She was married at Clinton, Wisconsin, her former home, to Mr. COPPO, three years ago and since than has made her home in Calumet. She leaves her husband, Mother, and several brothers and sisters who make their home in Yellow Jacket. The funeral will take place tomorrow at St Mary's Church, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 1 Tuesday - Mrs. BrittaKaisa NELSON, wife of Jeff NELSON of Allouez, Keweenaw County, aged 76 years, died yesterday. The funeral will take place today and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 1 - MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Gottfried SCHNEIDER and Mary HERMAN, both of Atlantic mine DEATHS 1901 January 2 Wednesday - Mrs. Anna DODGE, wife of Dr Wm H. DODGE, of Hancock, died at St Luke's hospital, Chicago, Illinois on New Years eve, while there on a 10 day vacation with her husband. Her remains were brought to their Houghton home today. Her maiden name was Anna DALEY. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the family residence and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 January 2 - Mrs. John POLLARD, aged 24 years, died at her Laurium home yesterday, of tuberculosis. The funeral will be Thursday at Sacred Heart church and burial at Lake View Cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGES 1901 January 2 Wednesday - George LLOYD of Duluth, Minnesota wed Miss Emma WINKLER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred WINKLER, at their home in Houghton, on New Years Eve. The bridesmaid was Miss Edith WINKLER and the best man was Walter S. LLOYD, brother of the groom. They will live in Duluth. 1901 January 4 Friday - Wm E. PARNALL, JR, son of Capt Wrn E. PARNALL assistant superintendent at the Tamarack Mine, of Calumet wed Miss Mabel MITCHELL of Erie, Colorado, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph MITCHELL on 1900 December 20. They will make their home at Calumet in a new home. CORNISH? DEATH 1901 January 4 Friday - Mrs. Mary HORE, aged 85 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ellen WILSON of Lake Linden, of old age on Tuesday morning. Three children mourn her- two sons-George of Calumet and James of Lake Linden and Mrs. WILSON. The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Lake Linden Congregational Church and burial in the old cemetery, Lake Linden. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND on 1815 September 20. From there she moved to the Bruce mines in Ontario, Canada where she lived for some time before coming to the copper country. She lived 20 years in the Ontonagon county mining area. The past 20 years she has lived in Lake Linden. Her husband died over 35 years ago. A sister still lives in CORNWALL. 1901 January 4 - MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Jasper W. OLSON and Miss Minnie ADAMS, both of Osceola MARRIAGE 1901 January 5 Saturday - Jasper W. OLSON wed Miss Minnie ADAMS, both of Osceola, Thursday night at the home of the bride's sister at Osceola. Rev Ivey of the Osceola Methodist church performed the ceremony. DEATHS 1901 January 5 Saturday - Mrs. Mary ADAMS, aged 50 years, died at the home of her son at the Florida mine location yesterday. The funeral will be held Sunday from the house and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 5 Saturday - The remains of Mrs. Henry SAMPSON, who died at Norway, Michigan on Thursday night, will be brought to Houghton for burial. They will be taken the home of Richard SAMPSON; her father in Hurontown and the funeral will be Sunday morning from the home and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 January 6 Sunday - The funeral of Mrs. Minnie DINGMAN who died at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock, was held from St Patrick's church, Hancock yesterday morning. Burial was at the Old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. Her home was at the Arcadian mine location. She is survived by her husband who is working at Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County and is unable to attend the funeral. 1901 January 6 - MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Christopher VOELKER and Miss Annie KOPP, both of Quincy Township 1901 January 8 - John Edvart NEVANPERA and Mary MICHAELSON, both of Atlantic mine Andro AHO of Boston location and Ainna Houta YOKI of Hancock DEATH 1901 January 8 Tuesday - The funeral of Mrs. Thomas PAULSON, who died last Friday, was held Monday afternoon. She had been ill for several months. Services were held at the Red Jacket Finnish Church and burial was at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEMS 1901 January 8 Tuesday - Will CRUZE arrived in Calumet yesterday from Iron Mountain, Michigan and has taken a position as assistant accountant at the State Savings Bank of Laurium. 