ran into the copper country and he worked that route for 20 years, retiring 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Miss Grace and a son, Warren and a brother, Bert of Iron Mountain. Burial will be at the Hecla cemetery. 1904 October 23 Sunday DIED- Mrs. Mary Ann HEBBARD, aged 80 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. COLLINS at Hubbell on Friday evening due to old age. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND 1824 September 19, the daughter of Peter KNIGHT and Martha TRELOAR.She came to this country from her native land in 1886 and for a time located in the Central Mine, Keweenaw County. From there she moved in with her daughter, Mrs. J. COLLINS for the past several months. She leaves 4 sons and two daughters- Samuel of Osceola; James in CORNWALL, Alfred of Marquette County and John of Hubbell; Mrs. R. STODDEEN and Mrs. J. COLLINS, both of Hubbell. MARRIAGE- Frank GARTREL married Miss Anna ELLIS, both of Atlantic, the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John ELLIS, Sr of Atlantic and the marriage was at the home of the bride's parents, on Saturday evening. The bride was supported by Miss Grace STRATTON and James ELLIS was the best man. DIED- Mrs. Barbara SCHNEIDER, aged 85 years and a resident of Hancock since 1850, died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John SCHELLMAN of West Houghton. Death was due to old age. She was a sister of the late Mrs. Henry DRITTLER, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, and a brother, William MERTZ of Hancock.She was born in Wurtenburg, Germany and came to this country with her husband who has been dead many years. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the Hancock's St Peter and Paul's German Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGE- Alfred MILFORD married Miss Nellie BLIGHT, both of Quincy Hill Saturday night at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard BLIGHT of Quincy Hill. They will live on Quincy Hill as the groom is employed at the Quincy mine. DIED-Rudolph SCHRODER, aged 74 years, of Lake Linden, died of cancer at St Joseph's hospital in Hancock Sunday night. He was born in Preuzelen, Germany 1830 December 10 and came to America in 1858 and came to Lake Linden shortly after his arrival. He entered the employ of the Calumet and Hecla Mills at Lake Linden and worked for them a great number of years in various positions. He was single and leaves a sister and a nephew in Duluth, Minnesota. The sister is too old to travel. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the morgue and the burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. DIED-Benjamin POLLARD, aged 51 years, of North Tamarack, died at his home after an illness of 8 months from a complication of diseases. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of William POLLARD and Elizabeth OATES, and came to Pennsylvania from CORNWALL, where he was employed in the mines for a number of years. He came to the copper country 25 years ago and worked in various mines. He is survived by a wife and four children -Mrs. Henry TEDO of Centennial Heights; William J.; John H. and Lillian POLLARD. DIED- George H. KARKEET, aged 57 years, died at Goldfield, Colorado, this past week. He was born in Rockland, Ontonagon County, Michigan. He was quite well known in Calumet. His only son died a month ago. He is survived by one daughter, Miss Jessie KARKEET; two sisters and four brothers- Mrs. John KEVERNE of Raymbaultown; Mrs. Edward LEONHARDT of Menominee, Michigan; John H. of Iron Mountain, Michigan; Richard of Commonwealth, Wisconsin; Thomas W. of Calumet and Mr. Z.W. of Virginia, Minnesota. Burial will be in Colorado. DIED-Mrs. Abe ROBERTS, aged 31 years, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. BENNETT of Yelverton, Devonshire, England of inflammatory rheumatism which affected her heart. She was born in Northumberland, England. She had lived in Calumet for 17 years. She leaves besides her husband and parents, 5 young children; and 5 brothers and sisters- Mrs. Frank ROBERTS of Virginia; Mrs. Richard JORY of Calumet; John R. of Yelverton; Devon, formerly of Calumet; and Richard and J. H. BENNETT both of Calumet. On the advice of her doctor she went to her home in Devon for her health and died there. DEATH -James RABEY, aged 64 years, widower, died at his home in Calumet after an illness of two weeks of heart trouble Thursday morning. He was born at TWELVE HEADS, near CHACEWATER, CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of Joseph RABEY and Mary SCOBELL and came to America in 1864 to Ontonagon County. After a stay of 4 years he went to Lake Linden and stayed for 2 years and spent the rest of his life in Calumet. He was a stationary engineer at the Calumet and Hecla mine most of his life. He saw Calumet grow up from its infancy and there was nothing much in Calumet at that time. He leaves five children- Albert; Benjamin; Joseph and Misses Annie and Geneva; also a brother William of Lake Linden. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the Calumet Methodist church. He lived in the copper country since 1865. The funeral will be tomorrow from St Joseph's church, Hancock. Burial at the old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. DIED- Robert HARRY, aged 70 years, one of the pioneer residents of the copper country, died at his home in Laurium of paralysis last night. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of Thomas HARRY and Elizabeth EDWARDS. He came to America in 1874, landing in Pennsylvania where he spent two years. He moved to the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County from there, then after two years to the Osceola mine, Houghton County. He had been a miner in the various mines, mainly in the Calumet and Hecla mine. He leaves a wife, with three children at home and Mrs. LANGFORD in Missouri. The funeral will be from the Calumet Methodist church Monday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet.
