DOWN of Houghton and Mary CUNNINGHAM of Canada MARRIAGE 1901 July 2 Tuesday -- John BEARD married Miss Minnie WILLIAMS at the Calumet Methodist church parsonage, last week. DEATH 1901 July 2 Tuesday-- Robert MURRAY, aged about 65 years, one of Lake Linden’s former pioneer resident, died in Duluth, Minnesota, of cancer of the stomach. He was a resident of Lake Linden for a great number of years. He leaves two sons, Allie and Robert of Lake Linden and one daughter, Mrs Alice LeSAGE of Lake Linden. He went to Duluth for possible treatment of his cancer. He received no relief. MARRIAGE 1901 July 3 Wednesday-- Wilfrid HOULE married Miss Annie DROUIN, daughter of Mr and Mrs JULIUS DROUIN, yesterday morning at St Joseph’s church, Hancock . The maid of honor was Miss Rosanna BEAUCHAMP and the groom’s man was Alphonse DROUIN, brother of the bride. They will make their home in West Hancock. NEWS ITEM 1901 July 4 Thursday-- Two miners at the Atlantic mine, William MARTIN and Benjamin SIMONS were injured by a mine blast yesterday. One of MARTIN’s eyes were put out and SIMONS lost two fingers. The two men were preparing a hole for blasting when the blast took them unawares. CORNISH? MARRIAGE 1901 July 6 Saturday- Orlando BARSANTI married Miss Amelia PENIS, yesterday morning at the Italian church in Calumet. Miss Effie KNECHTGES was bridesmaid and the best man was Gordon F. DeROSIA. They will live in Laurium. DEATHS 1901 July 7 Sunday-- Mrs Jonas BOMERT, aged 73 years, died yesterday afternoon, she was one of the oldest and mose respected resident of Keweenaw County, She died at the BOMERT farm, 5 miles from the Central mine. She leaves a family of grown up children, one of which is Amos BOMERT, a blacksmith at the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County. The funeral will be Tuesday. 1901 July 7 Sunday-- William J. WATERS, aged 43 years, died at his home in Calumet yesterday morning of consumption .He was afflicted for several months with asthma and bronchitis which turned into consumption. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He leaves a mother; two brothers and two sisters. He was a florist in Red Jacket. The funeral will be held Tuesday with services at the Calumet Methodist church. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. The Sons of St George will conduct the services. 1901 July 7- Hiram ROGERS, an old resident of Copper Harbor, Keweenaw County, died on July 4th Peculiar circumstances surround the death. They will live at Lake Linden 1901 July 12 Friday-- James ROWE married Miss Susan WHITE, both of Opechee, daughter of Capt William WHITE, at the home of the brides father last night at Oscol,a. Miss Clara DANIELL was the bridesmaid and Richard ROWE was the best man. DEATH 1901 July 13 Saturday--Samuel LeCLAIR, aged 35 years, committed suicide yesterday morning by shooting himself in the heart in his saloon in Lake Linden. He had just spent 3 years at the Keweenaw County half way house and it is felt that he was despondent when he left there leading to his suicide. He leaves a wife and eight children , 5 daughters and 3 sons at his home in Lake Linden, and his aged parents, Mr and Mrs John LeCLAIRE. He was a native of Canada and went to Calumet 22 years and finally coming to Lake Linden. The funeral will be tomorrow at St Anne’s Academy, Lake Linden and burial at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM 1901 July 14 Sunday-- Mrs Mary WILCOX of Laurium, has resigned her position at the VIVIAN store in Laurium and leaves next September for Seattle, Washington where she will make her home in the future. She worked in Laurium the last 4 years. DEATH 1901 July 16- Joseph A. KNODELL, of Lake Linden, committed suicide by drowning at Torch lake Thursday morning. He was about 50 years old and came to Lake Linden in March 1901. The funeral will be held from the home of Joseph PEARCE on Wednesday and burial at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. His brother Rev J. R. KNODELL of California asked that he be billed for burial expenses. NEWS ITEM 1901 July 16 Tuesday-- John WHITE and Henry JAMES, both of Osceola mine location, leave next Monday for New York where they will take a steamer to St