PENDRAY and Miss Lily RODDA, both of Baltic mine DEATH 1903 May 1-Friday- Mat LIEVONEN, aged 67 years, died Wednesday at his Osceola home of apoplexy. He leaves a wife and two children. The funeral will take place this morning with burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE Friday-- Herman SACHS married Miss Lizzie KEMP, Wednesday evening at the home of bride's parents in Calumet. They will live in Calumet. 1903 May 1--Friday- William VINCENT married Miss Elizabeth THOMAS, at the bride's home in Tamarack location last night. DEATH 1903 May 1 Friday- A message from Sutton, Quebec, Canada, told of the sudden death of Mrs. John C. HARRIS on Wednesday, was received in Lake Linden yesterday by Mrs. Henry HODGE, a sister of the deceased. The deceased is the wife of Capt. John C. HARRIS, who for a number of years was in charge of the old Cliff mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan and the Virginia mine in Minnesota. She died of heart failure. Mrs. HODGE left last evening to be present at the funeral. PROBATE MATTER 1903 May 2 Saturday- In the matter of the estate of John MORCOM, deceased, his widow, Mary J. MORCOM, asked the court to make her administrator of the estate. DEATH 1903 May 2 Saturday- Richard GEORGE, aged 29 years, single of the Centennial mine location, was kicked in the head and killed by his own horse, yesterday morning. Two years ago his brother, Tom, was run over by railroad cars at the Franklin mine. 1903 May 3- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK William J. PAYNE of Chicago, Illinois and Miss Theresa GREEN of Lake Linden NEWS ITEMS 1903 May 3 Sunday- Richard BULLOCK, of the Wolverine mine location, leaves Monday for CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He hopes his health will improve while visiting there.He will visit his old home for some time. 1903 May 3 Sunday- Richard CARLYON and Fred MAY of the Wolverine mine location, left last night for Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will make their future home. DEATH 1903 May 6 Wednesday-Abel A. BENNETT, aged 84 years, died at his Eagle River, Keweenaw County home Sunday evening He was one of the first settlers and oldest men in the Upper Peninsula. He was the first agent at the old Cliff mine in Keweenaw county, and was on the original board of directors of the Cliff mine, chosen 1854 November 18. He has resided in Keweenaw County since that time. He owned a considerable amount of valuable land, which he leased out. He is survived by his wife and a nephew, Thomas BENNETT, a master mechanic at the Franklin Junior mine and another nephew, named HIGGINS who lives in New York City. He died of a stomach disorder. He will be buried at the Eagle River cemetery. NEWS ITEM 1903 May 6 Wednesday- Mrs. Alex COLLINS and son, Alex, of South Lake Linden, left yesterday for Butte, Montana, where they will locate. MARRIAGES 1803 May 7 Thursday- William H. PENDRAY married Miss Lily RODDA, both of Baltic, on Saturday evening, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen JENKINS of Baltic mine location. Miss Ida WILCOX of Boston mine was the bridesmaid and Ernest LALTY of Quincy mine was the best man. They will live at the Baltic mine. 1903 May 7 Thursday-John McDONALD married Miss Martha GOTTSCY yesterday morning at Sacred Heart church L'Anse, Baraga County, Michigan. Thomas BOLVEN and Miss Flora GOTTSCH, sister of the bride, were the attendants. 1903 May 7 Thursday- Chain DESCHLAINE married Miss Zealde PAQUETTE at Sacred Heart church, L'Anse, Baraga County, Michigan, Tuesday morning. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Clara PAQUETTE and the groom by William DESCHAINE, his brother. He was the son of William BROKENSHIRE and Elizabeth Ann CARNE, all 3 of CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He leaves a widow and three children. The funeral will be on Sunday with burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATH 1903 May 8 Friday- Edwin T. CRUSE, aged 59 years, who died suddenly at Allegan, Michigan last Wednesday night, formerly made Calumet his home. He was one of the prominent businessmen in Allegan. He was heavily interested in big grain elevators. He leaves a wife and no children. Mr. and Mrs. William CRUSE have gone to Allegan to attend the funeral. MARRIAGE 1903 May 8 Friday- John H. PAYNE of Chicago, Illinois married Miss Theresa GREENE daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William GREENE, of Lake Linden, at Holy Rosary church, Lake Linden, yesterday morning. The bride was accompanied to the altar by the bride's brother, George GREENE. Miss Lucile GREENE was the bridesmaid and the best man was Patrick SCANLON. DEATHS 1903 May 9 Saturday- The funeral of the late John LAWSON, whose death occurred at Painesdale, will be held this afternoon, with services at the Hancock Congregational church. Burial was at the old Protestant cemetery, Hancock. 1903 May 9 9aturday- Mrs. Bertha GRANT, 23 died yesterday of appendicitis in Hancock. The remains were shipped to Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan for burial. NEWS ITEM 1903 May 9 Saturday-- Miss Grace JENKINS and her brother, Joseph JENKINS of South Lake Linden, arrived at Lake Linden yesterday from an extended visit to CORNWALL, ENGLAND. They visited relatives there. MARRIAGE 1903 May 10 Sunday- Frank KRAEMER married Miss Dora FINN, both of South Lake Linden, yesterday afternoon by Justice E. F. PRINCE of Lake Linden. They will make their home at South Lake Linden. DEATHS 1903 May 10 Sunday- The funeral of the late Mrs. Ann PETERS, aged 85 years, widow, daughter of Thomas COMBELLACK and Elizabeth HILL, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, will be held this afternoon from the home of Mr. and Mrs. John RODDA of Lake Linden. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She died last Thursday. 1903 May 10 Sunday –Mrs. Arthur RANTLO of Laurium, aged 45 years, died yesterday. She leaves her husband and five children. The funeral will take place Tuesday. 1903 May 12 Tuesday- Matthias WIDENHOEFER, aged 76 years, died at his home in Hancock, Sunday morning of dropsy. He is survived by his two sons, John of Hancock and Herman of South Lake Linden. The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Hancock Lutheran church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. He was one of the Founders of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Hancock in 1867. 1903 May 12 Tuesday- The funeral of Henry BRODEUR, aged 17 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas BRODEUR, of Hanach, died at St Joseph Hospital, Hancock of typhoid fever, will be held tomorrow morning at St. Joseph's church. 1903 May 12 Tuesday- The funeral of Richard J. MORLEY, aged 32, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, son of William MORELEY and Elizabeth J. MAY, will be held this afternoon at the Pewabic Methodist church. Mistletoe lodge of the Sons of St George will attend the funeral in a body. NEWS ITEMS 1903 May 12 Tuesday- Daniel S. KEHOE of Laurium, has withdrawn from the insurance firm of KEHOE and LEARY and has left for Bisbee, Arizona , where he has a good position awaiting him. 1903 May 12 Tuesday- Michael SULLIVAN of Calumet took out his full citizenship papers before Judge STREETER in the circuit court yesterday. 1903 May 12-MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Adolph E. BROEMER of Ripley and Miss Marie COOK of Hancock DEATH 1903 May13 Wednesday- Stephen A. WILCOX, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James T. WILCOX of Greenland, Ontonagon County, Michigan, died of pneumonia on Sunday night . The remains were taken to Houghton Tuesday evening for burial. The funeral was at Grace Methodist church and burial took place at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1903 May 13 Wednesday- The remains of Dennis L. PARADISE, aged 36 years, whose death occurred Sunday morning after a lingering illness, were shipped to Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan for burial today. He was survived by a wife. MARRIAGE 1903 May 13 Wednesday- Adolph F. BROEMER of Ripley married Miss Marie COOK daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton COOK of Quincy mine, at St Joseph's church, Hancock yesterday morning. DEATHS 1903 May 13 Wednesday- The funeral of the late Henry R. BENNETTS will take place Thursday at the Hancock Methodist church. