ARCHAMBEAU will leave Calumet today for Butte, Montana where she will make her future home. DEATHS 1900 October 2 Tuesday--Frank ALBI, the Italian man who accidentally shot himself about five weeks ago and was brought to St Joseph's hospital, Hancock, died there Sunday night. He was out hunting when the gun went off by accident and the shot went into his face, eyes and hands. Six shots were taken out of the eyes when he came to the hospital. He was 30 years old and his only relatives in this area are two cousins in Laird. 1900 October 2 Tuesday- The funeral of Matthew, the 18 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. John KNEEBONE, who died Saturday, was held yesterday afternoon at the family residence. Burial was at the Old cemetery, Hancock. CORNISH? 1900 October 2 Tuesday—Mrs. Jane BERRYMAN, aged 48 years old, died at her home in West Hancock Sunday. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. Her husband died several years ago. The funeral will be held this afternoon and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. NEWS ITEM 1900 October 2 Tuesday-- Albert HOCKING, who has been employed at the Centennial mine for time past, has given up his position and gone to Butte, Montana, where he will reside. CORNISH ? MARRIAGES 1900 October 2 Tuesday-- The Wolverine mine location was the scene of two weddings last Saturday-all are from Wolverine. 1. Joseph YUSKOVICH wed Miss Annie CORDYASK 2. Wm MIIKAELSON and Ida SIMULA They will live in the Wolverine mine location. NEWS ITEM 1900 October 3 Wednesday- Miss Nellie TREVILLYAN of Grover, visited friends in Calumet yesterday. DEATHS 1900 October 3 Wednesday—Mrs. Greyia HENDRICKSON, aged, 78 years, died at her son's Calumet home on Monday evening. She leaves four children who live in the copper country. The funeral will take place at the Pine Street Finnish church today and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1900 October 3 Wednesday- Mrs. Jane GRENFE, aged 23 years, died at her home at Tamarack late Monday night. She leaves a husband and two small children to mourn her. She has lived here but 8 months. The funeral will be held at the Tamarack church Thursday afternoon and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. Her infant son who died at the same time will be buried also. He had been unwell for some time and had been drinking heavily of late. He was taken to jail Monday. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn him. The funeral will be held today, and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. NEWS ITEM 1900 October 7 Sunday--John H. DEATH 1900 October 10 Wednesday- Miss Della MATHEWS, aged 26 years, died at the Newberry Insane Asylum at Newberry, Michigan her mother Mrs. Catherine MATHEWS of Calumet was notified and ordered that the body be shipped to Calumet for burial. She died yesterday afternoon. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. JENKINS and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She was born at the Cliff mine location, Keweenaw County. She leaves a mother, 1 brother and four sister, they are Mrs. George HOATSON of Calumet; Mrs. John GEORGE of Newton; Mrs. John BERRYMAN of Rockland Street and Mrs. Wm JENKINS of Albion. The brother is Wm J. MA THEWS of Albion. MARRIAGE 1900 October 12 Friday--Dunbar D. SMITH, superintendent of the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County wed Miss Alice WILLIAMS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Lauron WILLIAMS on Wednesday at Appleton, Wisconsin. They will reside at the Phoenix mine. MARRIAGES 1900 October 12 Friday-- A double wedding was performed at St Ignatius Catholic Church, Houghton yesterday morning, all parties of Houghton; 1. Toney WEBBER wed Miss Rose E. MARTIN, they will live at Hancock 2. George W. ROBINS wed Miss Mary M. MARTIN; they will live at Houghton The brides were given away by their father- Anthony MARTIN. The brides were attended by two little girls, Misses Laleen KRELLWITZ and Julia FRYE. DEATH 1900 October 12 Friday—Mrs. Jane Bone WATSON, aged 63 years, wife of Superintendent Wm C. WATSON of the Osceola mine, died at the family residence at the mine yesterday morning. The funeral will take place Sunday at the family residence and burial will be at the Lake View cemetery, Calumet. She was born on 1837 July 10 at Pelton, County Durham, England, she united in marriage to Wm C. WATSON on 1850 Oct 12. In March, 3 years later they sailed from Liverpool England for McKeesport, Pennsylvania. They left there very soon and landed at Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County 1862 May 5 and located at the Clifff mine but in 1865 moved to Ontonagon county and he worked at the National mine. He returned to the Cliff mine in 1867 and