IVES, CORNWALL, ENGLAND, where they will visit relatives and friends. DEATH 1901 July 16 Tuesday-- Henry VOETSCH, aged 46 years, a brother of Marshal Louis VOETSCH, died yesterday afternoon at his home in Houghton of consumption. It is felt that heat of the last few days hastened his death. He was born in Houghton in 1855 and lived there all his life. He was employed at several places and the last position he had was as a janitor at Houghton town hall. He leaves a wife, Louise and three children to mourn him as well as two sisters, Mrs MARCOTTE and Kate VOETSCH, both of Lake Linden. He was married twice One of his surviving children is from his first wife. MARRIAGE 1901 July 18 Thursday--Sylvester PADRETTA married Miss Margaret DRISCOLL at Sacred Heart church, Calumet yesterday morning. They will reside in Calumet as the groom works there. DEATH 1901 July 18 Thursday- The funeral of the late Mrs Anna HOGANSEN, who died last Tuesday, will be held from the Norwegian Lutheran church, Calumet today. Burial will be at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1901 July 18 Thursday-- Casimer WEIS of Lake Linden, son of Mr and Mrs Jacob WEIS married Miss Lasetta SCHWERN, yesterday morning at the Holy Rosary Church, Lake Linden. They will reside in Lake Linden. DEATHS 1901 July 18 - Matti KOSKI, aged about 14 years, a drill boy, at the Isle Royale mine, was killed by falling down a mineshaft. He leaves a mother and two brothers. Burial will be at the Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. 1901 July 19 Thursday-Fred JAKOLA, of Hancock, son of Wm JAKOLA, aged 14 years, a drill boy, was killed the Isle Royale mine, on Tuesday evening by a huge boulder falling on him. The funeral was held yesterday from the Hancock Finnish church. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. DEATH 1901 July 20 Saturday-- Robert WESCOT, an old resident of the Quincy mill, died last evening, after an illness of four months. Forty years ago he left ENGLAND, and came to Calumet, where he remained 20 years. He then located at several places in the copper country and finally located at the Quincy mill. He was a stonemason and leaves no relatives here. The funeral will be held Sunday from the home of Mr. Absalom DAVEY in Quincy where he lived. Burial will be at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden.. RULE and Maria DYMOND, of Boston mine location NEWS ITEM 1901 July 23 Tuesday-- Frank MITCHELL, of Tamarack mine location, returned on the noon train yesterday to Calumet from CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He brought with him his 80-year-old mother, Mrs MITCHELL from CORNWALL to live with him. She had not seen her relatives in 30 years and the scene at the railroad station was very touching. DEATHS 1901 July 23 Tuesday-The funeral of Mrs Eliza WALDRON, aged 80 years, who died last Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs Peter RENAUD, of Houghton, was held at Grace Methodist church, Houghton. She was buried at Forest Hill cemetery; Houghton .She was an old settler in the copper country. She was born in ENGLAND and came to this country to Eagle River, Keweenaw County in 1853. Later she moved to Houghton where she had resided for 42 years. JACKELA was held yesterday at the Finnish Church and burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1901 July24 Wednesday-- Andres DONOVAN of Laurium wed Miss Mary DOOLEY, of Osceola at the Sacred Heart Catholic church on Monday morning. DEATH 1901 July 24 Wednesday-- Mrs Mary O’NEIL died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs LEAHY, of Calumet. She had been ailing for some time and death was a relief to her. She leaves two sons and three daughters to mourn her passing. Burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet and funeral at Sacred Heart church, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1901 July 24 Wednesday-- William QATES married Emily LOBB of Tamarack Cty yesterday at the office of Justice Casper BRAND. They received their marriage license and they went to the sherriff’s office to have him tie the knot but he was out of town and the under-sheriff had no authority to do so. Quartermaster Sergeant FRIMODIG of