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, aged 73 years, a widower, son of John BENNETTS and Ann TREZONA. He was one of the pioneers of the copper country, coming to America at age 22 years in 1852 and remained in the East till 1860 when he came to Hancock. His wife died 9 years ago in Hancock and since then lived with his niece, Mrs. CHAPMAN in Hancock 1903 May 13 Wednesday- Patrick CONWAY, for some years a resident of Chassell, died at his home there of heart trouble. He was an employee of the Worcester Lumber Company mill. He is survived by a widow and three children. NEWS ITEM 1903 May 15 Friday- John BROMBERG and family of Albion left on the evening train on Wednesday to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada where they will make their home. DEATH 1903 May 16 Saturday-Mrs. J. G. WENDLE, aged 75 years, mother of Anton WENDLE, grocer, of Hancock, died Thursday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John FRANCIS at Calumet. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon, with internment at the Hancock cemetery. NEWS ITEMS 1903 May 16 Saturday- Joseph HERMANN, son of Mr. and Mrs. John HERMANN, of Lake Linden, who was the night clerk at the Arlington Hotel, Calumet, for several months, has resigned and gone to Menominee, Michigan to accept the position of day clerk at the large Stephenson Hotel in that city. 1903 May 16 Saturday- John FOLEY and his family left Sidnaw, Michigan for Moscow, Idaho, where they will locate permanently on a valuable homestead taken up by Mr. FOLEY's brother. The brother died recently and left the homestead to Mr. FOLEY. DEATH 1903 May 16 Saturday- Arthur BARLOW, one of the oldest residents of Baraga, Baraga County, died Thursday morning. He was over 60 years old and has been in feeble health for some time. The funeral will be held today from the Catholic Church in Baraga. MARRIAGE 1903 May 16 Saturday- Sidney POTTER married Miss Mary GRIGNON, yesterday evening at the home of the bride's parents in Houghton. They will reside with Mr. POTTER's parents. DEATH 1903 May 17 Sunday- Mrs. George SLEEP, aged 29 y ears, died early yesterday morning, had been in ill heath the last two years. Last week she was moved to her parent's home, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac TRUSCOTT of Hancock, at which place she passed away. She is survived by a husband and two children- John, aged 7 years and Newell, aged 4 years; her parents and brothers and sisters- John and Rutherford of Hancock; James T. of Detroit, Michigan and a sister- Margaret of Hancock. He was single. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, with services at the Quincy Finnish Church. Interment was at Lakeside cemetery, Calumet. 1903 May 19-Tuesday- The funeral of Mrs. J. G. WENDELA, whose death occurred at Laurium, was held Sunday afternoon from her daughter's home, Mrs. John FRANCIS. Services were conducted at Sacred Heart church and burial was at the Hancock cemetery. NEWS ITEM 1903 May 19 Tuesday- August CHRISTMAN, formerly of Lake Linden, and who for a long time held a responsible job at Calumet and Hecla mine, has resigned his job at assistant superintendent at the Mohawk mills. He will locate at Great Falls, Montana to live there. DEATH 1903 May 20 Wednesday- The funeral of the late James REED, aged 63 years, who died Monday, will take place from the Calumet Methodist church. He died at the home of his son, Joseph REED of Laurium. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of Joseph REED and mother unknown. He had been living with his son for a year and had been a resident of the copper country for 25 years. Besides his son, he leaves two daughters. NEWS ITEM 1903 May22 Friday- Sheriff WILLS of Houghton county took two persons to the Newberry, Michigan State Asylum for the Insane yesterday. DEATHS 1903 May 27 Wednesday- Mrs. Thomas DOWNING, aged 83 years, died at her home at Mass City, Ontonagon County, Michigan, Monday morning. She and her husband, settled where their present home now stands over 40 years ago. Her husband who survives her is 