1901 January 8 Tuesday - Wrn VINCENT of Osceola location, left Sunday for New York where he will board a steamer to go to CORNWALL, ENGLAND where he expects to spend some time visiting friends and relatives. DEATH 1901 January 8 Tuesday - Mrs. Peter ABRAMSON, aged 32 years died at her home in Laurium. She had been ill since Christmas. She is survived by her husband and two children. Burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM 1901 January 8 Tuesday - George W. RAIMER departed from Houghton for Butte, Montana where he has accepted a position. He had been a student at the Houghton College of Mines. DEATHS 1901 January 9 Wednesday - Clovis TOURANGEAU, aged 69 years, an old and well known resident of Houghton, died at his home yesterday from pneumonia. He was a building contractor and built many of the well known buildings of Houghton. He is survived by his wife and four children- Wrn L; Mrs. Robert VENN, both of Champion mine; Frank of Houghton and Jessie at home. He was born May 1832 in Tilbury East, Canada. He came to Houghton from Detroit in 1856 and has lived here ever since. He married Miss Emma NEWCOMBE, daughter of Capt Wm NEWCOMBE of Isle Royale mine. The funeral will be Thursday afternoon and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 January 9 - Horace N. CARLEY, aged 74 years, died at St Joseph's hospital, Hancock yesterday of a brain hemorrhage. For the past 5 months he lived at the Arcadian location and for 20 years before that at Calumet. For a number years prior he lived in Keweenaw County. He is survived by his wife and 4 children- Mrs. M. H. KROPP of Calumet; James E. of Trimountain ; Horace N. and George both of Coarse Gold, California. The services will be held at the home of Mrs. KROPP on Friday afternoon and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 10 - MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Waino Alex LILGEQUIST and Miss Mary PERONEN, both of Kenton. The bride to be is 16 years old. MARRIAGE 1901 January 11 Friday- Charles ERICKSON wed Miss Elizaberg GEIGER, daughter of Mr. Charles GEIGER of Hancock. The marriage was performed at Hancock. The groom is employed at the Calumet hospital. They will live in Laurium. DEATH 1910 January 11 Friday - Mrs. James DUQUETTE of the Wolverine location died Wednesday morning. The funeral will be held at St Louis church, Calumet on Saturday morning. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGE 1901 January 11 Friday - Asa A. STANNARD wed Miss Mamie C. HOOPER daughter of Capt and Mrs.Thomas HOOPER, both of Rockland, Ontonagon County, on Wednesday at the parent's home in Victoria, Michigan CORNISH? DEATHS 1901 January 12 Saturday - Matt NICH, aged 27 years, employed at the Osceola mine, died Thursday night while at work at the 30th level, a piece of vein fell on him killing him instantly. He leaves a wife in the old country - The funeral will take place tomorrow at St Joseph's church, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 12 Saturday - Frank MORSETTE, aged 69 years, an old resident of Houghton, died yesterday morning at his Swedetown home. He is survived by one son and two daughters, one of his sons was killed in the Philippines while serving as a private in the US Army. He was for many years in charge of the late John CHASSELL's farms. The funeral will be held Sunday at St Ignatius Catholic Church in Houghton and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1901 January 13 Sunday - Samuel VIAL, aged 32 years, unmarried, died yesterday morning of pneumonia. He was an employee of the surface crew at the Quincy mine. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at the Hancock Methodist church. He will be buried in the old cemetery in Hancock. 1901 January 13 Sunday - Mrs. Josephine LAPIN, wife of Edward LAPIN, aged 25 years, died at the Arcadian mine, after confinement. She leaves a husband and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Napoleon BEAUDOIN, of Lake Linden. The funeral will be held Monday. NEWS ITEM 1901 January 13 Sunday - Mr. and Mrs. James B. PAPISH, both of Calumet; bride is 16 years old DEATH 1901 January 15 Tuesday - Charles TROMBOLE, aged 56 years, died Sunday morning, at his Calumet home of consumption. He leaves a wife and four children, one, Paul works in the Calumet post office, to mourn him. He was born in Stallopunon, Prusssia 1844 March 31. He came to Lake Superior copper country in 1871 and first settled in L'Anse, Baraga County where he resided for a great many years, than afterwards going to Keweenaw County and later coming to Red Jacket, in the days when the town was just laid out. He was a barber by trade. The funeral will take place Wednesday at the Calumet Congregational church and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEMS 1901 January 15 Tuesday - Wm HILL of Calumet left yesterday for Phoenix, Arizona where he hopes to improve his health, which had been poor for some time past. He has lived in Calumet for the past 34 years and for the past 30 years has not been outside of the county. CORNISH ? 