These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. ____________________________________________________________________ 1879 January - June Issues - Some issues may be missing. ........denotes there was more to the article and the article with in is a shortened version. 1879 JANUARY 2 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Annie PHILLIPS ; a wayward young woman; Francis DEIDRICH and John GRAFF, convicted of keeping a house of ill fame and a man named LYNCH were taken below to jails in Lower Michigan and the asylum. NEWS ITEM- Capt P. HARRINGTON of Keweenaw County left for Colorado on Tuesday last, to locate there for the future. NEWS ITEM- Dr G. W. MARSTERS, for years one of the Calumet and Hecla mining company's physicians, located at Torch Lake, resigned his position, last summer and is now a resident of Gawker City, Kansas. MARRIED- 1878 December 25- Philip Wesley McLAUGHLIN and Miss Elizabeth Jane FRANCES, both of Hancock. DEATH- On New Years day, Edward TONKIN, employed at the Osceola mine, in attempting to draw water from a well, lost his balance and fell in the well and died of drowning. He leaves a large family very poor. NEWS ITEM- Early on New Years day , John HEYN, a German, while walking on the main street in Red Jacket, was stabbed with a knife by some unknown person. He is in critical condition. He believes the man was either Finnish or Norwegian. A Finn has been arrested and his friends said that he was with them. 1879 January 9 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM-Calumet Lodge I. O. O. F. has elected new officers- William Henry WILLIAMS; Robert CLARKE; William MELDON; T. F. POWERS; Richard BERRYMAN; Isaac BINGEN ; and William PHILLIPS. NEWS ITEM- The Italian Benovelent Society has elected new officers- Michael BORGO; Guiseppo TOVRIANO; Vital COPPO; Selias LISA . This Society is 3 years old and has paid away $2000.00 to its members. 1879 January 16 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED- 1870 January 10 on Friday - Isaac MATTERS, at his residernce in Houghton, age 48 years, 7 months 1879 January 30 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- Last Sunday Alfred TUPPER who was walking across the Franklin Farm, saw a wolf and he couldn’t decide afterwards who was the most scared he or the wolf. 1879 Febuary 6 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATES - Estate of John STAPLETON, deceased, his wife appointed executrix. Estate of John GIBSON, deceased, asking to appoint an administrator Estate of George WILSON, deceased, asking to appoint his mother, Mary Ann GORDON, administrator. NEWS ITEM- George CONWAL will deliver a temperance lecture , next Sunday evening at the Hancock Congregational church MARRIED -1879 January 27- At the Douglass House, Houghton-- Mr L. William ALEXANDER and Miss Sophia SAMUELSON, both of Michigammee, Michigan DIED - 1879 February 3 - At her residence in Houghton, Hannah F. RICHEY, wife of A. R. RICHEY, aged 32 years. NEWS ITEM- At the masked carnival at the Hecla skating rink, prizes were awarded for the best costumes- 1st Prize - Mr Paul GRIERSON, as an Army Officer; 2nd prize - Miss Esther FRY, as Queen of the Stars; 3rd Prize - Mr Lucius L. KILMAR, as an old lady NEWS ITEM- Peter BARRYMORE, who lives up the hill, claims to have the best hunting dog in the area. 1879 February 13 -PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM- John HALLE , who lives on the Portage River, expects to engage in making butter extensively next season, He is now making a limited amount. NEWS ITEM- Alfred REMFRY, the Houg hton Assistant postmaster, due to his wife’s ill health, has resigned his position and will leave here the first of April to go to Cawker City, Kansas and have his wife see Dr MARSTERS, formerly of Lake Linden, living there now. MARRIAGE - Miss Charlotte MILLER, who lately was one of the queens of society here, was married last month from her father’s home in Rockford, Illinois to a Mr SPAULDING. Friends from Calumet sent her presents. DIED - Charles JANE was killed in an accident at the Allouez mine, Keweenaw county, on Monday. Young JANE was caught by a crank of a machine and was drawn into the machine. He was helping his father at the time. 1879 February 27 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTERS - The estate of Adam HAAS, deceased , asking the court to appoint Joseph HAAS, administrator. The estate of Barney FERS, deceased, asking that his relict, Mary FERS be administratix. DIED- 1879 February 23 At the Phoenix mine, Keweenaw county, DELANO, infant son of M.A. and N.V. DELANO, aged 12 hours 1879 March 13 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NATURALIZATIONS - At the 1st session of the Houghton Circuit court, the following persons became citizens of the United States - Leon PIUYE; Henry HUETMANN; George BUSSIERE; John WEBB; Louis GELINA and John DOL. NEWS ITEM - Many of the residents of Red Jacket have the Leadsville, Colorado fever; have left their home for Colorado. Many others are talking of following. NEWS ITEM- Robert SLOAN, night watchman of the Hecla mine, has left and bought farm land in Kansas and will locate there. Many of his friends are going out there to take up land. DIED - John P. REED, aged 44 years, a timberman in the Calumet mine, died on Thursday last, at his Calumet home after a short illness. Mr REED two weeks ago attended the funeral of Mr LORANGER, where it is felt he caught a chill. The funeral was at the Calumet Methodist church on Sunday. He was buried in Calumet on Sunday last with Masonic honors. He leaves a widow, Sarah and 5 children, 3 of them grown up. PROBATE MATTERS -- In the estate of James GRANVILLE, deceased, the court was aked to appoint John GUNDRY, administrator of the estate. In the estate of James LORANGER, deceased , the court was requested to appoint Kate LORANGER, relict, as the administrator of the estate In the estate of Henry GENNENNION , deceased, Mary HANCOCK offered the will to the court and asked that John HOAR, SR be appointed administrator. In the estate of John HAAS, deceased, the court was asked to make Joseph HAAS, son of the deceased be made administrator. 