BROWN of Matchwood, Michigan married Miss Elizabeth BRETHLEN, at the home of Mr and Mrs D. J.REYNOLDS, at Sidnaw, Michigan on Friday evening. The groom is the son of Postmaster and Mrs Jerome BROWN of Matchwood. They will live in Ewen, Michigan. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 3 Tuesday- James ALLEN left Calumet Saturday afternoon for Assinnabota, Alberta, Northwest Territory, Canada where he will locate on a ranch he has bought. He was a member of the Calumet and Hecla band. DEATH 1904 May 3 Tuesday-Word was received in Houghton yesterday of the death of Mrs Harry HOOPER, aged 70 years, at Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan. She formerly lived in Houghton for 40 years, moving to Marquette 2 years ago. She is survived by her husband and four children- Mrs John MAHON of Houghton; Mrs Charles ROBERTS of Marquette; Harry HOOPER of St Paul, Minnesota and Thomas HOOPER of Houghton. The remains will arrive in Houghton this evening. The funeral service will be Wednesday afternoon at Grace Methodist church. Burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. DEATHS 1904 May 4 Wednesday- Mrs James P. KELLY, aged 34 years, wife of the well known Houghton contractor, died Monday evening at her Houghton home. She is survived by her husband and three children. The funeral will take place Friday morning at St Ignatius church Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1904 May 5 Thursday- John PERANEN, aged 35 years, employed at the Menard shaft of the Quincy mine, died instantly by the falling of a skip in the mine yesterday morning. He leaves a widow and lived at the Menard mine location. The funeral was held at the Hancock Lutheran church yesterday afternoon. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGE 1904 May 5 Thursday- Steve TURK married Miss Pauline JOSEPHINA of Raymbaultown, at St Joseph's Austrian church yesterday morning. DEATHS 1904 May 5 Thursday- Mrs Warner SJOBLOM, aged 24 years, of Centennial Heights, died Tuesday evening. She is survived by her husband and one child. The funeral service will be this morning at the Finnish church on Pine Street. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1904 May 6 Friday- The funeral of the late David BUSSIER of Ripley, was held yesterday from St Joseph's church, Hancock and he was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1904 May 6-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Abram TUNBERG and Aina STORVIS of Calumet DEATH 1904 May 7 Saturday- Michael DWYER, aged 60 years, a pioneer resident of Calumet, died yesterday morning at his home in Newton of pneumonia. He had been a resident of Calumet the past 30 years and had been employed continuously at the Calumet and Hecla mine. He is survived by his wife and seven children- Mrs Mary O'NEIL; Misses Delia; Fora; Lizzie DWYER and Messrs Timothy; Michael and William DWYER. The funeral will be from Sacred Heart church, Calumet on Monday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 7 Saturday- Mr and Mrs William JOHNSON and family left Calumet yesterday for Rudyard, Michigan to take up farming. DEATH 1904 May 8 Sunday- Mrs Hannah SHANAHAN, aged 75 years, of Franklin mine location, died Friday morning at her home. She was a resident of the copper country a long time. Five sons survive her. The funeral takes place tomorrow morning from St Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial will be at the old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEMS 1904 May 8 Sunday- Henry VASTANEN of Laurium, left Friday for Telluride, Colorado, to take up work in one of the mines. 1904 May 8 Sunday- John YANGALA of Calumet sold his property and expects to leave in a few days for Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he will reside in the furure. DEATHS 1904 May 8 Sunday- The funeral services of William RICKARD, who died Thursday at his home at the Mohawk mine location, will be held today at the Mohawk. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1904 May 10- Mrs Charlotte ERICSON, aged 34 years, of Red Jacket shaft mine location, died yesterday morning at the Calumet and Hecla hospital of gangrene. She is survived by her husband, Richard and six children. The funeral will be held at the Calumet Norwegian church on Wednesday morning. DEATH 1904 May 15 Sunday- Mrs Ida HOLMES, aged 30 years, died Friday at her home in West Houghton of tuberculosis. She is survived by her husband, John E. and three children. The funeral will take place this afternoon from Grace Methodist church, Houghton. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 15 Sunday- James OPIE expects to leave HUBBLE about June 15 to visit his old home in CORNWALL, ENGLAND for two months. DEATHS 1904 May 15 Sunday- Ralph MAMULA, aged about 23 years, a timberman in the Trimountain mine, was found dead at the 7th level of the mine Friday afternoon by his partner. He died of heart failure. He was born in Austria and his fellow Austrians will take care of the funeral. The funeral services will be at the Atlantic Catholic church today. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1904 May 17 Tuesday- The funeral of Selma BUKONEN, who died Saturday at her home in Elbowtown, took place yesterday from the Hancock Finnish Lutheran church. Burial was at the Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 17 Tuesday-Walter JACHNIG returned Sunday to Calumet from Ashantee, West Africa, where for the past year he has been employed as a clerk for the Vivinal Gold Fields Company. He returned in good physical condition and has lots of stories to tell of his experiences. He will probably stay in the copper country. He was 37 days making his journey from Africa to Calumet. DEATH 1904 May 17 Tuesday- William H. DANIELL, aged 72 years, who for the past 30 years has been a resident of the Lake Superior country, died at his home in Calumet -He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to America at the age of 22 years. He has been employed continuously in the mines in the lake district. He is survived by one daughter- Mrs George ROWE of Calumet and three sons- William H. of Great Falls, Montana: Charles W. and Josh, both of Salt Lake City, Utah. The funeral services will be held today under the auspices of the Salvation Army at Calumet. The services were those similar to the ones in CORNWALL. The burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. He was an old resident of Schoolcraft township, having lived there over 28 years. He settled on a farm where he had his home 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife and three sons. The funeral will be this afternoon from his home. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. They will live in Calumet. 1904 May 19 Thursday- Mat URICH married Miss Rosalla KRAJACIC, both of Calumet, yesterday morning at St Anthony's Austrian church, Calumet. Miss Margaret STANESINIC was the bridesmaid and the best man was Martin TOMEC. DEATH 1904 May 20 Friday- Henry JOHNSON, aged 60 years, was killed in the Osceola mine Wednesday afternoon by a large piece of rock falling on him. He had been a resident of Calumet the last 32 years. He is survived by his wife and 4sons. The funeral will be Saturday from his home and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATH 1904 May 20 Friday- Arvid VAARA, aged 30 years, a miner employed at the Quincy mine, died yesterday morning of tuberculosis. He was unmarried. The funeral will be at the West Hancock Lutheran church, tomorrow. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 20 Friday- Joseph ROUCHARD of the Trimountain mine location, left Tuesday for Alberta, Canada, where he will locate permanently on a farm. DEATHS 1904 May 20 Friday-Joseph BLOCK, Sr , aged 73 years, died Wednesday evening at his home in Houghton of pneumonia. He was one of the oldest residents in the copper country. He was born in Bohemia, Germany in 1832 and came to Houghton in 1865. He has made his home here ever since. He leaves six sons and one daughter- Joseph, John: Anthony and Lewis all of Houghton; Frank of Murmray, Utah; George of Globe, Arizona and Mrs Samuel S. ROBINSON of Lake Linden. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon from his home. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery. 1904 May 21 Saturday- James JEFFERY, engineer on one of two Mineral Range trains that collided, was killed yesterday afternoon when he jumped from his engine and it turned over onto him in Allouez Township, Keweenaw County. He lived at Osceola and was married. The funeral was at the Osceola Methodist church on Saturday afternoon. 1904 May 21 Saturday-Andrew LARSON, aged 30 years, well known among the Finnish residents of Hancock, died at his home in West Hancock, yesterday morning of consumption. He leaves a wife and two children. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the West Hancock Finnish Lutheran church. The burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 21 Saturday- Mrs Jennie TUNNISON, formerly matron of the Houghton County detention center, is now located in Bisbee, Arizona, where she is nursing the miners at the Copper Queen mine. DEATH 1904 May 22 Sunday-William HIGGINS, aged 69 years, an old resident of Calumet, died yesterday afternoon at his Calumet home of bronchial infection. He is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mrs SINCOCK. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at the Calumet Methodist church. The funeral will be held Friday at the Allouez mine location and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM 1904 May 25 Wednesday- Mr and Mrs James MILLS of Lake Linden, will leave today for a three months visit to their old home in REDRUTH , CORNWALL, ENGLAND. They have been absent from the old country for 31 years. MARRIAGE 1904 May 25 Wednesday- Thomas NOLAN of Baraga, Baraga County, Michigan married Miss Agnes GARBAREK of Laurium yesterday morning at St Anthony s Polish church, Calumet. DEATHS 1904 May 25 Wednesday- Helena PLUVA, aged 33 years, died Monday afternoon at her home in Calumet. She is survived by her husband, Edward and an infant child. The funeral will take place at the Finnish church on Pine Street, Calumet, this afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1904 May 26- Thursday- Mrs Margaret Jane CURNOW, aged 61, a widow of John CURNOW, for many years a resident of Hancock, died yesterday morning at her Hancock home after a long illness. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, 1842 August 31, the daughter of John WHITE. Her husband died in Hancock 11 years ago. She married in 1865 in CORNWALL and the couple came to America to the copper country in 1869. They spent most of the time at the Pewabic mine. John died of miners consumption at the Pewabic mine location 1893 May 24. She is survived by 5 children, William and Thomas of Hancock, John J. of Greenland, Ontonagon County; Mrs Joseph CROCKER of South Kearsarge and Mrs Isaac TRUSCOTT of Hacock. The funeral will take place from the Hancock Methodist church on Sunday afternoon. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock, she will be placed next to her husband. Another brother Thomas WHITE was killed in a Hancock smelting works, 1889 July 24. DEATHS 1904 May 26 Thursday- Miss Catherine SCHAACK, aged 60 years, died yesterday morning at the Lake Linden home of her sister, Mrs John PIEFFER, after a lingering illness. She had lived in Lake Linden about 20 years. She was born in Luxemburg, but spent the greater part of her life in this country. She had two surviving sisters and two brothers- Mrs John PIEFFER and Mrs J. N. BAER; Jacob SCHAACK and one brother on the Chicago police force; all live in Chicago, Illinois. He came to Calumet last fall from ST ERTH, CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of Jabez GEORGE and Ann STEPHENS. He had been employed in the mine a short time. He leaves his parents and a brother in CORNWALL. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the Calumet Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1904 June 3 Friday-Eldred LAWSON of Laurium married Miss Mae WARBLER, daughter of Henry WARBLER of Laurium yesterday at Christ Episcopal church. The bridesmaid was Miss Florence LAWSON, sister of the groom and the best man was Mr Evelyn CARTER. DEATHS 1904 June 4Saturday- Asa SPRUCE, aged 64 years, died at the L'Anse, Baraga County Methodist Mission, last week Friday of consumption. He was one of the oldest Indian settlers in these parts. The funeral was held Decoration Day. 1904 June 4 Saturday- Mrs Keturah CARAH, aged 69 years, wife of George CARAH of West Houghton, died yesterday morning at her home in Houghton. She was a pioneer resident of Houghton County, having lived here the past 39 years. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the daughter of John and Keturah PEARCE, in 1835 and was married there. She joined her husband in the copper country in 1865 and after living at the Franklin mine some years, the family moved to Houghton 30 years ago and stayed there. The funeral will be held at Grace Methodist church, Houghton and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. She is survived by her husband, George and these children- Mrs Mary A. CHUBB of Painesdale; Mrs L. A. STEVENS of Hancock; Miss Bessie CARAH; and Messrs George H. and Will J., all 3 of Houghton. POLGLASE of Laurium and Mrs George GETTRILL of Houghton; also two brothers- John PEARCE of New Jersey and Emmanuel PEARCE of LeMars, Iowa. 1904 June 4 Saturday- Joseph PELKEY of the Wolverine mine location, received a telegram yesterday announcing the death of his father, Xavier PELKEY, aged 68 years, at Thompsonville, Connecticut of heart failure. Mr PELKEY was a resident of the copper country until about 8 years ago. He lived for a good many years at the Franklin mine location. He left the copper country in 1896. He is survived by seven children- Mrs Joseph ROSSI of Chassell; Miss Minnie PELKEY of Connecticut; Joseph of the Wolverine mine; Napoleon of the Phoenix mine. In Keweenaw county: William; Frank and Millie who lived with their father at Thompsonville. 