DEATH 1888 July 5 Thursday-- Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Jeremiah MURPHY of Hancock, aged 60 years, was accidentally killed at the beginning of a horse race when he got in the way of a horse being brought to the starting post and he was run into, knocked down and run over. He died instantly. He leaves a wife and several children. He will be buried in Hancock Catholic cemetery from St. Ann's church. MARRIAGES 1888 July 12 Thursday--Mr. Andrew UREN, head clerk of Atlantic mine, wed Miss Louisa HELMUTH at South Lyon, Michigan last Monday. She formerly taught at the Atlantic school. Their future residence will be at Iron Mountain where he will join as partner in a firm of general merchants. 1888 July 12 Thursday, On Last Tuesday at Lake Linden Catholic church, Mr. Peter HEINER wed Miss Annie PETERS, who came from Germany 3 or 4 weeks ago. They both live in Lake Linden. 1888 July 12 Thursday--Tuesday afternoon at Lake Linden, Mr. Samuel LAFLUER wed Miss Elbina BENOIT, both of Lake Linden. NEWS ITEM 1888 July 12 Thursday-- Captain Thomas HOOPER, who recently had charge of the slate quarries in Baraga County, left his family last Thursday for Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada to be superintendent of the Beaver Mountain silver mine, one of the richest in Canada. MARRIAGES 1888 July 12 Thursday, at St. Ignatius Church, Hancock, Mr. Carl RUHL, the Hancock grocer wed Mrs. KIMMER no Christian name shown) of Hurontown. 1888 July 12 Thursday-- At Central location, at home on June 28, Mr. George FRANCIS wed Miss Lizzy Mary HOLMAN, both of Central mine. DEATHS 1888 July 19 Thursday, Last Sunday, Mrs. Mary J. ANT, wife of Mr. Peter ANT, who live in the settlement back of East Houghton, was buried from St. Ignatius Church, Hancock. She was beyond middle age and had been ill more than a year. 1888 July 19 Thursday, On Monday morning, Fred LITTLE, aged 19 years, died in his Hurontown home of typhoid fever. His father, Mr. LITTLE died about 3 months ago. He was buried Tuesday afternoon, at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. 1888 July 19 Thursday--At St. Joseph's church, Hancock Mr. Wm J. JAMES wed Miss Bertha CARTER of Ripley, yesterday morning, July 18. 1888 July 26 Thursday-At St. Ignatius Church, Houghton, Mr. Patrick DILLON wed Miss Johanne HASSETT, both of Houghton, on Tuesday morning. DEATH 1888 July 26 Thursday--Edward MOYLE, about 40 years old, died from lockjaw at his Hancock home. This illness came on him from an accident two weeks ago in the Huron mine when the toes of one foot were crushed. He leaves a wife and a large family of children, the oldest being only 16 years old. He was buried in Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. CORNISH? MARRIAGE 1888 July 26 Thursday--Mr. Carlos D. SHELDON of Houghton was married on last Tuesday July 17 in Washington City to Miss Dallis W. Dashiell GARDNER. The couple arrived in Houghton on the steamer CHINA last Sunday morning. The marriage was performed by the Rev. Dr. ADDISON, of Trinity Episcopal church, Washington City. DEATHS 1888 Aug 2 Thursday-- Mrs. Catherine SULLIVAN, of more than 70 years old, was buried from St. Ann's Church, Hancock on Tuesday afternoon. She leaves no children, only grandchildren. 1888 Aug 2 Thursday-- Mrs. Madeline NEGANAKAENOQUI, mother of Mrs. Frances JACKER, died Monday Morning at her home on Portage Lake. She was about 95 years old. The remains were buried at the Catholic Mission near Baraga. They are living in Hancock. 1888 Aug 9 Thursday-- Last Saturday at Atlantic Mine, Mr. John H. JOLLY wed Miss Elizabeth POLGLASE, both of Atlantic Mine. 1888 Aug 9 Thursday-- At St. Ignatius church, Houghton, Mr. John EVERT wed Miss Mary KRATT, both of Houghton. DEATHS 1888 Aug 16 Thursday-- Mrs. Elizabeth CORN WOLF, of Hurontown, aged about 70 years old, was buried from St. Ignatius church, Houghton, Burial was at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton yesterday afternoon. She leaves several grown children. 1888 Aug 16 Thursday-- Mrs. Henry SCHWANEKEMP, died at her home in Houghton, last Saturday evening, Aug 11. She was 77 years old and was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. She leaves a husband and two children, Mrs. Joseph STAHL and Mrs. M. J. GEMMEND. Messrs Herman and Barney SCHWANEKEMP are her stepsons. 