HILLYER, formerly a resident of Houghton died of typhoid pneumonia. He leaves a wife and two children. DIED- 1882 January 3 Tuesday, John P. GROUT, died at his home in Detroit, Michigan. He was connected with t he copper industry in Lake Superior over 30 years. He came to this state when a young man. 1882 January 12- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED-1881 December 27 At Franklin, mine, Michigan- George Thomas GOVETT and Miss Mary Hannah NETTELL. MARRIED- 1881 December 23 at Franklin, mine Michigan - William Henry PERRY and Miss Bessie Jane SYMONS MARRIED - 1881 December 13 At Central City, Colorado, Mr D. KELLY and Miss Lizzie MARTIN 1882 January 18-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Yesterday afternoon two miners of the Quincy mine, John EARLES and Mike KELLY, drilled into some powder left in a hole and caused an explosion. John EARLES died suddenly. Mike KELLY was unhurt. 1882 January 26-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Thursday Isaac JIGGINSON, living near the Hecla mine, who is partially blind, while chopping stumps around his house, struck his son who was standing behind him with the axe. It made a gash in the boy's head. The boy was very ill last week and is much better now. 1882 February 2 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- At the Osceola mine last Friday, a miner, Graion? SIMONS, met with an accident while working underground. In picking down some loose ground, a rock fell on his leg breaking it. 1882 February 16 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Alex McDERMID who opened a saloon in Red Jacket, according to reports used his wife in an inhuman manner, causing her death. She was buried in Calumet cemetery, on Wednesday. He was driven from town by his neighbors and forced to flee after being beaten by the people. He no longer lives in the town and no one knows where he went. 1882 February 23 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN. NEWS ITEM- A miner from CORNWALL, ENGLAND named William GRIBBIN, employed in the Quinnesec Iron mine in Menominee, Michigan has lost the sight of both eyes, including bodily injury through tampering with a hole that failed to explode in the time allowed for its explosion. 1882 March 2 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIAGE- 1882 February 21 Thursday at Hancock, Mr. T. J. PRINCE and Miss Fannie L. SNELL, both of Hancock. 1882 March 9-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- A young lad, Peter KRUPP , while unloading a railroad car, he pulled a pin that was holding the stolls and they rolled on him crushing three toes, yesterday morning in Calumet. DIED -Yesterday morning, a miner, Frank HALL, who had been drinking hard, tried ending his life by cutting his throat lying in bed, in the public house of James WILLIAMS in Calumet. He was buried at the Hancock cemetery. 1882 March 23 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIAGE- Last Monday evening, at the Calumet residence of the bride's father, Mr. Ford EATON of the Calumet and Hecla mine office, formerly of Oberlin and Miss Grace, the 3rd daughter of Capt. Thomas HOATSON, superintendent of the Calumet and Hecla Mine company, 1882 March 30 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1882 March 23 Thursday evening, at the Quincy mine hospital, Frank son of Jerry MINNIHAN, of consumption. PROBATE MATTER- In the estate of Ivar OLSON, deceased , Christian OLSON requested that the court appoint him administrator of the estate. 1882 April 6 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1882 April 3 at the home of the bride's father, Thomas VIVIAN of Lake Linden, Mr. William WAREHAM, Jr. and Miss Mary Edith M. VIVIAN, both of Lake Linden. 1882 April 13 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- On Wednesday a miner, William KNIGHT, was working in Calumet number 2 shaft, when a piece of lumber came down hitting him on the head and side. If a companion had not caught him he would have plunged to his death. He had a broken arm from the incident. DIED- Yesterday Mary GARRETY was found dead in bed by her husband, John, a miner at the Quincy mine location. The couple had been married a year and lived in Hancock. It was found she had committed suicide with rat poison. 1882 April 20 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - Last Monday morning, a young man, Joseph LORERSCH, employed by the Haas Brewing Company, died very suddenly from an attack of apoplexy. 1882 May 4 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Mr. S. M. STREETER, the pioneer hotel man of Calumet, has given up the ownership of the Calumet Hotel and will move to Quinnesec, in the Menominee iron district. DEATH-Thursday morning, Nicholas THENO, a lander at the Grand Portage mine, near the Isle Royale mine, while reaching out to catch an ascending water bucket, and while to regain an upright position, was struck by the bucket and was knocked into the shaft, to his death. 1882 May 11-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Joseph LAKOSKI and Anna HEUSLA were brought before Justice POWERS for selling liquor without a license. The cases were held under advisement contingent on their stopping selling liquor.. NEWS ITEM- Miss Maggie HALL, dressmaker of Hancock, needs girls is in want of sewing girls. ? MARRIED- 1882 May 4 at the Lake Linden Methodist parsonage, William John RICHARDS of Lake Linden and Miss Eliza KING of Central Mine, Keweenaw County. DIED- Last Thursday James KANE, foreman of the Keel Ridge Iron Mine, in the Menominee district, was killed by a block of ore falling on him. 1882 May 18-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1882 May 16, Thursday, at the residence of bride's mother in Hancock; Mr. H. E. LEACH of Lake Linden and Miss Flora F. CROFT. DIED- A week ago today, Mr. Edward SALES, aged 58 years, one on Ontonagon County's oldest and most respected citizens died, at the residence of Mr. F. L. LASIE R of Detroit Michigan. For over 30 years he took a leading part in the affairs of the Ontonagon district. He leaves no family as his wife died two years ago. His body was shipped to Ontonagon for burial. 1882 May 25 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Antoine PROBST, while on the man-engine, last Wednesday, at the 2nd level in the Hecla mine, was crowded against the wall to receive against the wall and received a severe dislocation of the left knee. He will be in the hospital for some time. NEWS ITEM- William DAVY, aged 11 years, working with one of the drills on the 20th level, at the Calumet shaft no 2, Wednesday afternoon, in turning around caught his hand in the machinery and crushed it. 1882 June 1 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Wednesday last, Mrs. Christina STRUM, abandoned wife of an ex Marshall of Red Jacket, was issued a warrant to stop her selling liquor without a license. She was sentenced to 10 days in jail and a $50.00 fine. 1882 June 8-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1882 June 1, At the Atlantic mine residence of Capt W. W. STEPHENS; Mr. James A. PIPER of Osceola and Miss Elizabeth J. DUNN of Atlantic mine. 1882 June 15 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- Last Wednesday evening, At East Houghton, Mr. John D. SIMPSON of Norway, Michigan and Miss Bertha M. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. SILLER. 1882 June 22- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER- In the estate of Hannah L. CHADBOURNE, deceased, T. L. CHADBOURNE, asked to be appointed administrator. 1882 June 29 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Tuesday evening, the body of Theodore KLEINSOGER was found in Portage Lake opposite the Union Brewery. He had been missing since June 18 when he and August KRAMER were on a drunken spree and they had tried to cross the lake in a small boat. The jury could not decide how he died. DIED- Last Thursday Michael COTTER was charging a hole in the 6th level of the Huron mine; the cartridge did not go down in the hole. He got a hammer and in striking it, the blast went off killing him. Egyptian Press of Marion, Illinois May 25, 1882 Crimes and Casualties At Houghton, Mich., on the 16th, Anton BIEBER, shot his wife and then committed suicide.
