He had no relatives in this country and was an employee of the lumber camps of E. BOLLMAN. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Lake Linden Lutheran church. The burial will be at the Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM 1901 September 1 Sunday-- Mr and Mrs Thomas PENHALLEGON of Laurium, have returned from their extended trip to CORNWALL, ENGLAND, visiting scenes of their childhood. MARRIAGES 1901 September 1 Sunday-- Carl WYCKOFF married Miss Mollie WUDELA, of Mohawk mine location, yesterday morning at the Kearsearge Methodist church parsonage. 1901 September 3 Tuesday-- William SMITH, a fireman employed by the Calumet and Hecla mine, married Mrs Alice SIMMONS, at her home in Laurium last Saturday evening. DEATHS 1901 September 4 Wednesday- The funeral of the late John KLINDER was held from his home in Ripley yesterday afternoon. Burial was at the Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 September 4 Wednesday--Charles KING, aged 62 years, of Tamarack city, died last night at his home. He leaves a wife and 8 children. He had been a resident of the copper country the past 40 years, living at Hancock, Lake Linden and Tamarack city where he ran a shoemaker’s shop. The funeral will be held at St Cecelia’s church, Lake Linden and burial will be at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. DEATH 1901 September 4 Wednesday-- Miss Maud McDOUGALL, aged 22 years, daughter of Alexander McDOUGALL, died at the family residence in Houghton, yesterday morning of spinal meningitis. She had been an invalid most of her life. She was born in Alpena, Michigan, and was one of six children. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon from the home and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 Sept 4--MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Jani MAKELA and Martha JOKI of Redridge Joseph JACQUES of Calumet and Albina LAUNDROCHE, of Houghton Safenia SAVELA and Mary MATANIEMI, of Calumet DEATH 1901 September 5 Thursday- Mrs Netta SURBECK, aged 68 years, an old and respected resident of Hancock, died at her home on Quincy hill yesterday of heart disease. She was born in Germany in 1833 and came to this country at the age of 33 years old. She was married when 32 years old. Two daughters and one son survive her--John, Mamie and Rose, all live at home. She leaves two brothers-- Rev Lincoln WIBBON, pastor at the German Lutheran church at Stewart, Minnesota and Garret WIBBON of Swedetown. Burial will be at the Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. The funeral will be at the German Lutheran church at Hancock. MARRIAGES 1901 September 5 Thursday--Henry A. PAULINE, son of Mrs Henry PAULINE married Miss Rose Maud LaFRANIER, daughter of Mr and Mrs Daniel LaFRANIER, at Holy Rosary Catholic church, Lake Linden, yesterday morning. Miss Laura GUCK was maid of honor and the bridesmaids were Miss Leona PAULL and Miss Alice DOLLINGER and the groomsmen were John HERMAN and John LaFRANIER . They will make their home in Lake Linden. 1901 September 6 Friday-- Martin CONWAY of Hancock married Miss helena KRELLWITZ, of Houghton, at Menasha, Wisconsin on Wednesday morning. DEATH 1901 September 10 Tuesday-- Kate SOLARC, wife of Joseph, aged 31 years, of Raymbaultown, died late Sunday night at her home after a lengthy illness of consumption. She leaves a husband and five children. The funeral took place yesterday at St Joseph’s church, Calumet. He had been in this country 6 months, three of which he worked at the Quincy mine. Funeral services will be from the Finnish church in Hancock and burial at the Lakeside cemetery. MARRIAGES 1901 September 11 Wednesday--Antoine GABE, of Redridge married Miss Mary McMAHON of Franklin township, at St Patrick’s Catholic church, Hancock yesterday morning, he bride was attended by her sister, Miss Bridget McMAHON and the groom by his brother as best man. Their future home will be at Redridge location. 1901 September 11 Wednesday- Invitation have been issued by Mr and Mrs Matthew VAN ORDEN for the marriage of their daughter, Miss Elizabeth to Abdre Alfred FORMISS. They will reside in Escanaba. DEATHS 1901 September 15 Sunday--Ante HELKLLA, a Finnish miner at the Quincy mine, died yesterday morning at an early hour. He was single, aged 33 years, and died at his home of August AOLA, where he boarded. The funeral will be held today from the Finnish church in East Hancock and the burial will be at the Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. 