1901 January 15 Tuesday - Peter BEAUDREAU, of Lake Linden, left Sunday morning for Butte, Montana, where he has accepted a position. Mrs. BEAUDREAU left yesterday morning and joined her husband at Champion. DEATHS 1901 January 16 Wednesday - Mrs. Louis SHERIDAN, aged 29 years, died yesterday morning at her home in Laurium. She leaves a husband and 4 small children to mourn her. The remains will be shipped to Duluth, Minnesota, her brother who lives in Duluth has wired the funds for the shipping of the body. 1901 January 16 Wednesday - The funeral of the late Johana CHRISTIANSON of Raymbaultown, will take place this afternoon at the Finnish Lutheran church of Pine Street, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She was 75 years old and died of consumption. MARRIAGE 1901 January 16 Wednesday - Leo FRIDNETTE wed Miss Nan MAYWORM, both of South Linden, at St Cecelia's church, Lake Linden, yesterday morning at 7 AM. At the Houghton House Hotel of Houghton by Rev MOON of Grace Methodist Church, Houghton, last night. The groom, is a moulder at the CARROLL foundry. They will live in Houghton. 1901 January 17 Thursday - Herbert RICH wed Miss Ameila PENPRASE, last evening at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Mary J. PENPRASE of Hancock. The bridesmaid was Miss Jennie PENPRASE and the best man was Edwin PENPRASE, sister and brother of the bride. They will live in West Hancock. CORNISH ? DEATHS 1901 January 17 Thursday - The funeral of the late John MATTSON, who was crushed to death by rolling logs in Sidnaw, on Monday, was held today at the home of his brother, Matt MATTSON of Dollar Bay. Burial will be at Lakeside cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 17 Thursday - The funeral of the late Hans Ludwig CHRISTIANSON, took place yesterday at the Finnish Lutheran church on Pine Street, Calumet. Burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. His death is particularly sad as his mother died a few weeks ago of consumption as he did. Several other young members of the family died of consumption. MARRIAGE 1901 January 17 Thursday - James Grant MCCALLUM of Marquette, Marquette County wed Miss Hattie May WILLIAMS of West Houghton, at high noon yesterday at the home of her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth WILLIAMS of West Houghton. Miss Anna SLOCKETT of Houghton was bridesmaid and the best man was Wm J. PENHALLEGON of Calumet. They will live in Calumet. 1901 January 17 - MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Vinka MOHOHELE and Miss Antonia DIROBRAIDICK, both of Red Jacket DEATH 1901 January 18 Saturday - Mrs. Mary HOSKING, aged 78 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles PRYOR of Houghton yesterday afternoon of pneumonia. She is an old resident of the copper country, for the past 20 years she had lived in Houghton. Prior to that she lived at the Franklin mine, Pewabic mine and Calumet. The funeral will be held at Grace Methodist church on Sunday afternoon and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. She was born in PENZANCE, CORNWALL< ENGLAND in August 1822. Her maiden name was Mary EDWARDS. In 1840 she married John HOSKING. Three of their 8 children are living- WM HOSKING, Mrs. Charles PRYOR of Houghton and Mrs. Matthew DENNIS of the Franklin mine. In 1867 with her husband and children she immigrated to the United States. The children who died were John E. HOSKING; Mrs. Marmaduke TREBILCOCK; Thomas HOSKING; and Richard HOSKING. All were born in CORNWALL and died in the copper country. Sunday - Andrew NIEMA, died due to a fatal mistake of a mine engineer at the Franklin mine, yesterday morning. The engineer hoisted the skip up and Mr. NIEMA was in the back of it and fell off down the shaft to his death. The engineer was Octavio BATTISTONNI. He leaves a wife and one child to mourn him at the Franklin location. The funeral was held at the Finnish Lutheran church in Hancock yesterday and the burial was at the Old cemetery in Hancock. 1901 January 22 Tuesday - Mrs. Victor BEAUCHINE, died suddenly at her home on Laurium of heart failure. She leaves a husband and a family of grown up children. The remains will be shipped to St Pierre, Quebec, Canada where she will be buried. 1901 January 22 Tuesday - The funeral of the late Mrs. Henry KILPLA of Atlantic mine location, will be held this afternoon from the Hancock Finnish church and burial will be at the old Hancock cemetery. 