Company G was the best mans and the bridesmaid was Miss Elizabeth HENDRICKSON, sister of the groom. They will reside in West Houghton. DEATH 1901 July 26 Friday-- Mrs William WERN, aged 57 years, died Wednesday night at the home of daughter, Mrs Mary HANN of Chicago, Illinois. The cause of death was a complication of diseases. She was an old resident of Portage Lake having come to Houghton from Germany at the age of 17 years and staying here until the death of her first husband, Nicholas HANN. Twenty-one years ago she moved to Hancock, becoming the wife of Wm WERN, her present husband. She leaves besides her husband also two daughters-- Mrs Mary HANN of Chicago and Mrs Henry LARSON. MARRIAGE 1901 July 26 Friday-- Fred RICHARDS of Calumet and Miss Asenath JORY daughter of Mr and Mrs Edwin JORY of Calumet, at the home of the brides parents last evening. George RICHARDS, brother of the groom was the best man and the bridesmaid was Miss Elizabeth JORY, a sister of the bride. They will live in Laurium. They will live in Chicago. NEWS ITEM 1901 July28 Sunday-- Mr and Mrs George KITTO, of Dollar Bay, went to Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan for the state convention of the SONS of ST GEORGE. Also George SLOCKETT and George PRIN both of Houghton.. DEATHS 1901 July 28 Sunday--Mrs Mary LISOWE, about 50 years old, died yesterday morning at her home in Calumet She lived in the copper country nearly all her life, having lived in Calumet 32 years. She leaves a son, Theodore and a daughter, Miss Kate LISOWE; a brother, Martin BURKE; and two sisters-- Mars Antoine FISHER and Mrs Charles SWAIN, all are residents of Calumet. The funeral will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic church tomorrow morning and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 July 30 Tuesday-- Capt Sylvanys MOTT, aged 84 years, died Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ellen BELL of Hancock, due to old age. He was born in New York in 1818 and for 40 years was a sailor on the great lakes, coming to Portage Lake, with big tugs to Hancock and Houghton were here to do work. At the age of 32 years he was first married and two children survive this marriage—Mrs. Ellen BELL of Hancock and Mrs. John CASE of Chicago, Illinois. Also two children are living from the 2nd marriage-- Bessie MOTT and Mrs. Sarah TRUEAU of Detroit, Michigan. The funeral will be held at the home and burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Hancock. MARRIAGE 1901 July 30 Tuesday-- Joseph SANREFRET married Julia HANNER of South Lake Linden, at St Cecelia’s church, of South Lake Linden yesterday morning. They will make their home in the Torch Lake district. DEATH 1901 July 30 Tuesday- Matt TILTOLL, aged 73 years, of the Wolverine location, died while visiting friends at the Lake shore Sunday morning. He leaves two grown daughters to mourn him. Funeral services will take place today at the Finnish Lutheran church on 8th and Oak Streets, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGES 1901 July 30 Tuesday- Ernest DONBOM of Raymbaultown married Miss Anna PETERSON, of Centennial Heights on Saturaday evening. 1901 July 31 Wednseday-- Alsidas GOURD married Miss Emma Marie GRENLER, daughter of Mrs Narcisse GRENLER, yesterday at high noon at St Anne’s church, Calumet. They will reside in Laurium. DEATH 1901 July 31 Wednesday-- Frank STETTER, aged 73 years, a old resident of the copper country, died at the Lake Linden hospital yesterday morning after having two operations performed. He had not been wholly well the last 10 years. He came to the copper country 40 years ago and had been employed both by the Calumet and Hecla and Tamarack mines. Thirteen years ago he came to South Lake Linden and lived there ever since. He leaves a wife, five sons and five daughters--the sons are John of Laurium; Nonce and Frank of Dollar Bay; Peter and Joseph of South Lake Linden; the daughters are Mrs Thomas PEARCE and Mrs Fred SHLEETER, both of Lake Linden ; Mrs Jacob SCHON, the Misses Minnie and Lizzie, all three of South Lake Linden. Miss Alice COLLINS was the maid of honor and the best man was Thomas J. CAREY. They will reside in Calumet where the groom is a popular railroad