1904 June 4 Saturady- John RICHARDS, aged 58, a pioneer resident of Calumet, died at his Calumet home of a complication of diseases. He is survived by a wife and several children, 5 of which live in Chicago, Illinois. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of John RICHARDS. He came to the copper country in 1871 and worked all the time for the Calumet and Hecla mining company. DEATH 1904 June 11 Saturday- Dr James HOSKING, aged 37 years, died Wednesday night at his home in the Wolverine mine location, of hemorrhage of the brain, caused by the fracture of his brain by a runaway horse last Friday morning. He was born at the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County 1867 October 17. He graduated from the Hancock high school and the University of Michigan to become a doctor. In 1892 he was the Physician for the Allouez and Wolverine mines. He and 4 companions, Peter PITTALA; Jacob ITALA; Thomas TIPPETT and Victor JOHNSON, went to the dam for a swim and the others did not realize Mr THOMAS was in any trouble. He was 20 years old and had been in Calumet for 20 months. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. Twelve years ago his father drowned in the Wheal Owles mine in CORNWALL. He was a brother of William THOMAS of the Osceola mine. JONES, aged 40 years, cashier of the First National Bank of Lake Linden, died at his Lake Linden home of pleurisy yesterday morning. He was born at Hazel Green, Grant County, Wisconsin on 1864 March 3. At age 4 years he came to Hancock, with his parents. After graduating from the Hancock high school, he began working at the First National Bank of Hancock. He became head bookkeeper there and went to the Lake Linden Bank in 1889. On 1892 March 13 he married Miss Belle McINTYRE, daughter of the late Allan McINTYRE. He is survived by his wife and four children- Allan James, aged 5 years; Margaret Sarah, aged 6 years; Anna Belle, aged 4 years and Luella 22 months old. His father is still living. His mother and family will leave Tuesday for the same place. DEATH 1904 June 25 Saturday- Carlos Douglass SHELDON, aged 64 years, died yesterday morning at his home in West Houghton of apoplexy. His history began with the beginning of Houghton, coming here at the age of 7 years, with his father, the late Ransom SHELDON. He was born 1840 June 10 at Walworth County, Wisconsin. He was one of three sons who survived his fathers death in 1878, they are George C. now deceased; Ransom Bird SHELDON of Riverside, California and Carlos. Ransom is the only surviving of the family. He worked in the drug business for 6 years, than became manager of the Portage Lake Foundry, a position he held 18 years. He became superintendent of the SHELDON-SHAFEDR Iron Company, which operated the Crystal Falls Iron Company. After 4 years he returned to Houghton to take over the executor of his fathers estate and did this till he died. His first wife was Mary E. SKIFF, daughter of George and Eliza SKIFF of Willoughby, Ohio in 1865 and his second wife was Mrs Sallie W. GARDNER, daughter of Mr and Mrs John DASHIELL of Princess Anne, Maryland in 1888 .He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters- Miss Nellie GARDNER of Houghton and Mrs John D. RYAN of Butte, Montana. The funeral services will be held at his home tomorrow. DEATH 1904 June 29 Wednesday- Andrew BLOM, aged 54 years, died at the Calumet and Hecla hospital Monday night of spinal trouble. He was born in Sweden in 1850, and came to Calumet in 1878. He went to work for the Calumet and Hecla Mining company until recently, due to his ill health. He is survived by a wife, 8 children and 2 brothers. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the Calumet Norwegian Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1904 June 29 Wednesday- Joseph LAMOT married Miss Anna BRULE, both of Calumet, yesterday morning at St Anthony's Austrian church in Calumet. DEATH 1904 June 29 Wednesday- Arthur VIVIAN, aged 20 years, was instantly killed at the new Lake Linden Calumet and Hecla Stamp mill. His clothing got caught in a set screw attached to a pulley. He was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Thomas VIVIAN, who survive him. He was the sole support of his parents, as his father is blind from work 8 years ago.
