WILLIAMS ; Henry BENNETTS; H. P. LARSON; William CRAZE; P. S. SIMON and Steven TRESTRAIL NEWS ITEM - William RETALLICK and J. RETALLICK, Jr of Keweenaw County have just returned from a trip thru the Dakotas and Minnesota. NEWS ITEM - Joseph WHITE on Sunday morning last at Central mine, Keweenaw county, committed suicide by cutting his throat. He had tried several times prior but finnally did it. He was an elderly man. 1879 July 10 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - A man names, J. LAPINE of Hought on, who was one of the passengers on the ship MANISTEE, fell overboard on the return trip from Ontonagon, Ontonagon county and was drowned. 1879 July 17 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - Last Monday an old employee of the Pewabic mine, Timothy DOWNEY, fell backwards into the shaft in an accident. He leaves a large family, one of his sons works at the Pewabic mine. NEWS ITEM - Capt. Samuel McDONALD offers for sale his very desireable residence in West Hancock. He is leaving this section and will sell at a reasonable price. NEWS ITEM - Thomas DUNSTAN, the Keweenaw county prosecuting attorney, is about to leave the county and establish himself in Southern Michigan. DIED - A Frenchman named John MORLETT had a fatal attack of parlysis on Monday last. The deceased left a wife , from whom he was separated in Marquette, Marquette County and son. NEWS ITEM - On Monday night at the Allouez mine, Keweenaw county, John HODGES born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, broke the rules and jumped off the skip and broke his thigh. PROBATE MATTER - IN the estate of Isaac MATTERS, deceased, his wife, Elizabeth MATTERS asked to be appointed executrix. 1879 July 24 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - Frank H. COE, was elected principal of the Phoenix schools, in Keweenaw County. NEWS ITEM - William S. THOMAS, formerly clerk of Keweenaw County, has begun his law practice in Detroit, Michigan. DIED - At Suisun City, California 1879 May 12, Exeas WALDRON, formerly of Houghton, Michigan, whose parents reside in Houghton, died of a malignant fever. He was formerly associated with his brother, J. C. WALDRON in the publication of a newspaper in L’Anse, Baraga County, that failed. His brother had him buried in the Methodist church in Suisun City on 1879 July 12. 1879 July 31 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN GONE AWAY - Whereas my wife, Brita Christine ADAMSON, has left my bed and board without any just cause, I herby give notice I will not be responsible for any debts contributed by her after t his date. 1879 July 25 Osceola, Calumet township-- signed Adam ADAMSON MORGTAGE DEFAULT- By decree of the Circuit Court in Houghton County, default having been made in the mortgage hearing 1867 July 13, Joseph SEIBERT and Katherine SEIBERT, his wife, of the village of Houghton, are in default to the mortgagee, August DALLMEYER. 1879 August 14 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - Mr David ROBERTS, a timberman in the Calumet mine, had a bad fall , one day last week. He was fixing a wall plate and it slipped from his hand and he fell 16 feet injuring in face and hands. NEWS ITEM - A young man names Albert ROBBINS while hauling some timber from a railroad car of the Hecla and Torch Railroad met with an accident on Monday last. . While unloading the lumber it slipped inflicting some internal injuries, it is expected that he will recover. DEATH - On Saturday night last, Squire PARK, age in his 90s , for many years a resident of Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County, died. For many years and up to his death he was a British subject. At the time of his death, he was staying with his daughter, Mrs D. M. BREG of Eagle Harbor. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Eagle Harbor and the burial was at Eagle Harbor cemetery. MARRIED - 1879 August 7 Thursday - At the residence of the bride’s father, Mr Harry S. HODGE and Miss Carrie H. WRIGHT, daughter of Mr Z. W. WRIGHT of Houghton. 1879 August 21 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - Last week Mr Joseph ROCK, while supervising some men working for the Calumet and Hecla Mining company, while laying some track from the mine rock house, was hurt by a piece of timber falling on him, hurting his head severely. NEWS ITEM - Mr William BATH , recently principal of the Lake Linden schools, has been to the same position in the Eagle River, Keweenaw County schools. DIED - Last evening, a miner named John WIVELL, employed in the Quincy mine, in attempting to descend the mine ladders, with 4 dinner pails in his arms, fell over 100 feet to his death. NEWS ITEM - Yesterday morning Mr Ed BASH, the fish peddler, while rounding a corner in a Houghton street, was thrown from his carriage and narrowly escaped breaking his neck. 1879 August 28 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - On Tuesday last, George W. and Gersham FEW of Fewsville, were before United States Commissioner from Hancock, were charged by Indian Agent LEE for selling liquor to Indians. The accused were put under $500 bonds for future appearance. NEWS ITEM - Sheriff NORTHY left for lower Michigan, this morning on the steamer, IVANHOE, escorting William H. BEAGLEHOLE of Calumet; John MULHONEY of Torch Lake and Peter PETERSON to the Insane Asylum at Kalamazoo, Michigan. 1879 September 4 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 September 2, Wednesday, at the home of the bride’s parents at Adrian, Michigan - Mr Frank A. DOUGLASS of Houghton and Miss Mary M. CORRIN. MARRIED - 1879 August 30, at the Clifton Methodist parsonage, Mr William H. LUTEY and Miss Mary Ellen SKILLICORN, both of the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County. NEWS ITEM - An employee of the Calumet and Hecla Mining company named Pat HARVEY, got kicked by a horse while cleaning the stable and broke his wrist. NEWS ITEM - The friends of Edward SANTENEAUX of Houghton are getting ready to celebrate his 100th birthday. on Friday, October 31. 1879 September 11 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 September 8 at Hancock, Mr James VIVIAN and Miss Mary PHILLIPS, both of Red Jacket. 