80 years old. 1903 May 28 Thursday- James McCORMICK died yesterday morning. He was a resident in Hancock over 30 years. He worked at the Quincy mine about 12 years. He leaves on son, Thomas McCORMICK and 4 daughters, Sarah; Jennie, Minnike and Ella. Sarah and Minnie reside in Great Falls, Montana. The funeral will be held Friday at his home, with internment at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1903 May 28 Thursday- Ben D. NOETZEL of Trimountain wed Miss Lila BROWN of Kearsearge, at the bride's parents home, Mr. and Mrs. Richard BROWN of Kearsearge, last night. DEATH 1903 May 28 Thursday- Fred LECKNER, a timberman in the North Tamarack mine, was accidentally killed yesterday afternoon, by the falling of a hanging wall of rock in the mine. (The civil records showed his age as 40 years) He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, the son of John ROWE and Grace ROSKILLY. He was a member of the Temple of Honor and Knights of Pythias. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the Red Jacket Congregational church. NEWS ITEMS 1903 May 30 Saturday- A party of about 26 to 30 people of Finnish birth will leave tonight for Boston, Massachusetts to sail for Finland. COWAN. MARRIAGE 1903 May 31 Sunday- Kowles Burdette SMITH of Prescott, Arizona married Miss Henrietta A. EDHLER of Houghton, in Kansas City, Missouri, yesterday afternoon. She left Houghton on Thursday to be in Kansas City for the wedding. Mrs. SMITH is a graduate of the Michigan College of Mines in 1901. He is now in charge of an assay office in Prescott and they will live there. DEATH 1903 May 31 Sunday- The funeral of Arnold WATERS, aged 60 years, who died Thursday night at his home in Hurontown, will be held tomorrow from Grace Methodist church, Houghton and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. He is survived by his wife and seven grown children. He was a retired miner and lately had been keeping a boarding house. MARRIAGE 1903 May 31 Sunday - Dr Walter S. STERN of Cleveland, Ohio married Miss Lora Belle BAER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob BAER of Hancock, Michigan, at the Hotel Pfister, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday evening last week. The maid of honor was Miss Sophia KOPPEL and Walter BAER was the best man. They will live in Cleveland. NEWS ITEM 1903 May 31 Sunday- Mrs. Fred ECKER of Lake Linden is disposing of her household goods with the intention of locating soon with her husband at Bisbee, Arizona, where he is now located. Deaths June 16 Tuesday-Andrew TOPPOLA died at the Northern Michigan hospital Sunday night of pneumonia. He had been working at the Trimountain mine and when thru was going to his brother's place at Centennial heights on Sunday when he was found ill. and taken to the hospital. He was found by his brother unconscious. June 16 Tuesday- Mrs. Annie Mary HESSE, aged 76 years, one of the oldest residents of the Quincy mills, died at the home of her son, Martin HESSE of Quincy mills. She died from an attack of grip. His family will stay in the east and visit friends before returning to Houghton. Death June 19 Friday- Mrs. Lavinia VIVIAN, aged 71 years, wife of James VIVIAN of Laurium, died yesterday at her home. She has resided in Calumet the past 35 years, Previous to that she had lived at the Quincy mine location. June 23 Tuesday- Michael DOYLE, died at the Sidnaw home of his sister, Mrs. Patrick PAQUE'I-!'E, Monday night. He was born in St Catherine's. Quebec, Canada in 1847. He came to this country as a young man and worked at his trade of a carpenter. He was a resident of Sault Ste Marie for a few years and last worked at that place. The last 8 years he lived in South Lake Linden and was a janitor at the public school of that city. June 28 Saturday- Frank RUPERT, aged 25 years, employed as a circus man by the FOREPAUGH and Sells Brothers circus, was killed yesterday morning at the fair grounds. While erecting the tent some poles fell down on him and killed him and injured Charles FOSTER. RUPERT had been with the circus since the beginning of the season. His body was shipped to his home town, Brooklyn, New York for burial.