1901 September 15 Sunday-- Mrs Jacob YELP, aged 23 years, died at the family home in West Houghton, yesterday afternoon from consumption. She leaves a husband and three children to mourn her. The funeral will be held from St Ignatius church on Monday morning. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1901 September 15 Sunday-- James BLENDALL married Miss Elizabeth CHYNOWETH, yesterday afternoon, had a home wedding at Elm River. They will live there. 1901 Sept 15- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Herman PITKAJARVI and Annie KARLE, of Hancock Ben SANDERS and Eva BONTYY, of Laurium William TREWHELLA and Mary MITCHELL, a late arrival from CORNWALL, ENGLAND. DEATH 1901 September 15 Sunday-- Martin FOLEY, aged 66 years, died suddenly of heart failure on Friday night, at his home in Laurium. He was a pioneer businessman in Calumet. He was born in Ireland and immigrated to America in 1851 spent two years in New York City and then came to Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County in September 1853. He at once engaged in merchandising with his brothers. In 1857 they started a branch store in Houghton, assisted by his brother, Michael. They had a good business till 1875 when they were burned out and lost heavily. He started a store in Red Jacket in 1876 within his brother, Martin. and stayed there ever since. His brother, Michael died in 1876. He leaves a widow and 5 children-- John, Mr W. L.; Mrs E. F. CUDDIHY; Miss Mable and Irene. The funeral will be held at Sacred Heart church, Calumet on Monday morning, with burial at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATH 1901 September 17 Tuesday-- Mrs Elizabeth THOMAS, aged 74 years, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs William JAMES, of Calumet, yesterday morning she died of internal injuries when she accidentally broke a thigh nine weeks ago. She had resided in this section of the country for a great many years. She was born in ENGLAND. She leaves a family of children- Capt John THOMAS, of the Champion mine; Wm B. THOMAS of Calumet; Mrs Wm JAMES and Thomas THOMAS . The funeral will take place Wednesday at the Tamarack Methodist church and the burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1901 September 17 Tuesday-- William TREWHELLA married Miss Mary MITCHELL, who lately arrived from CORNWALL, ENGLAND, at the Atlantic mine on Saturday evening, at a home wedding. The groom is a graduate of the College of Mines, Houghton. 1901 September 19 Thursday-- Thomas WEDGE of Hurontown married Miss Clara KUNNON of Isle Royale mine location, at the Trinity Episcopal church parsonage, Houghton, last evening. Miss May WEDGE was the bridesmaid and the best man was Joseph KUNNON. DEATH 1901 September 20 Friday-- Peter PLJANICH, aged 28 years, a trammer who was accidentally killed at the Tamarack mine, on Wednesday, services were at St Joseph’s church, on 8th Street, Calumet, on Friday. Burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. He was unmarried and been in this country 3 years and had few relatives here. MARRIAGE 1901 September 21 Saturday-- There was a DOUBLE wedding at the Phoenix mine location, Keweenaw County on Thursday evening. The brides are sisters and the grooms are brothers, they are; 1. John LAMERAND married Miss Sophie BEAUCHAMP 2. Fred LAMERAND married Miss Tillie BEAUCHAMP. The funeral will be next Thursday from the Finnish Church in East Hancock and burial will be at the Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. 1901 September 22 Sunday-- Mrs Kate LUKKANA, aged 83 years, an old resident of the Franklin location, died last Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs SAURI The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Finnish Church in East Hancock and burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. 1901 September 25 Wednesday--Henry LEINONEN of Coburntown, died last evening from the effects of a bullet from a gun in the hands of Matt PARANEN. He was shot Saturday night, in the groin and it was not thought to be fatal but of course it became so. The coroners jury found the death was accidental. Funeral will be held from the East Hancock Finish church. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. 