1888 Aug 15 Thursday-- The remains of Miss Maud SMITH, who died in Boston, arrived at Portage Lake last Thursday evening, accompanied by her mother. Burial was last Friday at Hancock Protestant cemetery. MARRIAGE 1888 Aug 16 Thursday--At the Houghton home of the brides brother in law on Aug 9, 1886, Mr. Alfred L. NOBLE wed Miss LOUISE E. LORD. The best man was the groom's brother, Alfred LORD and the bridesmaid was Miss Mabel EDWARDS of Lake Linden, her niece. DEATHS 1888 Aug 23 Thursday--The remains of John McPHEE, a machinist at the Peninsula mine, were buried in Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton, from St. Ignatius church, Houghton. 1888 Aug 30 Thursday--Mr. Wm MITCHELL died Monday night at his Houghton home, aged 72 years. The remains will be buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton with services at St. Ignatius church. He worked at the Franklin Stamp Mill a long time. He leaves a wife and 5 children-- Mr. Fred MITCHELL and Mr. Richard MITCHELL of Chicago. MARRIAGES 1888 Sept 6 Thursday--Mr. GEORGE KITTO wed Katie HODGE at the Hancock Methodist church parsonage, last night. Mr. John KITTO was best man and Miss Annie TAYLOR was bridesmaid. 1888 Sept 6 Thursday--At the Hancock Methodist parsonage on Tuesday evening, Mr. Richard J. GUNDRY owner of the Hancock laundry wed Miss Emma PENNELL. Mr. George DAVEY, of Franklin mine, was best man and the bridesmaid was Miss Ida NICHOLLS. DEATH 1888 Sept 13 Thursday--Mr. Augustin MONETTE, an aged and well know citizen of Houghton, died at noon last Saturday at his home. He was 75 years old. The funeral was held at St. Ignatius Church, Houghton and 65 carriages followed the casket to Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton for the burial. He leaves a wife, Lucy and 10 children, the sons are-- Frank. Augustin and Fred; the daughters are-- Lucy, Mary, Exilda, Fannie, Sophia, Odila and Ella. All the daughters are married and their married names in the order above are: Mesdames Eustacie PAGE; John GAGNON; Nelson RICKARD; Henry BOURBONAIS; Peter SUPPERNANT and Charles RAELLE, Jr. MARRIAGE 1888 Sept 13 Thursday--A bridal couple from Lake Linden left on Tuesday's train for Marquette, Mr. Aristide PARENT wed Miss Amelia PERREAULT. They were wed in Lake Linden by Father Mesnard. DEATH 1888 Sept 13 Thursday--Mr. Wm H. BUTTERFIELD died last Saturday, Sept 6, at his Houghton home from heart disease at age 64 years. He was born in Wayne County, New York and came to Houghton in 1857. He was connected the transportation and mercantile firms in Portage Lake for a number of years. He leaves a wife and 3 children-- Miss Cora and Messrs James and George BUTTERFIELD. NEWS ITEM 1888 Sept 20 Thursday--Captain Richard TREVELLICK, spoke to a large audience in Germans Hall, Hancock, Friday morning. He gave a talk on how conditions can be improved for labor by government help. He spoke from 20 years of studying the problem. He was born in REDRUTH, CORNWALL, ENGLAND, and came to America when he was young. At one time he was foreman of the second largest shipyard in America and for many years he was a sea Captain. He is 59 years old. The reporter on his talk objected to his coarse language and his praising the Democratic Party in an area where the Republican Party is in the majority. MARRIAGES 1888 Sept 20 Thursday--There were two marriages in St. Ignatius Church, Houghton at 8:OO AM Monday morning-- Mr. Hugo KRELLWITZ wed Miss Julia Allie. Their attending couple was Samuel YORK and Miss Julia ALLIE - The other marriage was, Mr. David ALLIE, brother to the bride listed above, wed Miss Mary FAUSHIE. Their attendants were Mr. Henry DA FORGE and Miss Jennie FAUSHIE. 1888 Sept 20 Thursday-- Mr. Michael C. DRISCOLL wed Miss Johanna DWYER, both of Hancock, at St. Ann's church on Tuesday morning, Sept 18. DEATHS 1888 Sept 20 Thursday-- Mrs. Wm OPITZ died at home in Hancock last Saturday and was buried in the Hancock Protestant cemetery on Thursday from the German Lutheran church. She was 60 years old. She was born in Germany and had lived in Hancock 25 years. She leaves a husband and 4 grown children-- Mrs. Charles LINDER; Mr. John OPITZ, an unmarried daughter and a son in the West. 1888 Sept 27 Thursday--Mrs. Mary WILLS, wife of Wm WILLS of Hurontown, near East Houghton, while in the Hancock Catholic Cemetery, last Friday afternoon attending the burial of a child of a friend, fell dead from apoplexy. While leaving the ceremony she fell dead on the grave of her father, whose name was SHERMACK and died some years ago. She was 50 years old and leaves a husband and 6 grown children. She was buried at Forest Hill cemetery, Houghton. MARRIAGE 1888 Sept 27 Thursday-- Mr. Nicholas SCHULER, an engineer on the Mineral range passenger train, wed Miss Kate GRIB, last Thursday. The ceremony was at Hancock German Lutheran church. DEATH 1888 Oct 11 Thursday-- Wm HODGE, aged 39 years old, was buried at Forest Hill cemetery yesterday. He was brother in law, Captain TAYLOR, of the Huron mine, where he died of asthma. MARRIAGE 1888 Oct 11 Thursday-- At Houghton, yesterday morning, Mr. A. HAHN wed Miss Anna Isabella BEAUBIEN. 