1879 September 18-PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - The village father of Red Jacket dismissed the night watchman, Joseph WILMEES because he did not turn in a fire alarm the last time a fire occurred in Red Jacket at night. Mr John STROM was appointed temporarily. MARRIED - On Thursday evening last, Paul ROEHM, son of Christopher ROEHM and Miss Anna McDONALD, at the home of the bride’s father, Duncan McDONALD of Houghton. The couple made a flying visit to their friend in Ontonagon county, where both were born. NEWS ITEM - William John TONKIN, the newly elected marshall of the village of Red Jacket is going around collecting taxes. 1879 September 25 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 September 11, At the home of the bride’s father at London, Canada - Mr Wm C. TONKIN of Houghton, Michigan and Miss Ida May, only daughter of Mr T. T. HAYDEN of London, Canada. MARRIED - 1879 September 15 At St Vincent’s church, Detroit - Mr C. J. McGRATH of Hancock and Miss Kate QUINN of Houghton, Michigan. DIED - On Monday, old Mr McFARLANE , who has been for many years in the employ of the Calumet and Hecla mining company , at Toirch lake, was taken sick and brought to the Calumet hospital., where he died. He was buried in the Calumet hospital on Tuesday. 1879 October 2 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - A letter dated September 20, 1879 from Mr W. G. ROWE of Lake City Colorado, relating the death on Saturday last of a former resident of Central Mine, Keweenaw County, Mr Francis COX. He came to Kansas with a view to buying a farm and than went to Colorado to a mining camp where Capt James CRUSE was the manager. Not liking that area he returned to Lake Superior area. He than went to Lead City with his son to work in the mine. He was cleaning his gun and he accidentally shot himself in the arm and he died from the poisioning . Capt James and William CRUSE gave his son all the assistance they could. He was buried at Lake City on Sunday September 21. 1879 October 9 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER- In the estate of Columbus C. DOUGLASS, deceased, Anna SMITH, presented his last will to the court. DIED - Wm BECKERLEG, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, was found dead September 14 in the Sutro tunnell of the Savage mine after being there 4 weeks dead. This was in one of the Western states . His wife is still alive. He had worked previously in Calumet for many years. 1879 October 16 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 October 11 at the residence of the bride’s parents - Mr James N. COX and Edith Isabelle, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred MacKENZIE of Calumet. The newly married couple will live in the house formerly occupied by George H. COX, brother of the groom. NEWS ITEM - On Monday morning last, Harry HOSKING employed around the stone tables at the Franklin mine pressing works, had his sleeve caught in a machine dislocating three ribs, damaging his knee and other minor injuries. NEWS ITEM - A woodsman claims that there is a forest of timber within 5 miles of Portage Lake that contains any number of trees capable of affoding? masts 120 feet high. 1879 October 23 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- On Monday afternoon, George LEBLCIN, who had worked in Hancock as a shoemaker, was riding on the train to Torch Lake to obtain employment, was on his way home via the Hecla and Torch Lake railroad. He was standing on the bumpers between cars with his hands in his pockets, when by accident his feet slipped and he fell off the train and his arm fell on the track and the train ran over it. He was taken to a hospital and the arm was amputated. 1879 October 30 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - On Friday last, John PILGER while assisting the timberman in the Hecla mine had his leg broken by a piece of rock falling on him. 1879 November 13 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DEATH - On Tuesday evening last, Joseph THOMAS, who worked at the Alouez Stamp mill, Keweenaw county, who was riding to the mine on the cars with other men, when he fell off and went under the train which rode over him and killed him. Some time ago two of his brothers were blasted and one died and went blind. 1879 November 20 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - Mr John B. ELLENBACHER, who for so many years has been superintendent of the Calumet and Hecla Staamp mills, has retired from the company’s employ on Saturday last. He was replaced by Mr Fred COGGIN, formerly of Burlington, Vermont and of the United States Navy. DIED - On Friday last a miner, Joel JENKINS was killed in the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw County, by a piece of rock falling on him . He leaves a widow and one child. The funeral took place at the Eagle River burial ground. 1879 December 4 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN B BIRTH - 1879 November 24 At The Clark mine, Keweenaw County, a daughter to the wife of Leon LAUVAUX. MARRIED -1879 November 19 In Houghton, Mr Ernest S. WRIGHT of Chicago, Illinois and Miss Lottie NANCARROW of Houghton. PROBATE ORDER - in the estate of Thomas H. DOCKING, deceased, Sarah Jane DOCKING asked to be administratix of the estate., aged 26 years, born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND son Thomas and Mary. 1879 December 11 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - On Saturday last Shellen son of Henry DANIELL, was in the stable of BAER & DYMACK , while the teamster was harnessing the horses. One of them kicked out behind and striking the boy on the thigh and broke his leg, three inches above the knee causing a compound fracture. MARRIED - On Thursday evening last, Mr Thomas SODDY and Miss Mary PHILLIPS. They will take up residence in the house formerly occupied by Mr JACKMAN. 1879 December 18 - PORTAGE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - In Hancock, 1879 December 10, Lillie, daughter of William and E. J. HARRY, aged 3 years, and 4 months. 1879 D ecember 25 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - In Houghtion, 1879 December 24 - of lung fever, Gottfried BURGO, aged 47 years and 6 months.
