She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to America in 1838. She came to the copper country in 1854. She is survived by her husband, Thomas SMITH; her son John SLOCKETT; her daughter-Mrs Mry BRIGGS and her sister, Anna, all live in Houghton. She was one of the oldest residents of Houghton. The funeral will take place on Wednesday from her sister’s home, Mrs PEMBY and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1903 September 2 Wednesday- The funeral of Joseph BEARNS, the Civil War veteran who died last Monday morning at St Joseph’s hospital, Hancock, will be held this afternoon from St Joseph’s Catholic church, Hancock. The burial will be at the Old Catholic cemetery. 1903 September 2 Wednesday- Mrs Timothy SULLIVAN, aged 45 years, died at her home in South Lake Linden yesterday morning, of heart failure. She was a resident of South Lake Linden for a number of years. She is survived by her husband; and a daughter-Mrs Henry SMITH of South Lake Linden; and a son-Eugene SULLIVAN of Isle Royale mills. Also there are a number of younger children to mourn her death. The funeral will be from St Cecelia’s church, Lake Linden tomorrow. Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE 1903 September 2 Wednesday- Louis SEWNIG of Logansport, Indiana married Miss Pauline KAISER, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob KAISER of Calumet, yesterday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet. The bride was attended by Miss Annie SEWNIG of Logansport, sister of the groom and Elizabeth YOST of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The groom was attended by N. F. KAISER and George MAHONEY. They will reside in Logansport. The groom worked a year in Calumet and met the bride than. DEATH 1903 September 2 Wednesday- Mrs Ellen O’CONNOR, aged 66 years, died yesterday afternoon at her home in Laurium . She died after an operation last MOnday. She leaves three daughters, with whom she lived, Anna ; Margaret and Ellen . Also two married daughters- Mrs Charles MUGFORD of Laurium and Mrs Joe STRUCK of Mohawk. DEATH 1903 September 4 Friday- Mrs Julia MATSON, wife of John MATSON of Winona, died yesterday morning at her home of tuberculosis. She is survived by her husband and two children.A brother, Erick ERICKSON also survives her. The funeral will be held this morning from the Hancock Swedish Lutheran church . NEWS ITEM 1903 September 4 Friday--John ROWE of the Phoenix mine location Keweenaw County, was in Calumet yesterday on his way to Butte, Montana, where he intends to reside in the future. DEATH 1903 September 4 Friday- John W. VIVIAN, aged 28 years, died at his home yesterday at Tamarack. He leaves a wife and two children. The funeral will take place on Sunday. MARRIAGES 1903 September 5 Saturday- Lawrence R. MURPHY, a prominent attortney of Madison, Wisconsin married Miss Besssie BRADY, daughter of Judge and Mrs T. M. BRADY of Houghton, at St Luke’s church,St Paul, Minnesota,last Wednesday evening. The matron of honor was Mrs Frank MAAS and the bridesmaid was Miss Maybelle BRADY. The best man was Frank MAAS. They will reside in Madison. 1903 September 5 Saturday- Henry WALLESTON married Miss Idene MULHEREN, niece of Mrs J. FERGUSON, of Sidnaw. The couple was both from Sidnaw. The ceremony was at Mrs FERGUSON’s home on Tuesday afternoon. They will live in Sidnaw. DEATH 1903 September 6 Sunday- Mrs Richard MOYLE, aged about 47 years, a pioneer resident of Hancock, died at her home in Hancock yesterday afternoon. She is survived by her husband and seven children- Sampson and John live in Butte, Montana; Joseph lives at home; two daughters are married and 2 live at home and all live in Hancock. The funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at the Hancock Methiodist church. Burial will be at the Old Protestant cemetery, Hancock. The first ceremony was performed on Saturday night and the last was yesterday, in Hancock. 1903 September 9 Wednesday- Edward MOON married Miss Martha Elizabeth TREVARROW of Calumet, last Saturday evening at the home of the bride’s parents in Calumet by Rev William COOMBE of Calumet. DEATHS 1903 September 10 Thursday- Mike RIDDLE, aged 60 years old , a farm hand employed on the OBERHOFF farm, near Atlantic, died yesterday morning in the Houghton County Poor House hospital. He was a deaf man and was standing on the track when a rock train hit him, not hearing it approach. He will be buried today at the Potters field at the poor house, as he had no means. 