1879 March 20 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 March 5 In Baraga, Baraga County - Mr Roderick D. CAMERON and Miss Sarah J. VINCENT, both of Baraga RUNAWAY WIFE - Minnie E. SMITH , my wife, has left my bed and board without any just cause. I will not be responsible for any debts caused by her, signed Walter E. SMITH 1879 March 6, Hancock 1879 April 10 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED- 1879 March 22 Mr James WIVELL of Hancock and Miss Bessie KNEEBONE of Houghton PROBATE MATTERS - In the estate of Patrick KENNY, deceased, Bridget KENNY, relict, has asked the court to appoint her executrix. In the estate of John F. BETALER, deceased, George X. BETALER asked that he be appointed administrator. 1879 April 17 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 April 14 - At Houghton, Mr George Samuel LAWRENCE and Nelly SULLIVAN DIED - 1879 April 16, Wednesday Dora, infant daughter of D. and M. M. KLOCKNER of the Quincy mine. Funeral today, Thursday. NEWS ITEM- John HARRS, born and living in CORNWALL, ENGLAND, is a poet and has written a poem on WESTON’s walk in England. He is the brother of Mine Captain S. B. HARRIS, superintendent of the Ridge Mine, Ontonagon County, Michigan. 1879 April 24 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN NEWS ITEM - Mr and Mrs John ROBERTS and family, intends to make his home on a farm in Salinas, Kansas as soon as ship begin sailing again after the winter. 1879 May l - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 April 29 at Hancock Methodist parsonage, Thomas DUNSTAN and Mary Jane CURTIS, both of Calumet. NEWS ITEM - The walking manika has broken out in Houghton as Peter RIENELEAN ; John CUDDIHY ; Willie RYAN and Adolph ISLER are into walking two miles a day. DIED - On Monday last , William VINCENT, the brakeman, was standing on the Allouez mine train’s third car, when he was thrown between the cars and the train rode over him to his death. He leaves a widow and 4 young children. His father was killed about 12 years ago in the National mine. 1879 May 8 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 May 3 Saturday at Houghton, Walter CHUBB and Mary Ann CARAH, both of Houghton. DIED - 1879 On Monday morning last, Captain Thomas HOSKINS died at the Allouez mine, Keweenaw County, and was buried Tuesday afternoon at the Houghton burying ground. Services were held at the Hancock Congregational church on Tuesday. DIED - The Masonic Mutual Life Insurance has settled the claim of Mrs Sarah REED on the death of her late husband by sending her a check as provided for in his policy. PROBATE MATTER - In the estate of Michael AURICH, deceased, the petition of Alfred JEFFERY that Jacob BAER be appointed administrator. In the estate of Maria M. AURICH, deceased, Alfred JEFFERY asked that Jacob BAER be appointed administrator. 1879 May 15 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN DIED - On Sunday afternoon last, John EATHORN E, one of the oldest residents of Torch lake died. He broke a blood vessel which caused his death. 1879 May 29 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 May 25 at the Catholic church at Houghton, on Sunday - Mr Frank DOMES of Calumet and Miss Mary Ann FLEISCHMANN of Houghton MARRIED - 1879 May 17 Saturday morning at the residence of the bride’s parents , at the Pewabic mine - William TREVORROW and Miss Hannah DUNSTONE. DIED - An accident occurred at the Quincy mine last Monday which resulted in the death of Patrick MURPHY. He accidentally entered a drift where an explosion went off killing him. He leaves a wife and seven children. DIED - Last Tuesday afternoon a lad named Richard TRANGOWE , aged 8 years, while playing on MARTIN’s deck, fell overboard and was drowned. NEWS ITEM - IN a special election in Hancock last Monday, Mr John FLYNN was elected village marshall, in place of John FLEMING, who resigned. DIED - Captain Michael CUDDIHY, , who left here in March last, with Capt RYAN and Capt. SULLIVAN and some others from this place to go to the Black Hills, South Dakota , lately met with an accident in which he died there. He was working in a mine shaft and the chain on the bucket broke, hitting him on the head causing his death. His remains are being brought here on Saturday evening for burial on Sunday at the Catholic burial ground. Services will held at the St Patrick Hall in Hancock. NEWS ITEM - Capt James HOATSON late of the Delaware Mine, Keweenaw County went to Colorado on a prospecting trip. 1879 June 5 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN FRANKLIN MINING COMPANY in Hancock - Johnson VIVIAN, mine superintendent; James LORANGER, clerk; Richard NETTLE, mine captain MARRIED - 1879 May 31, Saturday at Allouez, Keweenaw County; Mr Henry T. RICHARDS and Miss Elizabeth ROWE, both of Central mine, Keweenaw county. MARRIED - - 1879 May 31, Saturday at Houghton Methodist parsonage - Mr James ROBERTS and Miss Sarah DUMBLE, both of the Atlantic mine. 1879 June 12 - PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE, HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN MARRIED - 1879 June 5 at Cliff mine, Keweenaw County - Mr William R. HARRIS and Miss Emma BREE, both of Central mine, Keweenaw County. NEWS ITEM - Mr James WALLS of Allouez, Keweenaw County has been seriously sick and with medical care is convalescing. 1879 June 19 PORTAGE LAKE MINING GAZETTE , HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN PROBATE MATTER - - In the estate of William, Lewis and Henry BURGHARD, minors, Letitia FISHER, guardian of the minors asked the court to allow her to sell real estate as part of the estate.