1901 January 22 Tuesday - Mrs. Amanda JARNU, aged 52 years, died at her home in Laurium on Sunday and the funeral was held at the Finnish Lutheran church on Pine Street, Calumet yesterday. Burial was held at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 22 Tuesday - Daniel 0'BRIEN of Laurium, died early Sunday morning at his home, due to his advanced age. In a recent letter from him states he is much improved and the climate is like May in Calumet and that he feels better than he has for many months. CORNISH ? 1901 January 24 Thursday - Harry ROGERS was given a farewell party last night at the Arcadian mine location schoolhouse by a number of friends. He will depart today for Nicauraga from Hancock for the benefit of his health. CORNISH? MARRIAGE 1901 January 24 Thursday - Robert McCLEMENTS of Redridge wed Miss H. May JENKS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar JENKS, at her parent's home in South Lake Linden last evening. Miss Emma SATTERLY was maid of honor and the best man was Alvin JENKS, brother of the groom. The Rev H. John McCLEMENTS, brother of the groom of Atkinsin, Illinois, officiated at the wedding. They will live at Redridge NEWS ITEM 1901 January 24 Thursday - James GEORGE of the Centennial mine location, received a message yesterday informing him of the death of his mother in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. CORNISH ? DEATHS 1901 January 25 Friday - John Haven THOMPSON, aged 67 years, an employee of the Calumet and Hecla Mining company for the last 26 years and a resident of Calumet for all that time, died yesterday afternoon at his home. He died of stomach trouble. He was born in 1834 in New York State where his relatives still make their home. He came to Houghton County in 1875 and for many years worked on the night force in the mine. Later taking a position on the surface work at the Hecla mine. He leaves a wife to mourn him. His remains were shipped to Port Ann, New York for burial. 1901 January 25 Friday - Wrn TOLL, aged 56 years, died at his home in the Florida mine location yesterday. He was taken ill last Tuesday and his health failed him each day. He leaves a wife and 6 children to mourn him. The funeral will be held Sunday with burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1901 January 25 - MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Sam CENCLCH and Miss Catherine BRISKI, she is 17 years old, both of Calumet DEATHS 1901 January 27 Sunday- Cornelius O'NEIL aged 26 years, a well known young man of Calumet, died yesterday afternoon at his Calumet home from tuberculosis. Burial will be at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. Funeral will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet. 1901 January 29 Tuesday - Johnson GLANVILLE, aged 48 years, a well known and respected citizen of Tamarack City, died at his home yesterday morning after a lengthy illness of enlargement of the spleen. He has been confined to his bed for almost a year. He went to Dodgeville, Wisconsin last year for 8 weeks hoping to improve his health. A wife and three children survive him, 2 sons-Percy and James H. both of Tamarack City; and Mrs. John B. CHAPPLE of the Franklin mine location and Mrs. Joseph RILLSTONE of South Lake Linden. A sister, Mrs. John HOSKINGS and a brother, Wrn John both live in Lake Linden. He was born in Dodgeville, Wisconsin 1852 July 4, of CORNISH parents. The services were held at St Joseph church and burial was at the Old Catholic Church, Hancock. 1901 February 1 Friday - The funeral of the late Mr. Alois SCHULER took place yesterday morning. Services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Calumet and the burial was at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. The deceased was one of the early settlers of the copper country and has made his home in Calumet for many years. NEWS ITEM 1901 February 2 Saturday- Harvey JOHNSON, of Calumet, left Thursday for New York to take a steamer to Stockland, Sweden where he will spend 3 months visiting. DEATH 1901 February 2 Saturday - Jacob ENOJARVI and Isaac NISKA, two miners employed at the Atlantic mine, were instantly killed by a mine blast yesterday. They entered the mine before giving time for the fuse to set off the blast. Mr. ENOJARVI leaves a wife and one child. Mr. LISKA was a single man. Both funerals will be held Sunday afternoon from the Finnish church at the Atlantic mine and the burials will be at the Atlantic mine cemetery. 1901 February 3 Sunday - Martin DEE, aged 74 years, died at his home in South Lake Linden, yesterday of heart failure. He had lived in the copper country the last 40 years. He worked in Keweenaw and Houghton counties in the mines most of the time. He was born in Watrforf, Ireland. He leaves a wife and 10 children- Martin and Wm of Butte, Montana; Joseph and Thomas of Anaconda, Montana; Richard of Deer Lodge, Montana; George of South Lake Linden; Nellie, Agnes, Nora and Dyne all at home. The funeral will be held Tuesday from St Cecelia's church Lake Linden and burial at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. 