1903 September 10 Thursday- August LIKILA, aged 26 years, was terribly injured while at work in No 4 shaft in the Tamarack mine, last Tuesday morning, from an explosion in the mine and died yesterday. The funeral took place from the home of his father at North Tamarack location yesterday and burial at Lake View cemetery. He leaves a wife and father He was married less than a year ago. MARRIAGE 1903 September 11 Friday- Alfred G. NICHOLAS 0f Wolverine m me location married Miss Bertha HARRIS, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas HARRIS of Wolverine mine, at the bride’s parents home, yesterday afternoon. The bride was attended by Miss Irene HARRIS, her sister and the best man was F. J. NICHOLAS. They will live in Wolverine mine location where the groom is a machinist in the mine. DEATH 1903 September 11 Friday-- John LORA, aged 44 years, a watchman at No 7 shaft of the Calumet and Hecla mine, was killed instantly by the skip. He leaves a wife and two children. The funeral services will take place Sunday afternoon at the St Mary’s Italian church; Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery. NEWS ITEM 1903 September 11 Friday- Frank KOPP, who has been a resident of Lake Liden for eleven years, and an employee of Bosch brewing company for that time, will leave next week for the country of his birth, Germany. It is probable he will remain there. MARRIAGE 1903 September 12 Saturday- William C. JENKINS, of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan married Mary Anne WEDGE of Hurontown Thursday morning at the Hurontown home of the brides parents. They will live in Ishpeming. NEWS ITEM 1903 September 12 Saturday- Richard VIVIAN has resigned his position at the Calumet First National Bank and Walter WEIR, son of Captain William WEIR of the Calumet and Hecla mine, has given up his position with the mine. They will reside in Lake Linden. DEATHS 1903 September 13 Sunday-Mrs Anne COTE, aged 34 years1 died yesterday at her home at Paradise after a short illness. She is survived by her husband and six children. The funeral will be held tomorrow. She was the daughter of Flurey DRISCOLL of Houghton. 1903 September 13 Sunday- John OLSON, aged 27 years, single, died at the Northern Michigan hospital last night of typhoid fever. He had been at the hospital the past three weeks. 1903 Sept 15- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Archie J. VERVILLE of Hancock and Miss Cora T. LEIBLEIN, also of Hancock DEATHS 1903 September 15 Tuesday-Solomon TAKELA, aged about 36 years, a miner employed at the Calumet and Hecla mining company, was struck by a street car that ran over his body yesterday and killed him. The motorman was unaware that anyone was lying on the tracks till he was on top of him. He leaves a wife and three children. The funeral will be Tuesday from the home. 1903 September 15 Tuesday- Robert SCHON, aged 81 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Peter BELLMAN of South Lake Linden, on Sunday .He had been a resident of the copper country for 40 years, having come in 1863. and locating in Hancock till 9 years ago. He is survived by 5 children- Mrs BELLMAN; Peter of Chicago, Illinois; Mrs J. B. MARTIN of Hancock; John of Ontonagon, Ontonagon County and Jacob of South Lake Linden. The funeral will be this morning from St Cecelia’s church; Lake Linden and the burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. 1903 September 15 Tuesday- Mrs George ALSCHBACH, aged 74 years, died at the home of her son, John, at Lake Linden. Brights disease. She first came to the Keweenaw district 50 years ago and the latter 29 years in Lake Linden till her death .She was born in Germany and came with her husband to Keweenaw area. She is survived by 7 grown children- Mrs Charles MELLON of South Lake Linden; Harry; Charles and John of Lake Linden; Mrs John SHEA of Negaunee, Marquette County; The funeral will be tomorrow with services at the home of her son, John. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. NEWS ITEMS 1903 September 15 Tuesday- Mr Frank DELSS and Family, who have been residents of Lake Linden for a number of years, left yesterday for Northern Illinois, where Mr DELSS owns a valuable farm. They will locate there. 1903 September 15 Tuesday-Mr and Mrs Robert BUNT, of Houghton, left yesterday for Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they will make their home. He expects to go into business as a bookkeeper for himself. DEATH 1903 September 15 Wednesday- The funeral of the late Mrs John SITNEY, aged 70 years, of Pewabic, died Monday, will be held at St Patrick’s church, this morning. She leaves six children, John; James of Houghton; Patrick of Pewabic; Mrs P.S. SULLIVAN of Quincy and Mrs Phil ROBERTS of Isle Royale mine. She was a resident of the copper country since 1 863. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGES 1903 September 15 Wednesday-Herman BIRK of Laurium married Miss Clara BOWDEN of Iron Mountain at the Central Methodist Church in Iron Mountain on Monday. DEATH 1903 September 17 Thursday- Mrs Mary O'SHEA, aged 65 years, wife of Dennis O’SHEA, of Osceola, died Tuesday evening after a lengthy illness. She had resided at Osceola for a number of years. She is survived by her husband, Mrs John CONDON and Mrs Denniks SHEA; three daughters Catherine, Elizabeth and Bridget live at home. James; John and Timothy live at home. They had been offered good positions at good pay and a rosy picture of conditions in t hat area. They had expected to find conditions better there than in Calumet and planned to bring their families there to settle. There only a week and found that the Bay City district wasn’t to be compared to the copper country. Also the coal miners lot there wasn’t as pleasant as they were told. All returned to work in the Kearsearge mine in the copper country. MARRIAGE 1903 September20 Sunday- Richard LONG of Iron Mountain married Miss Mary PLYER yesterday, by Justice J. M. CURTIS in his Calumet chambers. They will reside in Iron Mountain, Dickinson County, Michigan. 