MOLLARD, an aged man, died Saturday evening last of Brights disease at the Commercial House Hotel , Calumet. He worked for many years for the Calumet and Hecla Mining compamy. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. He amassed quite a lot of money and provided for his two sisters in CORNWALL. He was buried in Calumet with Masonic rituals. 1881 January 16 -PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRlED - - No date given, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Phoenix Mine, Keweenaw County, Mr William FUZZY and Miss Sarah Ann SKILLCORN, both of Phoenix mine. DIED - One of our old residents , Isaac WINTURI, died very suddenly last week and the funeral was from the Calumet Trinity Scandanavian church was buried on Sunday at the Calumet cemetery. He was much respected by his Finnish countrymen. 1881 January 23 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - On Monday last, Capt William B. FRUE , about 57 years old, well known in the copper country in the past, died at his home in Detroit, Michigan of congestion of the lungs. He arrived on Portage Lake in 1853 and soon was working for the Pewabic mine, where he finally was promoted to Mining Captain. He was instrumental in the formation of the South Pewabic Mining company, now the Atlantic mine, and was the superintendent of the mine until it suspended operations. He leaves a wife and several children, besides a large and valuable estate. 1881 FEBRUARY 3 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1881 January 21, In Houghton - Richard B. LANG and Anna M. SHERMAN, on Tuesday evening. DIED- The old persons of the Lake Superior area will hear with regret the death of Mr Nicholas VIVIAN, mechanical and mining engineer, the other day at the home of his son, Dr Godfrey VIVIAN, of Alexandria, Minnesota. The late Mr VIVIAN was connected with the mining interests of this section as far back as 1840. He acted as engineer in the erection of mine machinery in Ontonagon and Keweenaw Point districts. 1881 February 10 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1881 February 7 At Houghton, Mr William SIBILSKY and Miss Catherine SWARTZ, both of Calumet. NEWS ITEM- On Monday morning last, a Polish man, Mat MIKLOWSKI, who works in the Hecla mine rock house, had an accident. The rope attached to the skip broke and the rock fell from the skip on Mr MILKOWSKI and he was injured and taken to the company hospital. He will recover. DIED- Yesterday afternoon, the body of Philip MOLIN BACH, a wood contractor, was found behind his team which was standing on a wood road behind Hecla Swedetown. He was known to have fits and it is thought he had one and fell out of his carriage in the snow. He leaves a widow and two children. NEWS ITEM- John LANGDON, of the Ivanhoe, has taken charge at the Schoolcraft and Centennial mine. It is proposed to pump the water of the one shaft and sink three new shafts this summer. DIED- Mr Samuel LEE of Hancock, died very suddenly last Sunday noon. He seemed all right during the day and while his wife was fixing dinner he laid down and became unconcious and died. He leaves a wife and two children in poor circumstances. 1881 February 17-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- On Saturday morning last, Mr A. J. COREY, late superintendent of the Quincy mine, died at his residence. He died of a complication of diseases. He was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island some 35 years ago and came to this district at 18 years old. Except for a short time at an Ontoganon mine he spent all of his working life at the Quincy mine. In 1872 he was promoted from clerk at the Ouincy to superintendent. He leaves wife, a daughter of the late Daniel PITTMAN of Ontonagon and four children. The funeral services were held on Monday last at Trinity Episcopal church, Houghton. The remains were forwarded to Stoughton, Massachussetts for burial near those of his father, Mr D. S. KENDALL. MARRIED- 1881 February 8 at L'Anse, Baraga Co. Sophia BENJAMIN of Baraga, Baraga County. 1881 February 24-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- Mr Michael McGANN who lived in Houghton for many years and 5 years ago he was sent to the Kalamazoo Insane Asylum, and was returned after it was thought he was cured. Not being able to get work here, he moved with his family to Ontonagon county. While his family went to a funeral there, when they came back he had hung himself. Died- Mr Mike Ryan worked for many years as a timberman at the Hecla and Osceola mines, but for the last two years had been farming at Caledonia, Michigan and lately died there. DIED -Mr Henry BUZZO the great mining leader of Ontonagon County, lately died there. In his latter days he was employed under Mr Johnson VIVIAN at the Schoolcraft and Franklin mines in Houghton County and returned to Ontonagon. 1881 March 3 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 February 21 At Houghton, Mr Thomas HALL and Miss Lizzie WILCOX, daughter of Capt Thomas WELCOX of the Concord mine. DIED- Billy WILLIAMS, died this past week. He was born In CORNWALL, ENGLAND and worked on the roads in the summer and did chores in the winter. He lived in one of PEARCE's houses in Red Jacket. He had a horror of being buried as a pauper and asked a friend to see to it. After he died $50.00 was found in his things and it covered the costs. 1881 March 10-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Captain William NEWCOMBE, for a number of years an efficient under officer at the Franklin mine, thinking his health impaired, has resigned his position and gone out to Minnesota to engage in farming and try and restore his health. 