He was working making a hole for blasting but there was an explosive charge in that hole and it exploded. He was single and had worked at t he mine a few months. The funeral will be tomorrow with services at St. Joseph's church Collimate and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1902 Sept 25- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Thomas HOSKING and Miss Gertrude TREASON, both of Calumet. NEWS ITEM 12902 September 27 Saturday- Alex TREASON , one of the oldest and best known residents of Calumet, will leave Calumet on Sunday to go to New York and from there to CORNWALL, ENGLAND, his native country. He feels he has built up enough of this worlds goods, so will live in CORNWALL the rest of his life. MARRIAGE 1902 September 27 Saturday—D.r William P. KELLEY married Miss Mabel BRULE both of Anaconda, Montana, at the home of her brother, Frederick J. BRULE of Walkerville Montana.. Miss BRULE is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Justice and Euchariote BRULE of Lake Linden. She was a graduate of Lake Linden High School and after taking a stenographers course at college, she moved to Anaconda. They will live in Anaconda. NEWS ITEM 1902 September 27 Saturday- Mr. and Mrs. John HODGE of Butte City, Montana are visiting Mr. Hodges parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry HODGE of Lake Linden for two weeks. DEATH 1902 Sept 28 Sunday- Mrs. Bertha HUBERT, aged 44 years, wife of John P. HUBERT of Laurium, died yesterday of lung trouble. She leaves a husband and 4 children. The funeral will be at Sacred Heart Catholic church tomorrow morning. MARRIAGE 1902 September 28 Sunday- Edwin J. GOODFELLOW married Miss Celia SODERBERG, daughter of Mrs. Charles SODERBERG, Tamarack, at the home of her mother, last night at Tamarack. DEATHS 1902 September 30 Tuesday- Matti LYPSIN MAN of Pine Street, Calumet , aged 35 years, died at his home of heart trouble He is survived by a widow and five children. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the Calumet Finnish Lutheran church. 1902 October 1 Wednesday- The funeral of Ignatz BENITZ, who was killed at Trimountain, was held yesterday morning. 1902 October 1 Wednesday-Undertaker KRELLWITZ reported the death yesterday of Charles HILTUNEN, a Finnsh man, who has been working in a camp a couple of miles from Houghton. 1902 October 1 Wednesday- Mrs. Fred VOSS aged 73 years, who died at her home in Hancock last Saturday night of heart failure, was one of the oldest residents in Houghton County. She lived here continually for 42 years. She came to this section when it was wholly undeveloped and seen it grow into one of the richest counties. Her maiden name was KAISER. She was born in Prussia August 1829. In 1857 she married Fred VOSS and the next year came with him to America. They settled in Houghton County in 1860. The funeral services were held yesterday morning at St Joseph's church, Hancock. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGE 1902 October 1 Wednesday- Morris BANDETTINI married Miss Josephine LISA, daughter of Mr. and Mfrs James LISA, of Calumet, at the home of the bride's parents last night. The bridesmaid was Miss Josephine BORG and the best man was Louis WILMERS. They will live in Laurium. DEATHS 1902 October 1 Wednesday-- The funeral of the late Amanda LAVERDIERE, the young lady who met death on Sunday last by being struck by a wagon, was held yesterday at St. Joseph's church, Lake Linden. Burial was at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. 1902 October 2 Thursday- Howard JENNINGS, aged 17 years, son of Richard JENNINGS of Calumet; was accidentally shot and killed by Matti PELLEGRINI, last night. There were 8 young men in the room and a pistol was on the table, PELLEGRINI picked it up, thinking it was not loaded and pulled the trigger and killed JENNINGS. An inquest will be held to decide if PELLEGRINI should be charged or not. 1902 October 2 Thursday- The funeral of the late Octave FOUNTAIN, who was killed Tuesday will be held this morning from St. Cecelia's church, Lake Linden. Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden 1902 October 4 Saturday - Walter WIND, aged 22 years, of Calumet died yesterday. The funeral will be held Monday from St. Anthony's Polish church, Calumet. Burial will be held at the Hecla cemetery. 