1903 Sept 22 MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK John JOHNSON of Painesdale and Miss Minnie SILVERBACK of Atlantic mine DEATH 1903 September 22 Tuesday-Mrs Phillippa Maria CHYNOWETH, aged 75 years, died Sunday afternoon at her home in Houghton after an illness of many months. She had been a resident of the copper country over 40 years. Her husband was the late Captain John CHYNOWETH, who was formerly superintendent of mines in Ontonagon County, Michigan. They came to Houghton to reside in 1887. He died in 1898. The funeral will take place from the house tomorrow afternoon. She is survived by six children- Benjamin F.; Mrs Harriet M. RAYMOND of Houghton; Mrs W. A. BURNHAM of Trimountain; Miss Emma A. CHYNOWETH and Clarence R. both of Houghton and Charles of Laurium. NEWS ITEM 1903 September 22 Tuesday- David WHITE has resigned his position as shift boss at the Mohawk mine and leaves very soon for Detroit, Michigan, where he intends to make his future home. He has been employed in Calumet the last 5 years. DEATHS 1903 September 22 Tuesday- Henry RAJALA, aged 37 years, a resident of Centennial Heights, was found dead in the tenement house of Caot Eric ABRAMSON, in the rear of his saloon in Calumet early Sunday morning. It is believed that he stumbled into the open cellar way and was killed from the fall. He was seen drinking in the saloon earlier that day. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his death. 1903 September 22 Tuesday- The remains of the Late Captain John J. BATH, aged 76 years, were laid to rest yesterday afternoon at Lake View cemetery, Calumet, next to his wife who died last June. The funeral took place at his residence. He died last Saturday night and died of bronchitis. He was a CORNISH miner, who was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of William BATH and Elizabeth JAMES. He came to the copper country in 1854 at Keweenaw county and came when mining was in its infancy and helped it to be a famous mining district. He first worked at the old Cliff mine 4 later he went to Copper Falls mine and than to the St Clair mine and Eagle River mine as a superintendent at both. They lived in Keweenaw at Eagle River until six years ago when they moved to Red Jacket. He has two brothers in the copper country- William BATH, county school superintendent and Joseph BATH. He has a sister living in Plymouth and one in Birmingham, England. 1903 September 23 Wednesday- The remains of William COWLING, the unfortunate man who fell into the hold of the steamer Osceola on Monday night, were taken to the home of his brother, Thomas COWLING of Hancock. The funeral will be Thursday at his brother’s home in Hancock and burial at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. 1903 September23 Wednesday- Sacris LAHILLE, aged about 50 years, a trammer at the Isle Royale mine, was suddenly killed yesterday as a result of falling rock on his head. He was single. MARRIAGES 1903 September24 Thursday- Frank FRANCIS of Hancock married Miss Susie Elizabeth EVERT, daughter of Mr and Mrs Nicholas EVERT of Hancock, at St Joseph’s church, Hancock yesterday morning. The bride was attended by her cousin, Miss Barbara M. EVERT of Houghton and the best man was Joseph O. FRANCIS, a brother of the groom. They will reside in Hancock. 1903 Sept 24- Herman HARRI wed Miss Helma KUKELA, daughter of Mr and Mrs John KUKELA of Wolverine, at the home of parents of the bride, last night. MARRIAGES 1903 September24 Thursday- Francis Emery LI VING WAY married Miss Julia Laurette, LANG, daughter of Mr and Mrs James LANG of Calumet, at Sacred Heart church, Calumet, yesterday morning. MARRIAGE 1903 September25 Friday- John T. ROWE of Laurium married Miss Catherine COCKING, daughter of Mr and Mrs William COCKING of Laurium, at the bride’s parent’s home, yesterday morning. The maid of honor was Miss Anna LAKE of Scranron, Pennsylvania and Charles ROWE, of London, England, was the best man. They will live in Laurium. NEWS ITEM 1903 September 26 Saturday- Mrs Marie SODERGREN and daughter, Miss Marie, have arrived from Helsingford. Finland and will make their home in Calumet. She is also the mother of Uno and H. A. SODERGREN of Calumet. DEATH 1903 September 27 Sunday- William HAEFFER, aged over 90 years, who has been a resident of the copper country for 53 years and has made his home in Lake, Linden, the past 22 y ears, died yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Fred PRINCE of Lake Linden. He was born in Saxony, Germany and spent 20 years there, coming to the United States in 1850, coming to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin and staying there till 1862 when he came to Houghton County. He was a teamster for many years. The last 10 years he lived with his daughter, Mrs PRINCE. He is survived by 6 children- Ernest of Wisconsin; Charles and Mrs Peter KIRCHEN both of Great Falls, Montana; Herman of Isle Royale; Fred of Petoskey; Mrs. Fred PRINCE. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at the home of Mrs PRINCE at Lake Linden. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. 1903 Sept 29- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William TREYTOWN of Calumet and Miss Annie LAWS of Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County DEATH 1903 September 29 Tuesday- Mat POLLSARRI, aged 40 years, died at his home at the Wolverine location on last Saturday. He died of consumption. He had been ill for many years. His wife died 6 months ago. He leaves five little children ages 4 years to 12 years. The children have no relatives and the county will probably assist them. MARRIAGE 1903 September29 Tuesday- Charles F. SPAULDING of Salt Lake City, Utah married Miss Elizabeth D. HUSS of Houghton, at the home of the bride’s father, Alois HUSS of Houghton, yesterday afternoon. The groom is a graduate of the Michigan College of Mines. They will live in Salt Lake City. He is engaged in a coke business in Salt Lake City, using a process of his own invention. 1903 Sept 30- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Jacob TAKAL and Sofunya WILG of Calumet DEATHS 1903 September 30 Wednesday- Herman LASSILA, died late Monday night, at his home in West Hancock, after a very brief illness’ He leaves a wife and one child to survive him. 1903 October 1 Thursday- John HARRINGTON, aged 26 years, died yesterday morning at St Joseph’s hospital, Hancock of typhoid fever. He had been ill for two weeks and was unmarried. He is survived by his parents and several brothers and sisters. He lived in Hancock. 1903 October 1 Thursday- Michael SHEEHAN, aged 27 years, died at his home in Calumet yesterday of lung trouble. His wife survives him. They will live in Calumet DEATH 1903 October 2 Friday- Athonia CARUTTI, aged 54 years, of Calumet, died yesterday morning underground in the Calumet and Hecla mine where he was a watchman. It is presumed he fell into the shaft and was run over by the man car. He was one the most prominent men in the Italian colony in Calumet. He leaves a wife and six grown sons. The funeral will take place Sunday at St Mary’s Italian church Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1903 Oct 3 The funeral of John HUMMEL, who died at his home in Houghton, Thursday night, will take place Monday from St Ignatius church, Houghton, He had lived 40 years in the copper country. The funeral will take place this afternoon at the Laurium Methodist church and burial will be at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. 1903 October 20 Tuesday- The remains of Albert LUKE, aged 29 years , who formerly resided at the Franklin mine location, Hancock, will arrive here today from Sparta ,Minnesota where he died. as a result of a mine accident . The remains will be taken to the residence of John HOCKING in West Houghton, the father-in-law of Mr LUKE. The funeral will take place tomorrow at the Pewabic Methodist church and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He worked several years at the Quincy mine in Hancock and left to go to Minnesota. His brother, Samuel LUKE, brought the body to Hancock. DEATH 1903 October20 Tuesday- The remains of the late Fred CONKLIN, were shipped Sunday afternoon to Jacksonport, Wisconsin and were accompanied by his father who came to Calumet from there to take the body home for burial. Arthur HEITALA and Miss Hulda JARVELA were the couple in trouble. She said he made love to her and she learned to love him, she threatened him with a breach of promise suit among other things. Justice JACKOLA took Arthur aside and talked to him as a father. They finally agreed to marry and Justice JACKOLA made them man and wife yesterday afternoon. She had been a widow for 15 years, and than went to live with her son. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs John BONDS of Franklin; and 5 sons - William who lives in California; James of North Adams, Massachusetts; Joseph of Elgin, Illinois; Fred of Milwaukee, Wisconsin ; and Richard of Houghton. On Thursday afternoon. Miss WE ESE arrived in Hancock on the noon train Wednesday. 1903 October 31 Saturday- Henry GARDNER, employed in Don T. PEARCE’s bank restaurant, married Miss Mabel MOE of Hancock, by Justice BRAND in his Houghton office Thursday afternoon. After a wedding dinner with another newly married couple, the bride’s mother showed up and created a scene showing her displeasure at the marriage. She finally cooled down and escorted the couple to her home and after the women were in side the door, the door was slammed in the groom’s face. He is going to the law to get his wife back.