remained until 1877 when they went to the Osceola mine and stayed there where he has been in charge of the mine. She leaves a husband, 3 sons and three daughters --The sons are, Ralph of Arguas -Calientas, Mexico; John B. engineer at the Tamarack mine; and James R., dentist at Red Jacket; three daughters are- Mrs. W. M. HARRIS of Tamarack,Jr ; Mrs. Joseph G. KPHLHAAS of Opechee mine; Mrs. C. H. NEWS ITEM 1900 October 16 Tuesday-- Richard JEFFERY and family, of Tamarack, leave in a short time on their way to CORNWALL, ENGLAND, where he expects to live in the future. His health has not been good for many years. He has been at Tamarack for many years in the mine. DEATH 1900 Sadie, the 11 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam MAKI, died of cholera infection at the Tamarack mill location yesterday. The funeral will be held today. DEATH 1900 October 16 Tuesday- The funeral of Mrs. Oscar BLANKSTROM was held Sunday afternoon from the Hancock Finnish church and burial at the old Hancock cemetery. NEWS ITEM 1900 October 16 Tuesday-- John HARVEY, formerly employed with Johnson VIVIAN, Jr and Company, in Laurium, but who left Calumet a year ago to live permanently in CORNWALL, ENGLAND his birth place and secure work there, arrived in Calumet a short time ago. He says he decided he has no desire to live the remainder of his life in CORNWALL, he said the copper country is the best place in all the world to live. He left his wife and family in CORNWALL and will send for them when he gets settled more. MARRIAGES 1900 October 16 Tuesday-- Eugene ROWE of Anaconda, Montana wed Miss Ida HOPF of Lake Linden at the home of the brides parents in Lake Linden yesterday afternoon. 1900 October 16 Tuesday-- Franklin DAVIDSON wed Miss Mabel SNYDER, both of Redridge, in the court room at the Houghton County Courthouse by Justice Charles O.OLIVIER of Hancock yesterday afternoon. The bride was attended by Miss Jennie B.TAYLOR, deputy county clerk, and the groom was attended by Attorney E. LAWTON of Hancock. 1900 October 17 Wednesday-- Dennis M. COUGHLIN of Hancock wed Miss Charlotte LEAN, daughter of Sheriff and Mrs. F. LEAN, at the brides parents home in Houghton, last evening. The bridesmaid was Miss Josephine LEAN, sister of the bride and the best man was Thomas RYAN, of Hancock. They will reside in Hancock. 1900 October 17 Wednesday-- Albert M.THOMAS of Houghton wed Miss Mary GMAHLING, at the home of the brides mother in West Houghton, yesterday evening. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Lena GMAHLING and the best man was Van FOLLANSDBEE. They will live in Houghton. DEATH 1900 October 17 Wednesday-- James H, ROBERTS, who has been employed at the Isle Royale mine, died at his home at that location last evening. He was 39 years old and leaves a wife and six children who arrived here from CORNWALL, ENGLAND about a week ago. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon. MARRIAGES 1900 October 18 Thursday-- Alfred REED wed Miss Ellen ANDREWS last Saturday evening at the new home of the happy couple at Tamarack location. Stephen JOHNS and Ada ANDREWS, sister of the bride, were the attendants. They will live in Tamarack. CORNISH ? 1900 October 18- Thursday- John SANDERS of Hancock wed Miss Lily, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. KUTSCHIED, at the home of the brides parents in Hurontown, last night. The bridesmaid was Agnes ADAMS and the best man was Nicholas SANDERS. They will live at West Hancock. MARRIAGES 1900 October 18 Thursday-- George P. BUTNAM wed Miss Annie E. SAVOY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George SAVOY, last night in the parsonage of S t Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Emma SAVOY and the groom by William H. HANKEY. They will reside in Houghton. 1900 October 19 Friday-- Henry LETCHER, Jr wed Miss Annie PROBST, last night at the home of the brides parents in Hecla. The maid of honor was Miss Pollie PROBST, the brides sister, and the best man was James LETCHER. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred H. PASSMORE of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan attended the wedding as Mrs. PASSMORE was the former Miss Jennie LETCHER, the grooms sister. She was married last Wednesday to Mr. PASSMORE at the Soo and they live there. CORNISH ? NEWS ITEM 1900 October 19 Friday- The reported death of James ROBERTS at the Isle Royale mine Monday night, brings suffering and want to the family. He had been unable to send money to his family in CORNWALL, ENGLAND to bring them to his home here as he was to ill to work. So friends in CORNWALL took up a collection and they were able to travel to New York. The wife with 6 children, found out she had little money left and could not travel to the copper