1902 October 5 Sunday- Andrew HONGALA, aged 84 years, was killed at Burkman's farm six miles west of Hancock, by being burnt to death from brush he was clearing and set fire to it. He was born in Finland. He leaves a wife, 82 year s old and not being very strong she had to go a quarter of mile for help but it was too late. No children survive him. MARRIAGE 1902 Oct 5 -- Martin RILSTOINE wed Miss Louisa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John MAUNDERS of Quincy mine location, at the home of the bride's parents, last night. DEATHS 1902 October 7 Tuesday-Charles KUNTZ, aged 80 years old one of the oldest residents of Keweenaw County, died at the Eagle Harbor home of his nephew, Charles PARKS, on Monday morning. He had been a resident of Eagle Harbor 53 years. He has a son who lives in Colorado. John KINGSTON is a son-in-law. He was born in Germany, Niederbrombach village, Wennenbergerhof, November 25, 1822. He came to America in 1844 and landed at New Orleans. Then worked his way to Chicago, Illnois and to Milwaukee, Wisconsin; finally landing in Lake Superior country. He was a blacksmith by trade at the Copper Falls Mine, Keweenaw county 1847-1850. He located at Eagle Harbor in 1849 and opened a hotel and a blacksmith shop. He gave up the hotel in 1864 and became Under Sheriff and then Sheriff of Keweenaw County. He will be buried at Eagle Harbor cemetery and the funeral will be from the home on Wednesday. 1902 October 7 Tuesday- Mrs. Samuel STEPHENS of Kearsarge died of heart disease last night at her home. Funeral at Kearsarge Methodist church. MARRIAGE 1902 October 8 Wednesday- John BROWN of Kearsarge married Miss Sophia OLDS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jabez OLDS of Allouez mine, Keweenaw county, at the home of the bride's parents, Monday evening. They will live at Allouez. NEWS ITEM 1902 October 9 Thursday- Thomas JILBERT, his wife and granddaughter, Miss Elsie GOODSOLE, have returned from a six months visit to CORNWALL, ENGLAND, to visit family and friends. DEATH 1902 October 9 Thursday- The funeral of August JOHNSON, who was drowned at Grosse Point Sunday, was held from the residence at Point Mills on Tuesday afternoon. The burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1902 October 9 Thursday- Gordon B. CAMPBELL, of the Calumet legal firm married Miss Lou C. HOLLEY, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. HOLLEY of Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Mrs. Charles McGEE, a sister of the bride, of Houghton, attended, also Will R. OATES of Calumet. DEATH 1902 October 9 Thursday-- Laura ALLEN, aged 25 years, wife of Robert ALLEN of the Florida mine location, died at her home yesterday. She leaves her husband and an infant child. Funeral services will be held tomorrow from the Kearsarge Methodist church. 1902 October 7 Tuesday-- August JOHNSON, aged 37 years, died by riding a bicycle along the dock of the Arcadian loading area and fell off the bike into the lake and drowned. A widow, Annie and a son 7 years old survive him. The funeral will be held this morning from the home. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1902 Oct 10- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Placide BEAUDOIN and Alfonsine LeFEBRE, of Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM 1902 October 11 Saturday- Mrs. Louis BARONI of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick FITZPATRICK, of Hancock. DEATHS 1902 October 11 Saturday- Two miners were killed in mine accidents at the Calumet and Hecla mine yesterday. One was Matt JAGER in the No. 4 branch by a piece of rock. He leaves a wife and two children. John PRIGENOVICH, aged about 36 years, at the Hecla branch, was struck by a piece of heavy timber. He was single. DEATH 1902 October 11 – Saturday - Mrs. John Wise, aged 77 years, wife of John WISE, and mother of John WISE, postmaster of South Lake Linden, died at the family home in South Lake Linden, yesterday morning. She was one of the oldest pioneers of t he Copper country, coming here in 1848 to Eagle River, Keweenaw county. Eighteen years ago she came to Lake Linden, with her husband and family. Three years ago she moved to South Lake Linden. She is survived by her husband and 5 sons- John, Joseph and Jacob of South Lake Linden; Andrew and Adam in the West. Also one daughter, Mrs. Michael MOORE of Anaconda, Montana. The funeral will be held at St. Cecelia's church, South Lake Linden on Sunday. Burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM 1902 October 11 Saturday- Charles PAWALK, who had been a resident of Lake Linden for a number of years, left yesterday to take a position at Ironwood, Michigan. DEATH 1902 October 12 Sunday- James DOLAN aged 55 years, died at his home at the Centennial mine location, yesterday after an illness of ten days. He had been night watchman for the Centennial mine for the last two years. He is survived by a widow and five children. The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet. The funeral will be held at St. Francis church, Lake Linden. She went to Riverside 16 months ago to see if it would improve her health. She is survived by her husband and five children, the eldest is 17 years old. Also, a sister Mrs. Frank WHIPPLE of Dollar Bay; brothers- Edward and Henry McLAUGHLIN of Chicago, Illinois; her mother – Mrs. Ann McLAUGHLIN of Cresco, Illnois. 