1881 March 17- PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Many of our population have lately left here and gone to the Menominee, Michigan region, where several of them have gotten positions as bosses, timbermen, etc. Josiah HARRIS lately a timberman at the Hecla mine,is now engaged as Captain of the mine here. NEWS ITEM- Mrs Mary NESTOR of Houghton was 97 years old yesterday, 1881 March 24-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Mr George H. COX, who on account of ill health was given by the Calumet and Hecla Mining company a one year leave of absence, has found relief from a sea voyage to the Azore Islands. But being afraid to risk another winter in this cold climate, he has resigned his position at the Michigan Carbon Works at Detroit, Michigan, for which company Mr Charles E. LYON, formerly of Calumet, is the assistant manager. NEWS ITEM- Last Friday, Mr D.T. MacDONALD received word of the death of his son, Dr. John M. MacDONALD. The son once practiced medicine in Calumet and was at the time of his death working in a Norwegian village in Iowa. He was a young man. One other son died in the New Orleabs yellow fever plague prior to this. l88l April 7-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Miss Addie BENNETT of the Phoenix mine area, Keweenaw County, has left for the East where she will live permanently. DIED- 1881 April 5, on Tuesday morning ,At the residence of her son -in-law, Mr Charles E. HOLLAND of Hancock, Mrs Margaret CARDELL, widow of Dr CARDELL of Detroit, Michigan, aged 66 years. She leaves a son, Mr M. L. CARDELL; her daughters- Mrs C. F. HOLLAND; Mrs E. H. TOWAR; Mrs Wm CARR of Hancock and Mrs W. D. WILLIAMS of Marquette, Marquette County. The funeral will be from the residence today, Thursday. NEWS ITEM- Mr George JACKA met with a severe accident in the woods one day last week. In riding around his cutter upset, throwing him against a tree causing internal injuries. 1881 April 14-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Mr Carlo BRANO has purchased the saloon and the house next door in Red Jacket from Louis CORIAGLIOTTI 1881 April 28-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Messrs KALHOUSE and WARD of Red Jacket have bought out Mr Vivian CHELLEW, owner of the meat market at the Osceola mine and Mr CHELLEW will move to the Menominee Range. NEWS ITEM- On Monday last a Polish miner, Vias YOTTSAC, while at work in the Hecla mine got his left leg half way below the knee broken. He is a trammer and was dumping a car into the skip. He had two pieces of rock to load in the skip and one fell out and hit his leg. He is in the mine hospital. 1881 May 5 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1881 May 3, Tuesday-At the Atlantic mine, Ann, wife of Capt William TONKIN, aged 60 years. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Houghton. She was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND. DIED- Last night a destructive fire occurred in the part of the location of Franklin mine called Coburn town. A son of John SHEA, aged 11 years, died in the flames. The houses destroyed were owned by Quin Ian SHEA; Michael D. KELLY; John STINEY and Joseph PEDELTY. 1881 May 12-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED-Captain Charles S. ANDERSON, aged 23 years, of the steamer Riverside, was struck on the head by a tender of the steamer, at dry dock, spring wells, and died twelve hours later. 1881 May 26-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- At the Atlantic mine on last Wednesday, an accident happened to two miners, Isaac HARVEY and John CHAPPEL, who were seriously injured, the former about the head and eyes and the latter by a broken leg. They were involved in a blast that they thought went off earlier. 1881 June 2 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- On Thursday evening last, Thomas FULLER, the station agent at the Mineral Range railroad depot and Annie the eldest daughter of Mr John A. DANIELSON, at the Calumet Congregational church. NEWS ITEM- George D. BOLTON, who has been mining engineer for the Calumet and Hecla for a number of years, resigned his position to go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he will go into business. 1881 June 91 HE PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - Mr J. N. SCOTT of t he Phoenix mine, Keweenaw Gouty, he was born in the North of England. He has been in business in the Upper Peninsula for many years. He was at the time of his death in partnership with his father-in-law, J. D. BROCKWAY. 1881 June 16 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 June 11 on Saturday- In Houghton, Mr William HOSKINGS of Calumet and Miss Susanna FLEISCHMANN of Houghton. MARRIED- 1881 June 11, Saturday, At Houghton, Mr Edwin HEIMBACK and Miss Rosa FLEISCHMANN of Houghton. NEWS ITEM- Mr John L REES, son of the late Seth REES of Houghton, graduated at the Annapolis Naval Academy, Maryland, the other day with high honors. He was 4th in his large class and being designated as a "star man". DIED- Last Monday Nick PETERS of Hurontown, while riding down Quincy hill on a load of shingles, slipped from his seat and fell under the wagon causing internal injuries from which he died soon after. 1881 June 23-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 June 16 At Houghton Trinity Episcopal church, Thursday evening; Mr Noe BELANGER of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Miss Annie B. BIGLEY, of Eastwood, Ontario, Canada. DIED- Mr James B. REID, an old resident of this district, died in Fewsville, Michigan on 1881 June 16, Friday. He had been connected with the copper country for a great many years. He opened out a belt of copper in the St Louis mine several years ago and he also had charge of the Schoolcraft mine in its infancy. He was buried at Forest Hill cemetery last Saturday. DIED- Card of Thanks in paper-The undersigned would return their heartfelt thanks who did so much to soften the grief caused by the death of our brother, Bernard HOFEN. Signed by John HOFEN; Henry HOFEN; Mrs Frank HAHN and Mrs Christ GUTMAN. 1881 June 30 -PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1881 June 22 at Lake Linden Methodist church parsonage- Mr John MUNRO and Miss Mary Ann ROWAN, both of Lake Linden, Michigan. DIED- 1881 June 22 Oliver A. FARWELL, aged 70 years and 26 days, died of stomach cancer at the Cliff mine, Keweenaw County. For the past 9 years he was the agent for the Cliff mine. He was identified with the mining interests of Lake Superior for a long time. He had traveled over much of the world including, Europe, Asia and South America. He leaves a wife and children. MARRIED-At Hancock, St Ann's church, last Tuesday, Mr James GANI of Edward RYAN's Red Jacket store and Maggie, 2nd daughter of Captain John C. RYAN. File contributed for use in Houghton Co.