country, so she went to officers of the shipping line in New York and told them of her plight. They took up a collection that gave them funds to travel to Isle Royale. They are still in need of funds to live and a plea was made by the newspaper for people to aid them.. MARRIAGE 1900 October 20 Saturday-- Charles C. CARR of St Ignace, Michigan wed Miss Ella PAYNE, the daughter of Alderman and Mrs. Samuel P. PAYNE of Hancock , at the Pewabic Methodist church parsonage on Thursday evening. They will live in Cleveland, Ohio where the groom will work with his uncle in landscape gardening. DEATH 1900 October 20 Saturday- Mrs. Elizabeth HEINEMANN, aged 75 years old, died at the home of her son-in-law, John BRYDEN, at Calumet, last night. For the past 35 years she lived in Calumet and before that spent several years at the Cliff mine in Keweenaw County. Her husband, Martin, died seven years ago. Besides her daughter, she is survived by one son, Adam of Ruppe's store, Calumet and a brother, Adam BETZING of Detroit, Michigan. While bailing hay with his crew, the bailer fell on him killing him at once. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn him. The funeral will be held today. 1900 October 23 Tuesday—Mrs. John LAURI died at her home at North Tamarack Saturday, aged 21 years old, the burial was yesterday at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1900 October 23 Tuesday-- Charles KJELLGREN, aged 61 years old, died at his Calumet home last Saturday night. He had suffered from asthma for many years. He leaves a wife, two daughters—Mrs. Alberta MERTZ and Mrs. Alma TONQUIST and one son, Charles. The funeral will be today at the Swedish Lutheran church, Calumet and the burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1900 October 23 Tuesday-- John TEARLE was found dead in the hold of the ship BULGARIA, which is tied up at the Union coal dock, on Sunday noon. It is supposed he fell down to the bottom of the ship's hold. The funeral was held yesterday. He leaves a wife and six children. NEWS ITEM 1900 October 23 Tuesday-- Miss Mabel BRULE, left yesterday morning from Lake Linden for Butte, Montana, where she has accepted a position as stenographer for a well known lawyer. Her father Justice E. DEATH 1900 October 24 Wednesday--Henry ALBRIGHT, of South Lake Linden for the past 14 years aged 33 years, died of consumption at the at the home of his mother in Lake Linden. He leaves a widowed mother, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He had a blacksmith shop is South Lake Linden. The funeral will be today at The Lake Linden Lutheran church ant burial at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. MARRIAGE 1900 October 24 Wednesday-- Frank BOYD of South Lake Linden wed Miss Josephine HERMES of Hancock on Monday in Houghton. McDONALD and Nellie CARDIS, both of Calumet DEATHS 1900 October 25 Thursday-- Thomas UREN, aged 63 years old, died at the Central Mine location, Keweenaw County last night of asthma which he had been suffering with for years. He leaves four children- Mrs. Capt. MORGAN of Meadow; George, also of Meadow; one son at Butte, Montana and a daughter at home. He lived at Central mine for 25 years. The funeral will take place on Sunday with services at Central mine Methodist church. Burial will be at Eagle Harbor cemetery, Keweenaw County. CORNISH ? 1900 October 25 Thursday-- Miss Bessie MUNDY, aged 25 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm MUNDY of Calumet, died yesterday morning at the family residence of spinal problem affecting the brain. She leaves her parents, 4 sisters and two brothers, Mrs. John BONDS; and Misses Nellie, Nettie and May MUNDY; all living at home; John of North Tamarack; and James at home. The funeral will take place at home and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. MARRIAGES 1900 October 25 Thursday-- Ollie KIRCHEN of Lake Linden wed Miss Lillian BERRYMAN of Laurium at Christ Church, Calumet yesterday morning. 1900 October 25 Thursday--Amie NORMAND wed Miss Clara PICHE, both of Lake Linden Thursday morning at St Joseph's church, Lake Linden. DEATH 1900 October 27 Saturday-- Word was received here yesterday that Ernest TAMBLYN had died in Lead City, South Dakota that morning. His brother, Fred TAMBLYN, left on the train last night to Lead City to return the body to Calumet for burial at Lake View cemetery. He was 33 years old and was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He leaves his father and his family who live in CORNWALL. His brother is the only relative in America. He lived in South Lake Linden for 8 years. DAHIMAN, both of Mohawk DEATHS 1900 October 31 Wednesday-- Christopher BIRK, an aged resident of Keweenaw County, died there last Sunday and was buried the Eagle River cemetery. He lived there many years. He has no known relatives in this country. 