1901 September 25 Wednesday-- Mrs Catherine WILLIAMS, aged 68 years, wife of Richard WILLIAMs of Centennial mine, died Tuesday evening of diabetes which had bothered her for one year. She leaves her husband and 7 children- John, Win, Albert, Thomas; James and Charles also Mrs Wm BAWDEN. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to America to Wisconsin at the age of 16, then moved to Greenland, Ontonagon County, Michigan, where all 7 children were born. Five years ago the family moved to the Centennial mine. The funeral will be held Thursday from the Calumet Methodist church and burial will be Lake Side cemetery, Calumet. 1901 Sept 25--MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Leo GREENWOOD and Miss Kate WALFORD, both of Kenton Charles J. BICE of Redridge DEATH 1901 September 25 Wednesday--The inquest of Louis PEDOZI , who had been killed by a stump that had been dislodged in a blasting operation at Trimountain mine, Monday, will be held this morning, he leaves a wife and several children living in Italy. Burial was at Chicago, Illinois. MARRIAGE 1901 September 26 Thursday-- Alexander STERLING married Miss Hattie McDONALD, daughter of Mr and Mrs T. W. McDONALD of the Quincy mine location, at the home of the bride’s parents, last night. They will reside at the Quincy where the groom is employed. DEATH 1901 September 26 Thursday-- The funeral of Mrs Grace E. LANKSBURY, wife of Wm H. LASNKSBURY of the Centennial mine, who died Tuesday morning, will be held at Tamarack Methodist church Friday afternoon. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She died of a paralytic stroke. She was a resident of the copper county for many years and previous to residing here lived in the iron district. She was married about 40 years ago in Albany, New York. He was a pioneer watchman at the Atlantic mine. He lived 10 years in the copper county. A wife and five children are left to mourn him. The funeral was at his home yesterday and burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton 1901 September27 Friday- Frank GIBBS wed Miss Miss Ullian, daughter of Mr and Mrs BICE, at the brides parents home in Redridge Wednesday evening. Robert GIBBS was the best man and Miss Daisy BICE, sister of the bride was maid of honor. DEATH 1901 September 27 Friday-- Mrs Salome GRAY, aged 70 years, died at her home in Houghton of a cancerous condition and old age, yesterday. She was born in Rochester, Massachussetts, a hamlet near Bedford where she spent her maiden days. She came west in the 50’s She came to this part of country 20 years ago and has since made a home with her son. A son A. R GRAY mourns a beloved mother. The funeral will be held from his home on Saturday and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 Sept 28- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Matte OYSSTI and Adela OLGREN, both of Calumet Lewis LAGASSA and Maria MAELETTE, both of Houghton William AHO and Aino SOLNI, both of Franklin DEATH 1901 September 28 Saturday - Hector BARIL, aged 51 tears, died at his home in Lake Linden yesterday morning. He had been ailing the past few months but a severe shock on Tuesday watching a terrible fire burn down a hotel and jewelry store, hastened his death. He was born in Canada and 32 years ago he came to the copper country and located in Houghton where he lived for years. Twenty-eight years ago he came to Lake Linden and stayed there. He conducted a saloon for 21 years in Lake Linden. He leaves a widow, and an adopted daughter, Miss Corine BEAUCHAINE, to mourn him. The funeral will be next Monday morning at St Joseph’s church, Lake Linden and burial will be at Mount Calvary, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE 1901 September 28 Saturday-- John McEACHRAN of Lake Linden married Miss Lillie, daughter of Mr and Mrs Samuel CHAMPION, at their home at the Tamarack mills, on Thursday evening. Miss Bertha CHAMPION, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Miss Pearl CHAMPION and Miss Bessie CRASIG were bridesmaids while the attendants to the groom were Alvis JENKS; John CRAIG and James EDMUND. They will live in Lake Linden. DEATH 1901 October 1 Tuesday-- Bernard McGINNIS, aged 54 years, died at His Hancock home of pneumonia, Sunday morning. He was born in Nemy County, Ireland and came to this country when seven years old. He came to Lake Linden and stayed there all his life. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen and eight children-- Stephen Edward; Bernard; Mary; Alice; Bridget; Margaret and John .The funeral will be held at St Patrick’s church tomorrow and burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Houghton. 1901 Oct 1- MARRIAGE LICENSES ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Elbert D. DEATHS 1901 October 2 Wednesday-- Mrs Caroline KLINE, wife of Charles KLINE of Tamarack city, died of cancerous growth in her stomach, yesterday morning at her home. Besides her husband and 4 children, she is survived by her mother, Mrs SCHMELTZER, four brothers-- Marti, Fred, Frank and Andrew SCHMELTZER and two sisters- Misses Elizabeth and Frances. Burial Friday at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden and services were at St Cecelia’s church, South Lake Linden. 1901 October 2 Wednesday-- Perry EPPLER, aged 53 years, of Chassell, died Sunday morning at the Lake Superior General hospital from blood poisoning caused by an injury some time ago in Chassell. His wife died a few years ago and due to his poor circumstances the County cared for his two girls and the boy went to Marquette, Michigan and works in a foundry. Funeral services were held at the hospital and burial at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. 1901 October 2 Wednesday-- A telegram was received from Grand Rapids, Michigan telling of the death of Miss Bessie HALL, aged, 30 years, daughter of Capt and Mrs Edward HALL of the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County who died yesterday. She was visiting with her brother Edward and was taken ill. The remains arrived in Calumet last night. She was a bookkeeper at the Allouez store. Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers- Will and Edward. The funeral will take place at the Calumet Methodist church and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 October 3 Thursday-- Mrs Matilda ANDREWS, aged 49 years, died yesterday morning at the Lake Linden Hospital, where she had been under treatment for some time. The funeral will at the Salvation Army barracks Calumet, on Saturday. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1901 October 3 Thursday-- Richard WELCH married Miss Ellen McCORMICK at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet yesterday. She had been in Hancock 35 years, coming from Germany when she was 12 years old. She was wed to Christian MILLER at age 20, in Port Washington Wisconsin. Her husband and five children survive her-Rudolph A; Rose; Daisy; Mrs EDWARDS and Mrs BENNETTS. Funeral will be Sunday from the German Lutheran church and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet DEATHS 1901 October 4 Friday--The funeral of Arthur COONS, aged 19 years, who died Tuesday morning at St Joseph’s hospital, Hancock, will be held from John D. CRAWFORD’s Chapel this afternoon. The burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. He leaves his parents and seven brothers. His parents and five of his brothers live in CORNWALL, ENGLAND; one brother lives in Iowa; and the other lives in India. He was born in Hancock in 1860 and has lived here for years. DEATHS 1901 October 8 Tuesday-- Henry KLINE, aged 43 years, died Sunday morning at his home at Tamarack after a long illness of consumption. He is survived by a widow and four children. He was a mason by trade. The funeral will be held this morning from his home and the burial will be at the Atlantic cemetery. 1901 October 10 Thursday--Three men were instantly killed in Number 3 shaft of the Quincy mine yesterday morning They are; Alfred GALE, aged 40, married; Alfred GALE, JR, son of the preceding, aged 22, single; Fred FARINER, aged 28, single. An unexpected explosion in the mine hurled rocks on them completely covering them and it took two hours to uncover them but they were dead. Alfred GALE was born in ENGLAND and had been employed at the Quincy mine for years. He leaves a wife and 5 children. DEATH 1901 October 17 Thursday-- Mrs Jeremiah E. O’NEILL died Tuesday evening of heart disease at her Hancock home. She was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Cornelius BUCKLEY of Hancock and she was born in Hancock. She had been married 12 years. Genevieve also had one sister, Mrs John STEHLIN of West Hancock.