1888 Oct 11 Thursday, At the Hancock home of the bride, Mr. A. L. WORTLEY, popular photographer wed Mrs. W. H. SOLIS. The groom's father, Rev Mr. WORTLEY performed the service. They will live in Hancock. 1888 Oct 25 Thursday-- At the Houghton home of the bride, on Wednesday morning, Mr. George GIBBS wed Miss Maria 0. LAMBERT, both of Houghton. 1888 Oct 25 Thursday-- At the Houghton home of the brides parents, on last Thursday evening, Mr. Frank MAJOR wed Miss Emma HARRIS. The attendants were Messrs. Edward and Harry MAJOR and Misses Lucy MAJOR and Josephine HARRIS. 1888 Oct 25 Thursday-- At the boarding place of the bride in Hancock on Tuesday morning, Mr. Cornelius BEDELL of Quincy mill wed Miss *Millie/Mollie DICKENS, a clerk in the sheriffs department. COGGIN , aged 33 years, for 15 years a faithful helper and friend. The funeral took place from the home of Mr. COGGIN, Wednesday afternoon. MARRIAGES 1888 Nov 1 Thursday-- Mr. John CORNISH of Leadville, Colorado wed Miss Amelia RICHARDS of the Franklin mine, Saturday evening at the Pewabic Methodist church. Messrs George DAVEY and John RICHARDS, brother of the bride, were groomsmen and Misses Amelia UREN and Kate RICHARDS, sister of the bride were bridesmaids. They will live in Leadville, Colorado. 1888 Nov 8 Thursday--Mr. John KROLL wed Miss Emma BENTLEY at 7AM this morning, by Rev. C.C. PELLEN. Both are of Houghton. DEATH 1888 Nov 8 Thursday-- Mrs. Delila PATTENATE of Atlantic Mine, was found dead in bed by her husband on Sunday night. She died of heart disease. She leaves a husband. MARRIAGE 1888 Nov 8 Thursday--At St. Joseph's Church, Hancock, this morning, Mr. John THERRION wed Miss Ida SCHULTE of Hancock. DEATH 1888 Nov 8 Thursday-The funeral of Jeremiah CROWLEY last Sunday morning from St. Ann's Church t o the Hancock Catholic cemetery. He was 53 years old. He leaves a wife and a large family of children most grown. DEATH 1888 Nov 8 Thursday-- Mrs. Mary BOSCH, wife of Joseph BOSCH, and daughter of Mr. and Joseph WERTIN of Hancock. died at her Lake Linden home last Saturday afternoon, Nov 3. She was buried in Lake Linden Catholic cemetery. She was 41 years old and leaves a husband a daughter aged 10 years, parents and three brothers- Bishop VERTIN of Marquette; Joseph WERTIN of Red Jacket and George WERTIN of Hancock. MARRIAGE 1888 Nov 15 Thursday-- At St. Ann's Church, Hancock, Tuesday morning, Mr. Henry ROHL wed Miss Margaret SULLIVAN of Franklin. DEATHS 1888 Nov 22 Thursday-- Wm ROGERS, who has been employed for a number of years on the surface of the Franklin Mine, died at his Hancock home last Saturday afternoon, aged 59 years old. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND and has lived in the copper district the last 40 years. The funeral was held at the Methodist church of Hancock and he was buried in the Hancock Protestant cemetery. 1888 Dec 6 Thursday-- Mrs. Elizabeth BEDELL, wife of George BEDELL, head machinist at the Quincy mine, died Tuesday night, at her East Hancock home. She was buried in the Hancock Protestant Cemetery. She was born in Yorkshire, England in 1826 and came with her husband to Hancock in 1861. She leaves her husband and 3 children--Mrs. Robert STEWART; Messrs Cornelius and James BEDELL. MARRIAGES 1888 Dec 6 Thursday--At the Hancock Methodist Parsonage. Last Thursday, Mr. Frank CARTER wed Miss Minnie WHITE, both of Hancock. 1888 Dec 6 Thursday--At the Hancock Methodist parsonage, last Thursday-- Mr. Joseph SODDY wed Miss Louisa McKINNEY, both of Calumet. 1888 Dec 6 Thursday-- At the East Hancock home of the brides father, last Thursday evening, Mr. John F. FUNKEY, son of superintendent John FUNKEY of the Franklin mill, wed Miss Minnie WAGNER, daughter of Fred WAGNER, head carpenter at the Quincy mill. NEWS ITEM 1888 Dec 13 Thursday- At Copper Falls mine, Keweenaw County, A miner, James BERRIMAN, was knocked senseless but he was not seriously injured, last Saturday. DEATH 1888 Dec 13 Thursday-- At Central mine, Keweenaw County, Mr. Wm MARTIN was killed by a fall of ground on last Thursday night. His brother was standing at a distance of 10 feet and was a witness to the accident. He was about 27 years old leaves a wife and 2 children to mourn his loss. The funeral was held on last Saturday. MARRIAGE 1888 Dec 20 Thursday-- In Houghton Methodist church last Night, Mr. Albert E. STOYLE wed Miss Georgia A. P. WALDRON, daughter of Mes E. WALDRON.