1900 November 1 Thursday-- John MAKANDER, is the name of the unknown man who was sent down from Calumet Sunday to be taken to the Houghton County Poor Farm but was so sick on his arrival, he was sent to St Joseph's hospital, Hancock where he died Monday night. He was a total stranger in these parts and it is not known if he has any friends or relatives. He was buried in potters field. MARRIAGE 1900 November 1 Thursday-- Henry J. COLLINS wed Miss Margaret A. BROWN, both of Calumet, last evening, at the home of the brides mother, Mrs. Jennette BROWN in Calumet. The couple will live in Laurium. NEWS ITEM 1900 November 2 Friday-- The total population of the Upper Peninsula is 202,000. Houghton County- 60,000 an increase of 30,000 over 1890 Marquette County is 41,000 with Ishpeming City 13,250 as part of the higher figure Menominee is 12,800 Sault Ste Marie is 10,400 Ironwood is 9700 Escanaba is 9,542 Iron Mountain is 9,242 DEATH 1900 November 2 Friday- The funeral of the late Mrs. Elizaberg ROBERTS, aged 80 years, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph HICKS at Dollar Bay, Tuesday evening, was held yesterday afternoon, with services at the Dollar Bay Methodist church. He was unmarried and has other relatives in this county and some in Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. Services will be at the Pewabic Methodist church yesterday and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1900 November 6 Tuesday-- the six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John BEACHMAN of Copper Falls, Keweenaw County, died last Saturday night of scarlet fever. She was buried yesterday at Eagle Harbor cemetery, Keweenaw County. 1900 November 6 Tuesday- Charles SYMONS, a miner who had been employed at the Atlantic mine, died at St Joseph's Hospital, Hancock, yesterday morning. He was single and had several brothers residing at the Atlantic mine. The funeral will be Thursday at the Atlantic Methodist church and burial will be at the Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton MARRIAGE 1900 November 8 Thursday-- Sherman BARNARD, Captain of the steamer THOMAS FRIANT, wed Miss Lila RICHARDS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John RICHARDS, of Hodges Foundry and of Hancock, at the home of the brides parents in Hancock, last evening. They will live in Houghton. DEATHS 1900 November 8 Thursday-- Josephine, wife of Andrew RALAHNIA, of the Wolverine location, age 23 years, died of dropsy yesterday morning at her home. The funeral will take place this morning at St Mary's church, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1900 November 8 Thursday-- Louisa, wife of Arvid SAUKKOJA, died yesterday morning at her home in Yellow Jacket after a brief illness. Her infant child died at the same time. Besides her husband she leaves two infant children. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at St Patrick's church, Hancock and burial at the old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. 1900 November 11 Sunday- Henry Thomas INCH, aged 32 years, of Calumet, employed by the Calumet and Hecla Mining company as a miner, met a sudden death yesterday while at work on the 53rd level of the No 6 shaft of the South Hecla branch of the mine. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn him. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and had been living in this country 15 years. One brother John James INCH also survives him. She died of old age. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and had visited there once. 1900 December 13 Thursday-- John SULLIVAN, aged 70 years, died at his home in West Hancock, Tuesday afternoon. He made his home here for the past 35 years. He was employed at the Detroit and Lake Superior smelting works in Hancock, for a great many years. He died of inflamation of the kidneys. DEATHS 1900 December 18 Tuesday-- Michael HURTIN, aged 70 years, died late Sunday night at his home on a farm near the Houghton County Poor House. His health had been failing him the past few months. Two sons and one daughter survive him- Michae Jr; and Bridget who lived with him and Edward of Hancock. The funeral will be held tomorrow at St Patrick's church, Hancock. Burial will be at the Old Catholic cemetery, Hancock. 