man. MARRIAGE 1901 August 2 Friday-- Henry TUPPER of Algonquin, Illinois married Miss Clara MILLS, daughter of Mr and Mrs James H. MILLS of Lake Linden at yesterday noon at the home of the brides parents. They will live at Algonquin, Illinois. DEATH 1901 August 2 Friday--The remains of the late Mrs Catherine LIGHT, aged 76 years, widow of John, who died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs George E. COURTNEY at Sault Ste Marie, Michigan of paralysis, will arrive in Calumet this evening for burial. The funeral services will be at the home of her son, Wm J. LIGHT at Tamarack mine location at Saturday afternoon and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. The pallbearers were all of Lake Linden the home of the decased for 28 years. All her children were present except Arthur of Denver, Colorado, born in 1865. The pallbearers were-- Captain Edwrad BAWDEN; CAPT James JAMES; Wm DAVEY; James HOAR; Wm WAREHAM and P. H. PAYNE. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND in 1825 and her maiden name was PHILLIPS, and at age 20 years she married John LIGHT in CORNWALL and brought to America in 1848 two children born in CORNWALL Wm J. and R. D. LIGHT. On arrival in America they settled in Wisconsin until 1850 when her son Joseph was born, when they left the farm they had bought in 1858 and settled in Ontonagon County and became a mining Captain at the Minnesota mine. In 1875 they moved to Lake Linden. Her husband died five years ago at the age of 75 years. Her daughters -Mrs Wm PENBERTHY of Sault Ste Marie, was born in Wisconsin in 1852; Mrs Edwin HENWOOD was born in 1854 Jany 22 at the Minnesota mine; Mrs George E. TAYOR of Denver was born in 1859.Mrs George E. COURTNEY born in 1863; Mrs Willington E. EARLE of Sault Ste Marie was born in 1869. MARRIAGE 1901 August 2 Friday-- Peter PINTEN of Trimountain mine location married Miss Mary JENKINS of the Atlantic mine location, at the parsonage of Grace Methodist church on last Wednesday evening. DEATH 1901 August 3 Saturday-- Miss Mary Anne St. ARMOUR, aged 38 years, died yesterday morning after a long illness. at her home. in Hancock. She went to Arizona to try and regain her health to no avail. She was a clerk in the office of the Houghton County Probate Judge. She was born in Hancock She leaves to mourn her, a mother, Mrs A. St ARMOUR; her only sister, Miss Katherine and three brothers, of Ashland; and Wm and Thomas of Hancock. BANDETTINI of Calumet and Annie VOLLMER of South Lake Linden DEATHS 1901 August 6 Tuesday-- William RALPH, aged 23 years, died at the Hancock home of his father, John RALPH, last evening of typhoid fever. The remains will be taken to Calumet today to the home of William TREVARROW from where the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. He was a young man employed as a messenger for different companies, the last being on the South Shore Railroad. For a number of years the RALPH family lived in Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan. He leaves his parents to mourn him. CORNISH? 1901 August 6 Tuesday-- Joseph MATHEWS of Albion, formerly of Calumet, aged 59 years, dropped dead Sunday afternoon, in George GAUTHER’s saloon in Laurium on Sunday afternoon from heart failure. He came to Laurium, with his son, Eugene, who was his business partner and took their team to a livery stable. He had resided in Laurium for a number of years prior to going to Albion, Michigan.. To mourn his death are a wife and children-- Joseph, Will and Arthur of Laurium; John of West Superior; Eugene of Allouez; and Louise and Addie of Laurium; Mrs D. T. MEHAN of lshpeming, Michigan; and Mrs Ben M. McDONALD of Hancock. