These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. ____________________________________________________________________ 1881 July - December Issues - Some issues may be missing. ........denotes there was more to the article and the article with in is a shortened version. 1881 July 7-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Sunday night, Peter STUBERT and Frank KLESTERMANN, employees of Haas Brewery in Hancock, were crossing the bridge on the way from Hancock, when the hat of KLESTERMANN blew off into Portage Lake. They got a rowboat at Mr WALLACE's house, and tried to find the hat. Their boat capsized and George WALLACE and Thomas DODGE, who were on the yacht "Clara" heard cries of help. They found Mr KLESTERMANN unharmed and saved him but Peter STUBERT sank to the bottom of lake to his death. The body was recovered on Sunday the week after the death. He was about 25 years old and single. His parents reside in Minnesota. DIED- On Thursday afternoon, Mr Charles RICHARDS, who kept a small shop in Red Jacket, was returning from Torch Lake. He was in a hurry to catch a departing train and jumped off the car of his train and stumbled as his foot hit the ground and the cars knocked him down and he refused to go to the hospital and was taken to his home to die. 1881 July 21- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Friday, a young Finnish man, Jacob TOMSON, died at the Osceola mine while doing what appeared to be a heroic act. He saved his brother from being killed by an explosion and lost his life. The brother was badly cut by the explosion. 1881 July 28-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last week John POPE, in a Keweenaw county mine, had a narrow escape from a dreadful injury. His clothing was caught in the shafting, which was making 150 revolutions a minute and was whirled about in a lively manner for a few moments. The power was shut off stopping the machine. His injuries were not serious. 1881 August 4-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS AD - STRAY-PICKED UP- Come on the premises of the undersigned, at Clifton, Keweenaw County, a young cow, pale in color, with buff on the neck. The owner may have same by proving property and paying charges for same. 1881 July 25 Signed by; John M. RICHARDS MARRIED- 1881 July 30 At St Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton; Mr M. RYAN and Miss Gustavus HEIMES, both of Hurontown. 1881 August 11 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1881 July 17 Mr. John CANN, the late clerk of the Calumet and Hecla mining company, died at Brocksville, Canada West. He left all his property to his father. Since his death his parents were thrown from their buggy and seriously hurt. DIED- On Tuesday 1881 August 9, At the Methodist parsonage of Lake Linden, Kate Grace, infant daughter of Rev Isaac and Mrs Grace W. WILCOX, aged 9 months. 1881 August 25-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN The 3 retiring trustees of Red Jacket are Messrs D.D. MURPHY; WERTHEN and NAPPA. It is not known if there will be opposition to their election. 1881 September 8 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Tuesday evening an accident occurred in the Calumet mine. Some men were standing on a stage over the pump fixing the pipes for the new pump. The stage weighing 1500 pounds gave way and the men fell into the sump. The elbow of John GOVETTI was totally smashed and his arm had to be amputated. Mat MARTIN, a trumpet player in the Calumet band was badly hurt; Robert TREDRAY had his collar-none broken. l88l September 22 - PORTAGE LAKE MININMG GAZETTE, HOUGHTON,MICHIGAN DIED- Mr Frank PLUGGLE, one of the oldest citizens, received word from Arizona, informing him of the death of his son, Mike, who went West 7 years ago. He started from the Papago mountains in the Silver Bell district to Castle Grande, having in his charge a horse and a mule. The District Attorney received a letter stating a body was found about a mile and a half from Pelton, Arizona on August 28. There was no evidence of foul play. The body was buried where it was found. NEWS ITEM- Mr B. Y. McKEY S, former clerk of the Atlantic mine is now a new resident in Eureka, New Mexico. 1881 October 6 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON,MICHIGAN MARRIAGE- 1881 September29 Thursday, at the home of the bride's parents at Neenah, Wisconsin, Mr Albert H. GRAY of Houghton and Miss Jessie F. PAGE. 1881 October 13 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN ITEM- 1881 September 16 A house in Swedetown, back east of Houghton, was burned while the owner, Kate KELJETT was absent in Calumet. Upon her return she felt it was the work of an incendiary, and swore out warrants for Louis CHTISTIAN and Patrick SULLIVAN. The warrant was given to Marshall MacDONALD and he went to the house in East Houghton of CHRISTIAN and found articles belonging to Miss KELJETT. They will both have to go to court in the matter. 1881 October 27 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1881 October 23 Sunday- Mary Ellen, daughter of Superintendent Johnson and Elizabeth VIVIAN, of the Franklin and Pewabic mines, aged 18 y ears. She was at her church for choir practice, she was standing up and fell down into a chair and died of heart disease. DIED- 1881 October 22 At Allouez, Keweenaw county, died of infantile contractions, Evelyn Mary, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. SALIS. Aged 6 months. 1881 November 19 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED-Last Monday night an explosion occurred in the Quincy mine in which two men born in Finland, Mr JARVELA and Mr HAUVARA, died as a result. A boy named MEYER was also instantly killed. 1881 November 17 PORTAGE LAKE MIN ING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Allen F. REES, who was principal of the Atlantic mine school has accepted another year's appointment. 1881 November 21 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 November 23- At St Ignatius Catholic church, Houghton- Mr Dennis REAGAN and Miss Katie POWERS, both of Houghton. 1881 December 1- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 November 24 Thursday, at the residence of James H. BLANDY, of Houghton- Mr George W. QUIRK and Miss Ida E. OLDS, both of Houghton 1881 December 15 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN CIRCUIT COURT CASE- The people versus Minnie LARCHER. Obtaining money under false pretense. NOT GUILTY. 1881 December 22 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Last Saturday night Miss Minnie BRAUNSTROF of Hurontown, retired to rest in apparent good health. The following morning her mother went to awaken her and found him dead of heart disease. DIED -1881 December 14- on Wednesday, a 13-year-old son of Louis TOWIN was drowned while skating on the ice of Torch lake.