1900 December 19 Wednesday—Mrs. Daniel SULLIVAN, aged 62 years, died at her home in Hurontown of a complication of diseases. She is survived by her husband, and seven children. The funeral will be held at St Ignatius Catholic Church, Houghton on Thursday and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. Three sons from Montana arrived yesterday to attend the funeral. DIVORCES 1900 December 19 Wednesday-- Three divorces were granted to people of Calumet yesterday by Jutice Streeter: Isabella E. PADDOCK, wife of Mr. W. R. PADDOCK, the letter carrier, was granted a divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty Gunder JOHNSON, was granted a divorce from her husband, Charles R. JOHNSON, a painter and paper hanger, on the charge of non-support. Mary LARSON secured a divorce from her husband, Andrew LARSON, on the grounds of non-support. NEWS ITEMS 1900 December 19 Wednesday—Mr. and Mrs. Frank COOK of Calumet leave Saturday for Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Mr. COOK has accepted a position. 1900 December 19 Wednesday- Fred HARNER of Laurium , left last night for British Columbia, Canada where he will make his home in the future. Both are well on in years but they made the journey well. CORNISH ? DEATH 1900 December 21 Friday- John TERVO, aged 56 years, died yesterday morning at the Calumet home of his daughter, Mrs. Abram NUATTILLA. He had arrived there but a few weeks ago to spend his remaining days there. He had an operation that resulted in his death. He is survived by his wife, by 9 children, 7 boys and 2 girls, his mother, Mrs. Lena Molton of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin will attend the funeral on Sunday at St Cecelia's church, Lake Linden. Burial will at Mount Calvary cemetery, Lake Linden. He resided at Tamarack city for 15 years and in Calumet for a number of years. 1900 December 21 Friday --Wm PETALA, died yesterday at a mine accident at the Kearsarge mine He was thrown out of the skip by accident and he fell on a rock which killed him. He was taken to the Tamarack hospital and died there. He lived at the Albion location. 1900 December 22 Saturday-- August KREWELLWITZ, SR, aged 71 years, an old and well known resident of Houghton, died at his home yesterday morning. He had lived in Houghton for 46 years. For 26 years he was the Houghton village treasurer. He was born in Germany 1829 January 27 and at age of 25 years he came to America, coming direct to Houghton. He worked for a number of years for Ransome SHELDON in his store. He spent 20 years working for Graham POPE in his store. He was superintendent of the Houghton County POOR FARM for the past 10 years. In February 1873 he married Miss Hernrietta FLEIGE of Houghton. Four children survive him- Mrs. Wm F. STAATS of Great Falls, Montana; Mrs. Wm H. ROWE of Dollar Bay; William A. and Edward C. both of Houghton. The funeral will be held Sunday at 2 PM at the residence and burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1900 December 25 Tuesday—Mrs. Ellen Mary, aged 53 years, wife of Joseph JILBERT of Lake Linden, died at her home on Sunday after a lengthy illness of stomach trouble. Besides her husband she leaves 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls, all who live in Lake Linden, are left to mourn her. The funeral will be at the Lake Linden Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon, with burial at Maple Hill cemetery, Lake Linden. 1900 December 25 Tuesday- Felix, aged 18 years, the son of Felix BOUKKALA, of Calumet, died Sunday afternoon. He had been ill the past 9 months. The funeral will take place at the Finnish Lutheran church on Pine Street, Calumet and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1900 Dec 25- Edna, the 20 year old daughter of Camele GOULLETTE of Laurium, died yesterday of consumption. The funeral will take place at St Louis church, Calumet and burial at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. DEATH 1900 December 27 Thursday-- Daniel McCARTHY, aged 50 years, died from tuberculosis at his home in Hancock on Tuesday morning. He is survived by two brothers-- Patrick, Timothy, and a sister, Catherine. The funeral will be this morning at St Patrick's church, Hancock and burial at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1900 December 27 Thursday-- Christopher GILLIS and Miss Emily SECCOMBE, she has just arrived from CORNWALL, ENGLAND were married at the Calumet Methodist church on Christmas evening. They will live in Calumet. DEATHS 1900 December 27 Thursday-- Anna M. KANGAS, aged 19 years, died yesterday afternoon at the home of her uncle in Raymbaultown, due to tuberculosis. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the Finnish Lutheran church on Pine Street, Calumet and burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet. 1900 December 27 Thursday-- Amos De MARS, aged 50 years, died at his Houghton home yesterday afternoon. He was ailing for some time but was confined to his home a few days. He had lived in Houghton the greater part of his life. He was the janitor at the Armory for the past 10 years. He leaves a wife, 2 children and a father and a mother and several brothers and sisters.