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at St Anne’s church, Calumet and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATHS 1901 August 9 Friday-- Michael DOOLEY, aged 60 years, another of Calumet’s early residents, died at his home Wednesday afternoon at Raymbaultown of stomach trouble. He was employed at the Calumet and Hecla mine until a short time ago. He is survived by a wife and seven children -- Martin; Patrick; Michael, Thomas, John, Dan and Mary. The funeral will be held Sunday at the Sacred Heart church, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1891 August 9 Friday- Leander BROWN, aged 35 years, who has conducted the Vienna bakery the past two years in Calumet, died at his home at noon yesterday, died after two operations. He was a Finnish born laborer. He had worked there at the mine for 30 years. He was born in ENGLAND in 1827 and came to America after his marriage there. PHILPOTT of Hancock and Minnie ROGERS of Dollar Bay DEATHS 1901 August 14 Wednesday-- Mr Loraine WOOD, aged 38 years, died at St Joseph Hospital, Hancock of multiple tumors yesterday morning after a lingering illness of ten months. He was born in Saginaw, Michigan and was raised to manhood in that city. Four years ago he was married to Miss Catherine STROND of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan and a year later they moved to Hancock and he opened the Tacoma restaurant. He ran it till his failing health. He is survived by his wife, Catherine,; his parents, Mr and Mrs L. WOOD of Saginaw and two sisters and a brother. The remains were sent to Saginaw for burial and his wife went with them. 1901 August 14 Wednesday--Mrs Emma THOMPSON, of Waterworks Street, Calumet who has been visiting in the iron country died very suddenly Monday morning in the Champion mine location. The remains reached Calumet last night and the funeral will be held this afternoon at the Norwegian Lutheran church in Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. A husband and a one-year-old child are left to mourn her. MARRIAGE 1901 August 14 Wednesday-- Richard COAD of Ely, Minnesota married Miss Eleanor TREBILCOCK, daughter of William TREBILCOCK of Lake Linden last night at the home of the brides father. The mother, sister and two brothers, one is Will, of the groom of Ely, Minnesota were present. They will live in Ely, Minnesota where the groom works for one of the mining companies. CORNISH? DEATH 1901 August 15 Thursday-- William GOGGIN, aged 58 years, died in the Quincy mine yesterday, by falling ground in the mine. He was born in Ireland and moved to America at the age of 20 years. Not long after moving to the copper country he married Miss Ellen GOGGIN, who survives him. He worked at various mines in the copper country. The children who mourn him are Mrs Dennis LEARY of Leadville, Colorado; Mrs McSHANE of Victor, Colorado; Patrick and Phillip of Salt Lake City, Utah; William, Michael, John, Dennis, Kate, Nellie and May all at home. The funeral will be held at St Patrick’s church, Hancock, next Sunday morning. The burial will be at the Lakeside cemetery. She was born in 1851 in Ireland and came from there, with her parents, in 1864, to Calumet. Six years later, she married John STACK, and moved to the Franklin location. The have lived in Hancock vicinity and raised 7 children. The six surviving are-- Mrs John HOWARD of Lake Linden; Misses Nellie, Mary, Katherine and John, all 4 live at home. James lives in Mexico. The funeral will be held Monday from St Patrick’s church; Hancock Burial will be at the Old Catholic cemetery, Hancock 1901 August 17 Saturday- Matt AMALA, one of the trammers who was injured and then died due a mine accident at the Tamarack mine Thursday night, at the Tamarack hospital. He was 35 years old and single. The funeral will take place Sunday morning from St Joseph’s church. . The others who died Thursday night in the same accident were Richard TREZONA; will be buried Sunday, he was 26 years old and leaves a wife and one child. NEWS ITEM 1901 August 30 Friday-- William HARRY, his daughter, Maine and his son Joe, came visiting from their home in Detroit to the copper county. Mr HARRY for many years was living in the area and worked in the different areas. He now is a member of the legislature of Michigan from Detroit. DEATHS 1901 August 31 Saturday-- Andrew POSTI, aged 45 years, died Thursday night at Peter STEJNBACK’s saloon in Hancock, from too much drink. He was born in Finland and worked on the streets of Houghton the last couple of months. For the past few months he had been drinking hard despite the entreaties of his nephews in Hurontown., who were notified of his death at once. His burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton.
