The Finnish of Houghton Co. and the U.P.

Some of the towns mentioned in the list actually are located on the now Swedish side of the boarder (e.g. Haaparanta/Haparanda) and some have one part on the Swedish side and one on the Finnish (e.g. Ylitornio / Övertorneå). The northern part of Sweden is traditionally Finnish-speaking which can be confusing for genealogists abroad. I have myself come across emigrating Finnish-speaking relatives who claim themselves to be "Finns" from "Finland" in the US even though they actually were born on the Swedish side. (thank you Hakan!)