1902 October 14 Tuesday- Miss Cammie McLEAN, aged 21 years, died at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. McLEAN of Ripley, last night. 1902 October 14 Tuesday--Nicholas KUTSCHELD, aged 65 years, died at his Hurontown home on Sunday. He lived in the copper country 40 years. He worked at the Isle Royale mine when it opened. For some time he was the assistant sexton at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton, where he will be buried on Wednesday. She came to the copper country 18 years ago. She is survived by 4 sons and one daughter. 1902 October 19 Sunday- Hector McDONALD , aged 69 years, died Sunday morning at his home in Lake Linden of pneumonia. Her was born in Lockell, Ontario, Canada. He came to Lake Superior copper district in 1876 locating at Lake Linden. He has been continuously employed at the Calumet and Hecla mill ever since. A widow, two sons, Lachlan and Donald and a daughter, Miss Sarah, survive him. The funeral will be this afternoon from the home and burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE 1902 October 21 Tuesday- Alex LANCTOT of Calumet married Miss Alice HART of South Lake Linden at St Cecelia's church, Lake Linden yesterday morning. They will reside in Calumet. DEATH 1902 October 21 Tuesday- Henry HARDYNEN, of the Champion mine location, died of apoplexy on Saturday. He was buried yesterday at the Atlantic cemetery. DEATHS 1902 October21 Tuesday- David W. MOWATT, aged 74 years, died at his home in Ashland, Michigan last night. He had been ill several months. He was born at St Andrews, New Brunswick, Ontario, Canada 1827 December 5. He looked after his mill and other affairs till the time of his death. He leaves a widow and two sons- Neville P. and David J. and three daughters- Mrs. John C. MANN; Althea M. and Ethel J. Services will take place this afternoon at the Calumet Methodist church. Burial will be at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. The Cigar markers Union , of which he was a member, will attend in a body. MARRIAGE 1902 October 26 Sunday- Charles WATERS of Calumet married Miss May WAREHAM, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William WAREHAM, Sr. of Lake Linden, at the home of the brides parents last night. Eva WAREHAM, sister of the bride, was the bridesmaid and the best man was Mr. WATERS, a brother of the groom (no Christian name shown ). They will reside in Calumet. DEATH 1902 October 26 Sunday- John L. KRANZ, a young Finn, was shot a few days ago by William McKERRNAN, near Laird. They were hunting and McNERNAN accidentally shot KRANZ. Both mm were employed at a lumber camp below Laird. The sheriff did not hold McNERNAN after he investigated the murder. MARRIAGE 1902 October 28 Tuesday- Harry JOHNS, of the Trimountain mine location married Miss Jessie JOHNS, daughter of Mrs. Jane JOHNS of Calumet at the home of the bride's mother, last Saturday evening. NEWS ITEMS 1902 October 28 Tuesday- Richard BRAY and James EDDY, of Tamarack mine location, have left their positions at the mine to go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND, to visit relatives and friends. BRAY has decided when the visit is over to go to South Africa as he has a position awaiting him in the mines on the Rand. EDDY is not sure what he will do, he may go with BRAY. DEATH 1902 October 28 Tuesday-Mrs. Eliza RODDA, aged 69 years, wife of John RODDA, died at her Lake Linden home Sunday morning. She had been an invalid many years. She was one of the pioneers of Lake Linden. She is survived by a husband and two stepchildren- John DAVEY of the Franklin mine and John RODDA of Cleveland, Ohio. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, her father was Vincent UREN and Her mother was Eliza SMITHERAM. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the residence and burial will be held at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton.