1901 February 3 Sunday -Wmma, wife of P. HARVALA, the Finnish school teacher of Eighth Street, Calumet, died Friday afternoon after a long illness from lung trouble. She leaves a husband, two sons and one daughter to mourn her. SALILNEN of Calumet John Matthew McCOIG of Detroit, Michigan and Anna LAMORE of Calumet Richard BICE of the Arcadian location and Emma MITCHELL of Quincy Township DEATH 1901 February 5 Tuesday - Captain James SOWDEN, aged 75 years, one of the first men interested in mining copper in the copper country and was known among the pioneers of this district, died at his Calumet home last night. His health was failing the last few years. He was born in CAMBORNE, CORNWALL, ENGLAND 1826 January 22 and came to America long before the Civil War and settled in Keweenaw County in the early days of the copper mining. For a number of years he worked in the Keweenaw copper mines and was a mine Captain in the old Phoenix mine there. Some 21 years ago he took charge of the Osceola mine. He was a justice of the peace for 4 years but gave it up due to ill health. He leaves two children, Mrs. John McNAMARA who lives at the Sowden residence and Mrs. Joseph UNSWORTH of Chicago, Illinois. A 3rd child, a son, John W. SOWDEN died last May in Washington, D.C. The burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. CORNISH? 1901 Feb 7- MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED BY THE HOUGHTON COUNTY CLERK Henri HOKKINEN and Miss Anna Maria TOLONEN, both of Calumet DEATHS 1901 February 8 Friday - Ernest MITCHELL, aged 24 years old, was fatally injured at the Quincy mine yesterday morning. He was taken to St Joseph's hospital in Hancock and died at once. The skip hit him crushing him to the ground. He is single and worked for two years at Lake Linden and on New Years Day this year came to Hancock and began work at the Quincy mine. His remains were shipped to Dodgeville, Wisconsin yesterday afternoon for burial. His father lives there. 1901 February 9 Saturday - Captain William JACKA, aged 69 years, well known in Calumet and Keweenaw county, where he was employed for many years, died at his home at Ashland, Northern Wisconsin last Thursday. He was mining captain at the old Copper Falls mine. He was a brother of the late George JACKA, the father of George JACKA of Calumet; also Wrn JACKA, the well known liveryman; He had been making his home at Ashland after leaving Calumet and will be buried at Ashland. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND 1832 January 30 and was brought up at mining work. He spent two years in South America for a London Mining company. He returned to England in 1854 and than came to the copper country and to the Minnesota Mining Company. He returned to England in 186. He than came to the Lake Superior copper country and worked till 1877. He mined in different states including Wisconsin, New York and others. In 1881 he went back to Copper Falls mine as a Captain till he gave up mining. DEATH 1901 February 10 Sunday - Jane BLACK, aged 54 years, died last night at the home of her sister, Mrs. Alexander McAULEY of the Pewabic mine location. She died of heart disease. The funeral takes place this afternoon from the Laurium Baptist church. Her maiden name was Mary LEEK; she was wed at age 17 to Nathaniel Allen RAND, who died 50 years ago. She was born on the Wabash River, in Illinois, 1817 Feb 15. . She was the mother of six children, and 4 are left to mourn her-- Mrs. L. J. LEIGH of Houghton; and 3 sons- G. W. RAND of Freeport, Illinois; R. C. RAND of Cresco, Iowa and J. C. RAND, somewhere in Iowa. The funeral will take place Wednesday at the Lake Linden Methodist church and burial will be at the Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. 1901 February 13 Wednesday - Mrs. Thomas INGRAM died at her Hancock home yesterday afternoon after being sick only 4 or 5 weeks. from Brights disease. She has lived in Hancock for many years. She leaves a husband and a family of grown up children. One son, W. J. INGRAM of Chassell, died about four months ago. He was single, and conducted a small shop at home. He was a resident of the copper country for fourteen years, coming here from Bessemer, Minnesota. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and came to this country 33 years ago. He was an employee of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company for a number of years and worked for other mining companies. He leaves a widow and four sons- Edwin, superintendent of the Franklin stamp mill at Point Mill; George, blacksmith at the Quincy mine; Samuel J.
